Obituary: ROY WALTER TROUDT was born in Portland, Oregon on May 21, 1925; the youngest of six children born to Nicholas and Katerine Troudt (German descent, came to America in 1919 from Russia). joining the US Navy and serving in the Asian Pacific arena from 1943 through May 1946, Roy lived his entire life in Portland, Oregon. Marrying Phyllis Jeanne Smith (Yakima, Washington) in 1948, saw the start of their family; with the birth of their son Barry (deceased), followed by daughters, Cynthia (married to Bob Schaper), Donna (married to Don Hartley)and son Richard (married to Teresa). Roy supported his family by building an independant garbage collection company, "Roys Sanitary Service," serving SW Portland. Roy not only supported his wife and children, but also became an employer and mentor to several young men. During his off hours, Roy enjoyed fishing along the coast and the Columbia and Willamette Rivers of Oregon. For several years, Roy was a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks, Beaverton, Oregon lodge. Whether it was fishing, working in his wood shop, playing twice monthly poker games with friends, or spending time around his home, Roy had a fulfilling life. Roy will remain part of the lives of his wife, children, six grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Services will be held at Willamette National on , 16 at 1:30 pm. Obituary: PHYLLIS JEANNE TROUDT (Smith) was born in Yakima, Washington on 28, 1927 the eldest of two children, (Gary L. Smith - Palm Desert, California; Brother) to Chet and Peggy Smith (Lamb). When Phyllis was four years of age, and upon the death of her mother, her father married Flora Nelson. Over time, Phyllis became the eldest sister to two half-siblings; Rodney Smith, (Yakima, Washington) and Stephanie Sharp (Smith; Halfway, Missouri). During her later years at Yakima High School, (Yakima, Washington) Phyllis would spend the summer months during World War II living with an aunt in Portland, Oregon and working at a local shipyard. graduating from Yakima High in 1945, and obtaining a position with Pacific NW Bell, she transferred to the Pacific NW Bell office in Portland, Oregon. It was during these years that she met and married (1948) Roy Walter Troudt of Portland, Oregon and began their family of four children; son Barry, (deceased) daughters Cynthia (Schaper), Donna (Hartley) and son Richard. Along with being a “ maker,” she was an active partner with her husband Roy in the family business; Roy’s Sanitary Service, which served the residents of southwest Portland. When the family moved into a new home in southwest Portland, Phyllis spent the first months visualizing, planning, and transporting the numerous flowers, bushes and trees for the landscaping of their new home, which won the admiration of not only her neighbors, but also a City of Portland Parks Bureau manager. Many of trips were made by Phyllis to a local yard and garden nursery where she would pick up another new bush or tree, carry it home in the trunk of the family car and place it in a specific spot in the yard. In addition to her enjoying the family yard throughout the four seasons of the year, Phyllis also let her creative talent flow through numerous years of attending ceramic classes. Phyllis also volunteered over the years at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, (OMSI) working in the museum science store. The greatest joy, however, for Phyllis was having her immediate or extended family around. Whether it was canning home-made applesauce, dill pickles, and strawberry freezer jam, or planning and cooking for her family on a daily basis, Phyllis enjoyed providing a warm and welcoming home. A home where over the years, sounds of children playing and the welcoming sound of the family pets. Phyllis so loved dogs that for many years’ extended family and friends would be met by four wagging tails at the door. Phyllis enjoyed reading cookbooks and experimenting in the kitchen to the delight of family and friends who would be sitting around the family dining table. Many of holiday treats and full-course dinners were made by Phyllis. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Roy, parents and son, Barry. Phyllis will always remain a very important part of the lives of her three children, their spouses, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The Ship – by Bishop Brent What is dying? The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "She is gone" there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up a glad shout: "There she comes!", and that is dying. |
