Obituary: Dorothy Kathleen Bishopp Thomas died in her sleep , May 26, 2015. She was a resident of Garden Estates of Temple where she had lived for five years. She was 102 years old and would have been 103 on 22. A memorial service will be held on afternoon, May 31, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the Rogers Park Boat Ramp on Lake Belton with the Rev. Donna Bowling officiating. Dorothy was born in Vermillion, Alberta Canada on 22, 1912. She was the second youngest of 9 children. Her family farmed a homestead near Vermillion but harsh winters forced them to sell their farm and immigrate to Lakeland, Florida when she was a teenager. Dorothy studied business in high school and graduated at age 16. She entered the Salvation Armys officer training school in Atlanta after telling them she was 18. Upon completion of her training she served the Salvation army for the next ten years as the leader of a number of small Salvation Army outposts in Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas. She eventually became the Armys financial auditor for all its activities in those states. While living in Oklahoma City in 1940 she married Horace Lincoln Thomas, a Salvation Army officer like herself. A year later she gave birth to her first son, David, in Seminole, Oklahoma, and four years later, she bore her second and last child, Horace Lincoln, in Dallas. In 1953 her husband became a Presbyterian minister and he and Dorothy served the Lord through his pastorates in Presbyterian churches in Charlotte, North Carolina, Shelbyville, Illinois, Ada, Oklahoma, Sturgis, Michigan, and Detroit, Michigan. retired to Lakeland, Florida in 1975. When Horace developed Alzheimers disease in 1998 they moved to Temple, TX to be with Horaces two older sisters, Delia White and Evangeline Fowler. Horace died in 2000 of complications caused by Alzheimers disease. Dorothy leaves behind her two sons, Horace Thomas of Belton and David Thomas of Montebello, California, four grand children: Shawn Thomas of Morgans Point, Tanna Braud of Round Rock, Marc Thomas of Los Angeles and Laura Cetilia of Providence, RI. She had two great grandchildren, Miles Thomas of Morgans Point and Mara Cetilia of Providence, RI. |

Obituary: In loving memory of Dorothy Nell Stuart Thomas. a lifetime of service, the Lord called her home at age 93. Affectionately known as Dot, she was the oldest daughter within seven siblings and she experienced many changes in this world throughout her years. From farm life, to being a military officers wife, to being a member of a garden club, to selling insurance, Dorothy was always busy and willing to teach others what she had learned. She always offered a place to sleep to out-of-town visitors, as well as a good home-cooked meal. Her family will always recall the smell of chalupas on the stove, the taste of her garden-fresh tomatoes, her homemade mashed potatoes, the chocolate pie recipe adopted from her husbands family and even her own banana pudding - all usually served up with a helping of common sense and maternal love. It could be said she nourished both the body and soul. She is survived by her youngest sister, Charlene Stuart McGuire; her children, Patsy Thomas Smith and James Ray Thomas; her three grandchildren, Dawn Smith, Janell Smith Stinson, and Michael Thomas; and her four great-grandchildren, Chelsea Belmont, London Thomas, Austin Starr, and Ian Smith. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who are still trying to master Aunt Dorothys potato salad! The memorial service will be held at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. , 31st, 2015. The church address is 4114 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas, 78227.
