Obituary: John S. Testaverde One of Gloucesters finest and fishermens wharf icons passed away , 2nd in the evening. John S. Testaverde was 73. Born on 13, 1940 to Rosario Salve and Lena Nina (Randazza) Testaverde, John was the first of five boys. Following in the legacy of his father and grandfather, John started working with his Dad on the Johnny Babe when he was 7 years old. The memories of those early days were captured in his fathers book, Memoirs of a Gloucester Fisherman. Later he fished with his uncles outside of New York on the Sandra Jean, and went purse seining on the Agatha & Patricia. Then he fished for years alongside his father and brothers on the Linda B. Upon his dads retirement, he took over and captained the Linda B, creating his own legacy. John met Jean Codinha when he was 18, and she 17 and he immediately knew she was the one. For him, she was his thrill that he found on Portagee Hill, and he wanted to marry her right away-and thats just what he did. Soon, they had a home of their own and four children; Theresa, John, Nina and Mary. John and Jean took that young love and grew it into a 53 year marriage that we could all learn from, Jean never left his side, caring for him until the very end. John was a passionate man, who lived for his family. If he wasn fishing or prepping the boat for another trip, he was home, cooking, gardening and sharing tales. He loved telling the stories of his youth, reminiscing about his adventures with his West End friends, Cosmo, Joe, Antoine and Arizona. As he grew older and stepped away from fishing, he focused his time on his grandchildren. He went to all their games and events even if he never could get over rooting for Rockport as a team. He was so proud of all of his grandchildren. With John, you always knew that you were loved. John was the patriarch of the family. He was the provider and protector. He commanded the dinner table like it was his boat. Even as his strength failed, when the family that he had always provided for and supported was forced to switch roles and start helping him, his spirit never dimmed. John was a proud and strong man who trusted his family and God to lead him. He had love, laughter, and joy, even in his final moments. John leaves behind a legacy of love. We were lucky to have had him in our lives. John was a loyal son, husband, a father, a brother, a grandfather, great-grandfather, a friend, a fisherman, a cook, and a storyteller, and he was damn good at each one. If you miss him, just know that you can always find Johnny in the mural on the side of Palazolas Sporting Goods store. Hes sitting there, in the midst of a perfect Fiesta night, scally cap tilted to the side, surrounded by good friends in the city he never stopped loving. Maybe hes thinking about one of his seine boat races at the fiesta, or a fishing trip he took with his father and brothers. If I had to bet though, Id say hes thinking about getting back home to Jean and the family he placed above everything. John is survived by his wife, Jean; his children, Theresa M. Testaverde, John R. Testaverde and his wife Marie, Nina and her husband Stephen Goodick, Mary Vitiello and her fiancé Joe Marcantonio, and son-in-law, Bruce Emerson; his grandchildren, Kayla Testaverde and her boyfriend J.D. Neal, Cory Emerson and his girlfriend Alannah Grooms, John Testaverde, Jr., Michael Emerson, Stephanie Hyde and her husband Barrett, Rebecca Goodick and her finance Cory Johnston, John Vitiello and Kathryn Vitiello; great-grandchildren, Kiley and Rachel; his brothers, Salvatore Testaverde and his wife Jo-Ann, Joseph Testaverde and Thomas Testaverde and his wife Roseanne; brother-in-law, Paul Codinha; special family, Sally Nicastro, Mary C. Frontiero, Josie Ciaramitaro, many nieces, nephews, cousins and our love to Daddys caretakers, Joan, Lois, Jim, Holly, Carol and the Beauport Ambulance drivers. He was predeceased by his parents, Rosario Salve and Lena Nina (Randazza) Testaverde; his infant brother; his sister-in-law, Joanne (Puccio) Testaverde, and his in-laws, Esther M. Smith and Joaquin Codinha. His Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Gloucester on , 5, at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. A visitation will be held prior to the Mass on morning in the Greely , 212 Washington Street, Gloucester from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. The burial will be held in Calvary , Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Holy Family Parish Medical Mission of Cevicos, c/o Nina J. Goodick, 24 Thurston Point Road, Gloucester, MA 01930. Obituary: Captain Joseph John Testaverde, 63, lifelong Gloucester Fisherman steamed out for his final trip on , 25, 2015 to join his late wife Joanne Puccio Testaverde. He was born in Gloucester on 24th 1951 to Captain Rosario Salve Testaverde and Antonina Lena (Randazza) Testaverde into a Sicilian family tradition of fishing. It was the sea that ran through his veins, starting at the age of 7 as his fathers deckhand and eventually becoming owner and Captain of his own boats. Joe was a graduate of Gloucester High School Class of 1969 and a graduate of The Franklin Institute studying architectural design. He lived in Gloucester his entire life and you could catch him in his earlier years in the pilot house of one of his boats aboard the Linda B, The Peter and Linda, The Nina T or at Fishermans Wharf mending nets or more importantly in the focsle cooking for the crew. Joe immersed himself into the life and was always at the front lines of political change advocating for fishermans rights with the Gloucester Fisheries Commission , Waters Way Commission and many other fisheries causes. He was a shareholder as well as past president of the Fishermans Wharf . In 1994, he was the recipient of the National Fisherman Highliner of the year award. Joe enjoyed speaking on advisory councils to fight back against the Government restrictions with not anger and frustration but with science and innovation. When he was not at sea he was spending time with his family or taking trips to other ports to learn of ways to improve the industry he loved so much. In later days you might catch him at the office a bench down the boulevard where he and his most treasured dog Boston Blackie would be meeting up with his friends. He loved to reminisce and share stories of how Gloucester was ack in the day. Recently Joe has spent his days passing on his cooking skills in his daughters kitchen and telling stories of their familys rich heritage. If you knew Joe personally, you know of his integrity, his large heart and his ever-giving nature. Joe leaves an enormous sadness in the community that he loved so much. Joe is survived by; his brothers Thomas and his wife Rosanne, Salvatore and his wife Joanne; sister-in-law, Jean Testaverde and aunt Josie Ciaramitaro; Five children Christine Testaverde and Larry Luce, Gina Testaverde-Williams and Nathan Williams, Antonina and Stephen Crabtree, Annemarie Testaverde-Palmatier and Adam Palmatier, Rosario Joseph Anthony Testaverde. As well as his beloved grandchildren Rosemarie, Carissa, and Joanne Luce, Brittany, Chase and Logan Williams, Makenzie J. Taylor and Anessa Palmatier. He also leaves behind his treasured dog Boston Blackie. He was predeceased by his parents Rosario Salve and Lena Nina (Randazza) Testaverde; his beloved brother John S. Testaverde, in laws Nora and Anthony Puccio. Visiting hours in the Greely will be held on , 1st from 4 to 8 p.m. His funeral will be held from the Greely , 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on at 8:45 a.m. followed by a prayer service in St. Anns Church on at 9:30 a.m. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
