Obituary: THORNTON, Wanda Eleanore, died peacefully at age 95 on 30, 2014 at Englewood Manor, Englewood, Ohio. Wanda was born on 13, 1919 in Dayton Ohio, the youngest of eight children to John Addison Armstrong and Caroline Catherine (Mortz) Armstrong. She is predeceased by her brothers Mark, Frank, Lesley, and Joe, and sisters Viola, Ada (died in infancy), and Florence and her daughter, Darlene Sue Sizemore. Wanda is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George Charles III and Louise Thornton, of Fort Collins, Colorado and her son-in-law Robert Sizemore of Dayton, OH. Wanda is survived by 5 grandchildren and their spouses: Charles Louis Thornton, Julia (James) Thornton Cherry, Lara (Toby) Thornton Tabola, Scott A. (Erika) Sizemore, and Wendy (Jeremy) L. Heisey; 16 great grandchildren: Tyler and Cheyenne Thornton; Jerett, Jacob, Jillian, and Jace Cherry; Caley Tabola Mitchell, Haydn, Payson, and Bowen Tabola; Haley and Nolan Sizemore; Bradley and Courtney Swain, Cassandra and Nick Wheeler; great-great granddaughter, Audrey Swain. Wanda grew up on Smith Street in south Dayton, and then lived on Springbrook Blvd. in north Dayton while her kids were growing up. She moved to Union in 1975 where she lived until moving to Englewood Manor in 2011. She was employed nearly throughout her entire life. In the 1950s she owned and operated Wee Tots Kindergarten in her basement. Over the years she was a bookkeeper and office manager for numerous restaurants and small businesses. She and her daughter prepared income tax returns for many individuals and small businesses, continuing this work into her 80s. Wanda loved to entertain family and friends. In the 1950s she regularly prepared treats for neighborhood children who came to play on the large swing set in the family corner lot on Springbrook. Throughout the years she hosted Thornton family gathering at Christmas and in the summer. Later in life she was instrumental in re-uniting portions of the Armstrong side of the family. Known as Gram, she maintained interest in the life of family and friends, attending ball games, sending greeting cards, inquiring about school and life events. Scores of people attended her 80th and 90th birthday parties, including family, friends, friends of her children and grandchildren, neighbors and city officials of Englewood and Union. Everyone wanted to greet and check up on Gram. Wanda loved her dogs. As a child she had Duchess and Sam. As her children grew up, she had Toby, Dickens, Peaches, Rags, Binky, and Angel. Later in life she had Punkin, Kong¸ Chips, Little Bit, Lady Bug, and Buddy. She loved to tell stories, joyful and sad, about each one. Highly spirited and vocal, she believed in the motto: Everyone is entitled to my opinion. She was a regular thorn in the side of local officials in Union where she resided for many of her older years¸ complaining and giving advice about community services, or lack thereof. There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends on , 20, 2014 starting at 11:00 am at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME ENGLEWOOD CHAPEL, 675 West Wenger Road, followed by a Celebration of Wandas life at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Hospice Organization of the donors choice. |
