Obituary: Ava- Margaret L. Traxel, 94, widow of Gordon, a longtime resident of the Town of Ava, passed away on , 4, 2015 at the Sunset and Rehabilitation , Boonville. She was born in Ava on 6, 1921, a daughter of Carl H. and Lillian Roser Kappler. In 1938, she moved with her family to West Leyden, where she completed her education graduating from West Leyden Central School with the Class of 1940. She was employed at Nelsons Department Store in Rome. During WWII, Margaret was employed by Rome Cable Co., where she inspected air craft cables. On 12, 1946 Margaret was united in marriage with Gordon Traxel at the Clinton United Methodist Church. This was a blessed union of over 68 years. Following their marriage the couple settled in Ava on the Traxel homestead farm which they continued to operate for many years. Mr. Traxel a retired custodian and bus driver for the Adirondack Elementary School, West Leyden, passed away on 18, 2015. Margaret was a member of the Ava Hilltop United Methodist Church, where she also belonged to the Ladies Aid Society. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, dancing, listening to Big Band era music, and raising many different kinds of flowers. Mrs. Traxel is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law: Gary, Lynn (Sheila), all of Ava, and Bruce (Gayle), Prospect. One daughter and son-in-law: Donna (David) Byrne, Town of Lee; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Besides her husband Gordon, Margaret was predeceased by her brother Carl H. Kappler, Jr. A special thank you goes to the staff at Sunset & Rehabilitation , Boonville, for the excellent care given to Margaret, and also to the Boonville Ambulance personnel. In keeping with her wishes, funeral services will be held privately at the Trainor , Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, there will be no calling hours. Interment will be in Ava . Obituary: Ava- Gordon Traxel, 96, of Traxel Road, a native and life resident of the Town of Ava, passed away on , 18, 2015, at Sunset & Rehabilitation , Boonville. He was born on 18, 1918, on the Traxel Farm, a son of Daniel and Lucy Wood Traxel. He graduated from West Leyden High School with the Class of 1936. For many years he operated the Traxel Family Farm until he retired from farming in 1969. that he was employed as a custodian and bus driver at the Adirondack Elementary School in West Leyden, and as a truck driver at Baileys Feed Mill, of Boonville, retiring in 1984. On 12, 1946, Gordon was united in marriage with Margaret Kappler at the Clinton United Methodist Church; this was a blessed union that lasted for over sixty eight years. Gordon served on several local town and school positions, including the Ava Town Board, Ava Town Tax Collector, the West Leyden Central School Board of Education, and the planning board for the new location and construction of the Adirondack Central High School, in Boonville, in the late 1960s. For many years Mr. Traxel also served as superintendent of the Ava . During the late 1930s and early 1940s Gordon enjoyed playing drums in a local band; and after getting his private pilots license, he greatly enjoyed flying airplanes with his flying buddies. Later in life, he enjoyed operating his 16 foot boat on several area lakes and on the Barge Canal. In addition to his wife, Margaret, Gordon is survived by three sons and two daughters in law: Gary Traxel, Lynn and Sheila Traxel, all of Ava, and Bruce and Gayle Traxel, of Prospect; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and David Byrne, of Lee. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and many many great grandchildren. Gordons family would like to thank the staff at Sunset and Rehabilitation , Boonville, for their excellent care they gave to Gordon and to the ambulance personnel of the West Leyden Fire Department. In keeping with this wishes his Services will be private at the Trainor , Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville and there will be no calling hours. Interment will be in the spring at Ava . Obituary: Boonville- Charles F. Traxel, 93, Ford St., a native and life resident of Boonville, and husband of Barbara, passed away while under the loving care of his wife Barbara, on , 6, 2015 at his residence. He was born on 28, 1922, a son of Henry and Sadye Freeman Traxel. Charlie graduated from Boonville High School with the Class of 1940. Mr. Traxel served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Air Cadets serving stateside from 1943-1945, during WWII. his honorable discharge, he returned to Boonville and was employed by John Shepard at the Grand Union Store. Mr. Traxel was a well-known and highly successful auto mechanic. He began his long career in auto mechanics as manager for the Texaco Gas Station on Post St. before his employment from 1947-the early 1960s, as an auto mechanic and parts manager for Harold Schaeffer at the DeSoto & Plymouth Automobile Dealership on Rt. 12. that, Charlie, his brother Glenn, and Bruce Pfendler formed a three-way partnership in operation of the Boulevard Garage, until 1977, when Mr. Traxel opened his own auto repair business at his residence on Ford St, which he operated until he was well past the age of 80. On 9, 1960, Charlie was united in marriage with Barbara Ellers, at Trinity Reformed Church, Schenectady, after that the couple moved to their present home. Mr. Traxel was a life member of Boonville United Methodist Church, where he served as a church Trustee and was a member of the choir. He was also a long time member of Boonville-Uriel Masonic Lodge # 165, serving as Lodge Master in 1960. Charlie was a well-known and very talented North Country musician and trumpet player, a career that he began at the age of 12, playing in the Boonville High School Band. Later he played trumpet in Boonville Fire Co. Drum & Bugle Corps and for several years, Charlie, Hal Mahaffy and Bern Sawyer, formed a trumpet, piano and drums trio, providing entertainment for many summers in Adirondack Mountain area hotels. One of his favorite musical memories was playing in a band for Utica American Legion Post # 229, in a parade which took place on 5th Ave. in New York City. He will be fondly remembered for participating in the Summer Boonville Band Concerts in the park, the Clark Mills Band, Lowville Band, and Pat Browns Big Band Jazz Band, Friends of the Ziyara Shrine Band, the Lowville Garage Band, and Charlie took part in the pit band for many area high school Broadway musical productions and for many years he was a member of the Adirondack Community Chorus. He last played his trumpet in , 2014, for the Lowville Baptist Church. In addition to his wife of 55 years, Barbara, Charlie is survived by one daughter, Judith (Jeffrey) Slye, Marilla, NY; one son, William (Karla) Traxel, Boonville; five grandchildren, Abigail McLean, Colin McLean, Kaitlyn, Rhiannon and Glenn Traxel; a nephew, Ronald (Faith) Traxel, Boonville, and their family, Beth (Bradley) Evans, Deborah (John) Smith; a niece, Carol (Walter) Marks, LaCento, FL, and their daughter, Carrie (Scott) Sommers; and son, Wyatt (Julie) Marks and a brother in law, William Ellers, Addison, IL. He was predeceased by a brother and sister in law, Glenn and Muriel Traxel, a sister, Ruth Traxel and by a sister in law, Carol Ellers. His will be at 11:00 A.M. at Trainor , Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with interment in Boonville , with Military Rites provided by Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Harland J. Travis of Kerrville, Texas. Mr. Travis was a writer, philosopher & poet. He loved to travel and followed his heart wherever that would take him.
