Obituary: Matriarch of Stewart Family and Margaret Beatrice Hill Stewart (age 97) passed away at her home, at peace and with a soft smile, on , 24, 2014. Since the passing of her husband, John T. Stewart, Jr. in the early 1980s, she has been referred to with great affection as the matriarch of both the Stewart family and the Stewart staff. Her friends and associates affectionately referred to her as Lady Margaret because she always carried herself in a stately and regal manner, bolstered by a hidden reservoir of energy and creativity. Mrs. Stewart was born in Capitol Heights, Maryland on 23, 1917, into a family that held commitment to family, education, and community in high esteem. Throughout her life, she exemplified these values in all her family, business and personal affairs. Soon after meeting John T. Stewart Jr., whom she frequently described as handsome and debonair, the two fell in love and were married. To this union were born two sons, John T. Stewart, III and Carlin O. Stewart, Sr. Mrs. Stewart left her career in education and teaching when her husband asked her to join the Stewart family funeral business, which his father, John T. Stewart, Sr. had established in 1900. Mrs. Stewart worked in tandem with her husband, and together they expanded the distinguished Stewart Services legacy into a business that has served the citizens of the Washington, DC, metropolitan area for well over 114 years. The Stewart is today the longest continuously operating African American family-owned business in the Washington, DC, area. her husbands passing, Mrs. Stewart, along with her sons and later her granddaughter, strove to maintain the highest standards of professional and public service, a legacy she dubbed The Tradition of Stewartship. Despite the multiple demands of her familys thriving business, she found time in her busy schedule to contribute generously both of her expertise and monies to a diverse number of religious, civic, education, and community organizations and meaningful causes. In 2000, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Stewart , Margaret and her family established the Stewart Fund. This fund awards scholarships for students as well as emergency aid for services to help families in need. In 2006, the family established another fund under the auspices of that Foundation - The John T. and Margaret B. Stewart Fund - to further contribute to communities in Prince Georges and the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Mrs. Stewart was the first female to serve as president of the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce. She expressed her strong support for womens issues by serving as national treasurer for the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated; as a member of the Board of Governors of the Womens National Democratic Club; and as a member of the Advisory Board of the Womens National Bank. She manifested her love of teaching and education and her commitment to her community, church, and religion by serving on many other local and national boards and giving financially with generosity to many. Mrs. Stewart leaves to honor and celebrate her life her son, Carlin O. Stewart, Sr. (Bonita); daughter-in-law, Norma Jenkins Stewart (John T. III deceased); grandchildren, Carlin O. Jr., Stacye, Natasha, Shelli and Nicole Stewart; and great-grandchildren, Brea Stewart Newman and Nathaniel John-Luke Stewart. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Stewart Fund or the John T. and Margaret B. Stewart Fund, the Community Foundation for Prince Georges , PO Box 3418, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-3418.
