Whitcomb, Sr. and Mary Dorsey Whitcomb on 23, 1927 in Charleston, Missouri. She was the fifth of fourteen children, spending most of her formative years in Girard, Kansas where she completed High School. She attended Kansas State Teachers in Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) majoring in primary education. She was introduced to John W. Thomas, Jr. by her brother, who went to school with him in Pittsburg. She married John W. Thomas, Jr. on 9, 1949 in Girard, Kansas. There were 4 children born to this union; Johnny, Cecilia, Nonetta and Clarissa. Louise worked as a substitute teacher and nurses aide in her early adulthood. She became a Licensed Vocational Nurse while living in Amarillo, Texas. She later became one of the first African Americans to graduate from Midwestern State Universitys nursing program as a Registered Nurse.
