Obituary: Mr. Robert "Bobby" Thomas, 73, passed peacefully into Heaven on evening, May 11, 2017 at Novant Presbyterian Medical in Charlotte, NC. He was the son of the late Harold L. and Carolyn Pierce Thomas. His father was a graduate of Belmont Abbey and his mother, a graduate of Queens in Charlotte, was a teacher in the public schools of North Carolina. Bob was a graduate of J.H. Rose High School in Greenville, NC and PGA Business School, Park, Maryland. He was a life member of the PGA of America, inducted into membership in May 1969; a 48-year tenure. Bob began his golf career as an assistant professional under his father at Greenville Golf & Country Club, Greenville, NC before becoming head professional at Robersonville Country Club in Martin . Later, he joined the staff at Chicora Country Club in Dunn, NC as head golf professional and greens superintendent. While at Chicora, his father purchased Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, where Bob served as head professional and golf course superintendent. Later, he moved to Charlotte and was teaching professional at Crown Golf in Pineville. Bob served as golf coach for the J.H. Rose High School golf team and assisted with the East Carolina University golf team as well. Bob was an outstanding junior golfer, advancing to the semi-finals of the National Junior Competition in his earlier years. He played in many PGA tournaments throughout his career, including men's and ladies Pro-Am events. He and his step-mother, the former Jeanette Hackney of Washington, NC, often formed a winning team throughout the Carolinas section. Bob was best known for his outstanding teaching ability and expertise as a greens superintendent. Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Anna Overton of Greenville, NC; a son, Rob Thomas and wife, Chelsi, of Cherryville; two sisters, Ellen Thomas Avery and husband, Wayne, of Winterville and Carol Thomas Powers and husband, Dr. David Powers, of Indian Beach. And of course, his beloved canine companion, Rocky, who faithfully guarded him during his illness. Services for Bob will be held at 2:00 p.m. on , May 20th in the chapel of St. James United Methodist Church in Greenville, NC, where Bob and Anna were united in marriage 50 years ago on 12, 1967. On this day, Bob's brother-in-law, William Vance Overton, gave his sister Anna to him in marriage. Honoring their marriage vows, "'til death do us part", Anna now releases Bob into the hands of their Almighty Father, where they will one day be reunited. The Thomas family would like to especially thank Dr. Jimmie Adcock of First Charlotte Physicians for his untiring efforts in caring for Bob for so many years; the entire medical staff at Novant Presbyterian Medical in Charlotte, especially the ICU team; Dr. Maier and Dr. McWilliams; the outstanding Ballantyne Fire Dept. #32, who continually assisted Bob during his illness; and the relentless EMS (Medic) team of Mecklenburg . Obituary: Robert C. Thomas, 84, died peacefully 23rd at his home of 26 years in Brevard, North Carolina. Bob was a committed Christian who was guided by his faith to be a follower of Christ and an evangelist in his every day life. He was a devoted friend of Bill W. and took seriously his role as mentor and sponsor. Born in Flushing N.Y. in 1929, Bob grew up in Little Neck N.Y., and graduated from Bayside High School. He attended Duke University where he was conferred memberships in Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa and selected as a Rhodes Scholar. He then joined the Marines and served as a captain in the Korean War. Being a Marine was a source of great pride throughout his life. In 1953, Bob joined the business world in New York City with PriceWaterhouseCoopers as a Certified Public Accountant and concurrently completed a Masters of Business Administration from New York University. He was promoted to Tax Partner at PwC in 1965 and retired in 1984. In the tax department, his specialty required him to relocate to many PwC offices around the country and Puerto Rico. Bob married his high school sweetheart, Norma Louise Kunle, who he met in elementary school. celebrated 61 years of marriage in 2013. Together they enjoyed a love of music, swing dancing and church activities. Bob played trumpet in several swing bands in the 1940s and continued his love of jazz, swing and traditional Christian hymns. He took great pride in his appearance and dressed impeccably and with style. An accomplished quarterback in high school, he was also a life-long fan of Yankee Baseball and Duke Basketball. Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brevard. Bob is survived by his wife Norma L. Thomas, and by their three children Barbara L. Thomas, (Charlotte N.C.), David P. Thomas and wife Marianne Egri ( New York, N.Y.) and Peter J. Thomas and wife Jodi Thomas (Rapid City, S.D.), and by Lizette Witt, her husband Scott and their three children Michelle, Nicole and Christian. Bob has 5 grandchildren, of whom he was very proud, including, Aaron Thomas-Bolduc, Taylor Egri-Thomas, Elana Egri-Thomas, Tina Thomas and Richard Thomas, and recently, a great grandchild Isabella Marie Trujillo-Thomas. A Service in celebration of the resurrection will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Brevard, at 4 Pm, 27th. Rev. Mike Holder and Rev. Lauren Sims-Salata officiating. He graduated from Trident Technical and retired from Cherry Point Marine Air Station in 2011. He was a member of James Island Masonic Lodge No. 396 AMF. He is survived by his wife A. Obituary: Mrs. Rita Delores Johnson Thomas, 73, went home to be with the Lord on , 6, 2015 at Thomasville Medical . Mrs. Thomas was born on 17, 1941 in Plymouth, NC to the late Levi and Queenie Cooper Johnson. She attended NC Central University and later moved to New York, where she worked for the NYPD for many years as a police administrative aid. Mrs. Thomas will be remembered for her kind sense of humor and as a loving mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bright Thomas. Surviving are her children, Bryant Thomas and his wife Nancy of Thomasville, Paul Smith of New York, and Audris Hamilton of Tucker, GA; grandchildren, Randy McKenzie, Kauron Thomas, Shaquanna Thomas, Bryant Thomas III, and Serina Smith; and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Emma Johnson, Dr. Brent Johnson, and Rev. Obituary: Richard Edmund Thomas Richard, 83, of Charlotte, NC passed away on , 5, 2010 at home in his garden. He served in the US Navy during WWII and was a member of American Legion Post 345. Richard was a plumber and a master of his trade. If you knew Richard you knew he was a family man. His family meant everything to him. He had the best sense of humor around and was the most caring and giving man. He will be missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his wife Patsy; his children Richard, Jr. and wife Janet; Jamie Thomas, Becky Rowland and her husband Powers; Cindy Morgan and her husband Steve; Kellie Petty and her husband Creg; and his brother Jim Thomas. Also surviving 3 grandchildren Kelsi and Sam Rowland and Carter Morgan. He was preceded in death by his brothers Joe and Bill Thomas. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 pm on , 9, 2010 at Harry and Bryant. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association or the Humane Society of Charlotte in honor of his best friend and dog Samantha. |
