Tong Presented at the funeral service by Philip Chan, Commander of the American Legion - Chinatown Post, 18, 2010 Jerry Tze Yuen Tong was born on 13, 1927, in the rural clan village called Fook Hong Lay (also known as Lung Giang Hong) located between Shuibu and Dajiang, in the Taishan (Hoysan) District of Guangdong Province in southern China. He was a farm boy, who farmed rice and tended water buffalo, and yet, was both studious and athletic. Some of his school essays from the 1930s have been preserved by the local historical society in his village to this day. Jerry was very close to his grandfather, Yi Yuan Tong, and Jerry became the village patriarch at age 16 when his grandfather passed away. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, Jerry was scheduled to emigrate to America and join his father, Tan Sum Tong, in Chicago in 1941, but after taking the train from Canton to Shanghai, he found that a scalper had sold his ship ticket, and the port of Shanghai was closed due to the war with Japan, so Jerry returned to his village. By 1947, Jerrys father had gained citizenship through serving in the U.S. Army, and Jerry, his sister (Yolanda Tin Won Tong), and his mother (Hing Fong Lee Tong) all reunited in Chicago, after a 14-year separation, just in time to staff and operate their Chinese takeout business located at 3407 W. Bryn Mawr, known as The Lee. During the post-war housing shortage, Jerrys parents and sister lived temporarily in a GI trailer camp where Northeastern Illinois University now stands, while Jerry slept in the restaurant kitchen. later moved to an apartment in Chinatown at 225 W. Alexander and made the daily commute by car, with Jerry driving from Chinatown to the Bryn Mawr Avenue, 363 days a year. Jerry learned the English alphabet and how to read and write in English for the first time by attending night school in Chicago. He attended Lane Technical High School, earning his G.E.D. in the U.S. Army after he was drafted in 1952. Like his father, he loved to read and he developed a much wider vocabulary and knowledge of different subjects than most of his peers in the restaurant business. While serving in the U.S. Army in Korea between 1952-1954, Jerry earned the rank of corporal and served in the Intelligence Corps after being trained in Mandarin to assist in the interrogation of captured mainland Chinese soldiers. his honorable discharge from the Army, Jerry rejoined his father to operate the restaurant. In 1954, Jerry and his father opened a new take-out restaurant down the street at 3411 W. Bryn Mawr, named Tongs Tea Garden, and later added a dining room in 1970. Jerry married Linda Kam Ling Chan in Hong Kong in of 1956. Jerry and Linda donated their wedding party money to Jerrys widowed cousin Yuet Lan Hui, who was struggling to raise her six children in Hong Kong, and the Tong family continued to support the Hui family until they could emigrate to Canada during the early 1970s. Linda was not able to join Jerry in Chicago until of 1958, due to bureaucratic difficulties with the U.S. consulate office in Hong Kong. It took a phone call from Senator Everett Dirksen to clear this up. Jerry and Linda eventually had three children, Bill, Betty, and Dolly, all of whom worked at Tongs Tea Garden while growing up, and all three eventually earned college degrees. As hard as he worked in the restaurant, Jerry was also an avid gardener, and he also raised birds and tropical fish. Jerry retired at age 56 and closed Tongs Tea Garden in of 1984, after nearly 30 years in business, and later leased out the restaurant, which still operates today as Hunan Wok. He then worked part-time as the dining room host at Yee Wall Restaurant in downtown Chicago until 1990. Jerry was a long-time member of the American Legion Chinatown Post and the Hip Sing Association, and he was instrumental in establishing the Chicago chapter of the Tong-Yan (Hong-Gin) Family Association in 1995. During of 1996, Jerry fulfilled his life-long dream to visit China. He and his adult children Bill, Betty, and Dolly went on a 21-day tour of China, visiting 9 cities and his home village in Taishan. During this trip, Jerry re-established contact with his village cousins, and later helped their children complete their schooling in China with financial support from him and other relatives in the United States. In 1993, Jerry and Linda celebrated the marriage of their son Bill to Wendy Xu. In 1994, Jerry and Linda celebrated the birth of their first grandchild, Cindy, and in 1999, the birth of their first grandson, Dennis. In 2006, Jerry celebrated his 80th birthday at a party attended by many relatives (including many who came from out of town) and friends. Jerry lived a long and full life, making many friends from all walks of life along the way. His family, relatives, and friends spoke lovingly of his big smile, kindness, personal generosity, positive influence, and integrity throughout his life.
