Obituary: Southern Pines NC Vaud A Travis Jr. Ed.D. left his earthly body in the early morning hours of 12, 2016. Dr. Travis was born 25, 1924 on the Osage Indian Reservation, Osage , Oklahoma, a mere 17 years after Oklahoma became a state. His father, Vaud A Travis Sr. was employed as Superintendent of Schools of the town of Osage. The family moved in 1927 to Tahlequah, Oklahoma in 1927, when Vaud Sr. became the Director of the Bagley Teacher Training School at Northeastern State Teachers (now Northeastern Oklahoma State University). The campus and training school was Vaud Jr.’s second home. He became on Eagle Scout in 1938 and graduated from Bagley High School in 1941. He graduated on night and on morning of the following week walked across campus to enroll as a college freshman with a major in chemistry. In 1942, he enlisted in the army reserves and was called to active duty in 1943. He was sent to England in 1944 as a replacement combat engineer for the 29th Division. a depot cook mistook melted lye soap in a field cooking pan for gravy, he was sent to a field hospital in lieu of the 29th’s D-Day invasion of Omaha Beach. discovering his chemistry background, he was then assigned to the 660th Topographic Engineer Battalion which was the only unit in the European Theater of Operation equipped to print four-color maps. Following discharge in 1946, Dr. Travis completed his BS degree at Northeastern, his MS in business at Oklahoma State University and married Vivian Irene Kelly on the last day of 1947. He later earned a doctorate in Administration of Higher Education at Oklahoma State while his wife, Vivian, earned a Ph.D. in Psychology, while raising 4 young children. He then committed his professional life to two-year institutions of higher education. Dr. Travis felt that two-year institutions filled a higher education gap by offering college transfer curriculum, as well as remedial, vocational and technical training. In the 1960’s, North Carolina had adopted a new two-year community college system. In 1966, Dr. Travis went to Charlotte to interview and was employed as a Dean ( later Vice President), to build a college transfer and other technical programs for the emerging Central Piedmont Community (CPCC). The school had been designated a community college only 18 months earlier and already had an enrollment of 4000. Programs that he developed were as diverse as standard two-year college courses, the CPCC theater, music labs, real estate, hotel-motel and food service management. By 1978, the CPCC enrollment was in excess of 28,000 students with his area employing 400 instructors. Patrick and Mary (his youngest) attended the first production of what is now known as the CPCC Summer theater with our parents. There was a small stage in what was then the “canteen” on campus. Our father had hired Tom Vance as an English teacher, but during the interview inquired as to whether or not he had a background or interest in drama. Tom’s first production was “110 Degrees in the Shade”. Being 12 and 11 at the time, we thought it was the most wonderful thing we had ever seen. Our father equated success as the work itself, not the receiving of credit for it. If another book about CPCC is ever written, we hope the research will yield more truth than gloss. (Patrick and Mary’s words, not his.) In 1978, he moved to Moore to serve as Dean of Instruction at Sandhills Community and purchased a house for future retirement. Dr. Travis retired in 1987. He and Vivian traveled to many countries, their favorite being China. Our father became a travel and nature photographer and later had exhibitions of his Chinese photographs in Winston Salem, Charlotte and with the Moore Arts Council at Campbell House. When health problems ended their travels, the couple turned to family history and genealogy. Dr Travis published six books of the family history and genealogy which have been placed in regional and national libraries. In Charlotte, Travis was a Rotarian. In Moore , he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills for over 25 years. He also served two years as the Boy Scouts District Chairman. Dr. Travis was proceeded in death by his parents, Vaud A Travis Sr. and Lorena Lewis Travis. He was also proceeded in death by his sister, Lorena Louise Travis and two sons, Vaud A Travis III and James Lewis Travis. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Vivian Kelly Travis of Southern Pines, NC, his children, Daniel Stuart Travis who presently lives somewhere in South Korea, Patrick Kelly Travis (Lisa) of Granite Falls, NC and Mary Travis Baumgardner (Perry) of Dallas, NC, six grandchildren, Ferrin Lhea Travis, Miranda Kristin Travis, Daniel Stuart Travis, Jr. (Camile-Ricca), Lauren Elizabeth Travis, Benjamin Patrick Travis (Katherine) and Andrew Harrison Travis (Lenni), as well as one great grandson, Gage Travis. There will be no service but a celebration of life to be announced at a later date. Powell and Crematory of Southern Pines is assisting the family. |

Obituary: TERRY WAYNE TRAVIS Terry Wayne Travis, 59, passed away on , 19,2015 at CMC Main surrounded by loved ones. Born on 3, 1956, in Catawba . He was the son of Garnie Baker Travis and the late Charles Franklin Travis. In addition to his father he is preceded in death by one great niece Sera White. Terry left behind a son Charles Wayne Travis; Wayne’s mother, Sandra Davis Travis; Wayne’s significant other, Lizi Wilfong; stepson, Nathan Kiser; stepdaughter, Kristy Kiser; grandson’s, Daniel and Caleb Travis; five granddaughters; brother, Danny Travis; sister, Debra Hollar and husband James; five nieces; and two great niece. Terry was a member of Tri-City Baptist Church and worked at GKN in Maiden. He was a loving son, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Terry was also a huge Carolina Tarheel fan. A celebration of life service will be held on , 24, 2015 at 2 pm at Tri-City with Reverend Byron Repass officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
