Obituary: Jack Earl Tharp, 80, passed from this earth on 27, 2017. His final moments were peaceful, surrounded by his loving family as he transitioned to at last be reunited with his forever love, Gladys Nell Tharp. He is preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Rutland Tharp and his brother Don Tharp. He is survived by his son, Dr. Greg Tharp, wife Karen, his daughter, Penni Tharp Davis, husband Chris and four beloved grandchildren Tara Tharp, Jack G. Tharp, Peyton Davis, and Jake Davis. He also survived by his sister Jerry Spangler and her husband Tom, of Dover, DE. Jack was born in Mount Olive, MS on 31, 1936. Of bright mind, young Jack learned to be self sufficient, quick witted, keen, no stranger to the hard demands of farm life and desirous to expand his horizons. As a young teen, he got his chance when he moved to Gulfport MS to join his sister, his mother, and her husband Leroy Tharp. He fell in love with life on the MS Gulf Coast and excelled in mathematics and science at Gulfport High school. Some time later, he also fell in love with a tall, slender beauty named Gladys Nell Davis. He often said "We found each other and needed each other", and so, it was to be. His academic prowess led to a West Point Academy appointment. He later travelled to Houston TX and also Atlanta GA pursuing career opportunities, but decided to move back to MS to make that slender beauty his own. married at First Baptist Church of Lyman on 25, 1959. She gave herself away at the wedding. It was always just the two of them and the strong bond of getting support exclusively from each other was formed. Jack and Nell moved to Jackson, MS, where he worked in management at Presto Manufacturing and she took a position at Traveller's Insurance and they began their life and family together. Growing up lacking a father's love, our father proved to be a natural at it. He loved and was committed to our mother and to his family. He was a provider, a strong leader, and was always generous with his time for his kids, and later grandkids. He and Mom provided a very loving, stable home. He made sure his kids knew their place and their potential. Their home was the one where all the friends would meet. Love and warmth permeated around them. People were instinctively drawn to their loving home. were married 55 years until she died of cancer. He instilled in us a core value system that defined who he was. And that was a man who kept his promises and honored commitment. He was a man of integrity. Whenever we stumbled, he didn't accept excuses or complaining. He never advised us to take the easy way out or quit. He'd have none of that. He fully expected us to see things through, all the way, to the end and without drama. "Do it. It just needs to be done", echoes in our ears yet today. He had our backs, and we knew it. He never missed a moment with his two kids. He relished our successes and was a backbone to lean on in troubled times. His gift was listening, understanding, and offering clear, logical, sage wisdom and advice. Having not experienced a father's love growing up, he made sure his kids and grandkids (and innumerable friends) experienced it fully. Even as our hearts beat their way across this temporal expanse, we are given glimpses of an innate spark of divinity. We create, we hope, we seek, we understand, we strive, we love, and if we're fortunate,.we comprehend. Family means everything. Our parents met while under the care of our Heavenly Father. belong to one another and to Him. are now, and forever will be, in our hearts. are bound forever, as it should be. are the lights in our eyes, "gleaming, fierce,..unbreakable." What is a father's love? We knew. There is a place, absent from distraction and dismay. A place clearly seen. A place where we will find the ongoing love of a Daddy . A Daddy whose body may be taken, but whose heart is near. Reunited with his forever love. Reunited with our Heavenly Father quoting our Daddy saying "Don't worry. I am right here. You can do this." The torch is passed. To everyone that knew them, carry it proudly and with gratitude. Deuteronomy 1:31. "There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place." Visitation will be held on , 1, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8 pm and , 2, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Lakewood . services will be held on , 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm with burial to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park. |

Obituary: Gladys Nell Davis Tharp went to be with the Lord early morning on May 23rd, 2015, after battling lung cancer. Her last days were spent surrounded by loving family and friends. Tharp, Jack G. Tharp, Peyton F. Davis and Jake C. Davis. Nell was born on 22nd, 1941 to Harry L. Davis and Alleyne Lanier Davis. She was raised in the Gum Pond Community outside of Poplarville, MS. She was the youngest of three children. Her two siblings were Harold L. Davis, Jr., and Zada Louise Dearman who precede her in death. Her father moved the family to Vicksburg for a while where he worked for the Laterno Corporation managing their poultry operations. then moved back to the Gum Pond Community where her father supported the family by farming and animal husbandry. At the age of ten, Nell lost her mother Alleyne due to illness. Nell completed her education while living with various aunts and on campus of Pearl River High School and Community . She graduated in 1959. graduation, she moved to Gulfport, MS to live with aunts and find work. While there, she also found Jack Tharp who was working at the Mississippi Power at the time. His co-worker suggested he meet this pretty girl who had moved into the house behind hers. Jack moved to Houston, then Atlanta to work, but soon came back to Jackson, MS where he was employed by the Presto Manufacturing . He went back to Gulfport to get his girl, because, as he put it " needed each other." needed each other for the next 55 1/2 years. were married at the First Baptist Church in Lyman, MS on 25th, 1959 and moved to West Jackson. Nell worked as a secretary for the Traveller's Insurance , W. S. Construction , the Pooley , and for several years the Jackson Public School System. She served as a secretary at Lake Elementary School, Key Elementary School, Davis Elementary School and for many years at the downtown central office where she retired. Over the years, many children have benefitted from her compassion as they visited the Principal's office or were waiting to see the school nurse. She supplemented income during this time by working part time as a photograph retoucher. For the last 26 years, Nell lived in Madison, MS where she helped raise her four grandchildren. She was active as an officer in the DAR and was a member of the Colonial Dames. She served on the Madison Library Commission, the Madison Planning and Zoning Board, the Welcome Neighbors Board and was president for many years of the Stonegate owner's Association. Over the years, Nell worshipped at Highland Baptist Church, Parkway Baptist Church, Van Winkle Baptist Church, Ridgecrest Baptist Church and lately Broadmoor Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and passed this love onto her family. She knew this world was but for a little while. She was an avid genealogist who took great pride and pleasure in tracing her lineage and leaves invaluable materials for her family to cherish. Nell was a skilled gardener and landscaper. She turned everywhere she lived into a lush, beautiful, serene setting. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren and raised solid, productive citizens. A self taught cook, she produced many fine meals for her family. If there was a more compassionate, giving, loving soul, we haven't met them. She will be missed greatly. She leaves a legacy of love and we look forward to the day when we will be reunited. Lastly, this from Henry Scott Holland, written in the late 1800's,.. "Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the same little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I'm out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval. Somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well." All is well. See you soon Mom. |
