▰ Jannette Nealy Sockwell

Died January 26, … More Information
Jannette Nealy Sockwell, born April 2, 1919 entered eternal life January 26, 2015 in Washington, District of Columbia. Jannette was 95. Obituary: Jannette Nealy Sockwell was born on 2, 1919 in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada to John Nealy and Leila Baker Nealy. She was the eldest of the couples three children, and is preceded in death by her brother, Dr. John Nealy, and a sister, Doris Nealy, who died during infancy. Her father was a sleeping car porter on the Canadian Northern Railroad. During childhood, Jannette also lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Chicago, Illinois prior to moving permanently to Washington D.C. in 1939.
A stickler for education, Leila had instilled its value in her daughter, Jannette, having herself achieved Normal Department degrees from Edward Waters (Jacksonville) in 1908 and from Atlanta University in 1910, the nation's oldest graduate institution serving a predominantly African-American student population. Jannette followed Leila's example, receiving a two-year degree from City Junior (Chicago) in 1939, her B.A. in education from Howard University (Washington D.C.) in 1954, and her Masters Degree in education from American University (Washington D.C.) in 1969. She then completed all sixty hours of required coursework toward her doctorate at American University before concluding that completing the rigorous dissertation requirements would not further her income as a career teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools. A tribute to her diligence is that she persevered over more than two decades to achieve advanced degrees in Washington at night, generally after full days as a substitute and later permanent teacher, and all the while, raising her family.
Jannette had moved to Washington D.C. in 1939, where she met her future husband and life partner, Oliver Richard Sockwell, while both were working at the old Bureau of Engraving and Printing. married in 1942, and began their family with the birth of Oliver Jr. in 1943, followed by Robert Nealy Sockwell in 1947.
Jannette's husband, Oliver, retired from the U.S. Department of State in 1975 as a Foreign Service Reserve Officer. From that time, and particularly after Jannette retired from teaching in 1986, she and Oliver travelled the world, often with friends, and enjoying the benefits of Oliver's affiliation with the State Department Recreation Association. travelled extensively, throughout the United States, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, South America and the Caribbean, always returning with many photos and unique souvenirs.
Jannette departed this life on , 26 at the Knollwood Services in Washington D.C. Her 72-year marriage had ended less than one year ago on 19, 2014, with Oliver's death at the Washington and Hospice. Her life mission completed, she will join Oliver in eternal bliss. Her ashes will be placed with her husband's at the Arlington National , Columbarium Court No. 7. She leaves behind her two sons, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Obituary: Mother Evelyn Lucille Snowden, the third of five daughters, was born 22, 1916, in Dickerson, Maryland, to the late Washington and Nettie Lee Hamilton. Mother Snowden took her journey from earth to her heavenly home on , 30, 2016. Times weren always easy for Evelyn and her sisters. Her mother passed at the young age of 27, when Evelyn was only 5 years old, leaving her father, Mr. Hamilton to raise his five daughters with the assistance of their aunts. Evelyn received her formal education from Montgomery Public Schools. graduation, she moved to Washington, DC to live with her aunt Viola. At an early age, she married her high school sweetheart, Frederick L. Snowden, on 14, 1937. Shortly after their marriage, they started a family. Evelyn was a blessed and devoted homemaker, who raised three children, the late Frederick L. Snowden Jr., Dianne S. Jones and Veronica S. Spears. Although she never received her cosmetology license, God gifted her with the ability to beautifully style hair. Evelyn loved to wear stunning hats and loved to dress well. She was affectionately known as The Hat Lady. Everyone always looked forward to seeing which hat she would wear to church. She was also a devoted Redskin fan and watched every game faithfully. As the years progressed, Evelyn worked as a foster grandparent in the preschool at Rudolph Elementary School in Washington, D.C. where she was very instrumental in assisting teachers and providing them wisdom and experience on the nurturing of young children. During the early years of their marriage, Evelyn and her husband accepted Christ as their Savior. Shortly after, they joined The Way of the Cross Church where she sang in the choir for several years and met her long life friends and best buddies, Sister Freddie Lindsey and the late Sister Lucille C. Merritt. She later moved her membership to the Rehoboth Church of God, where she served for 15 years as the church secretary. much prayer, God moved their membership to the Evangel Cathedral where their membership remained until death. She and her husband served on the usher board and were nominated by Bishop John Meares, to serve as deacon and deaconess until their health began to decline. In this capacity, they completed training classes preparing them for ministry. graduation, they were appointed as marriage counselors and provided special ministering services for the church and congregation. Evelyn resided in the District of Columbia for 82 years, still vibrant in nature and with her sound mind. At the age of 96, Evelyns health declined and she needed assistance in caring for herself independently. During her remaining days, she was a resident of The Washington and Hospice. She passed away a few months shy of her 100th birthday and God continued to have His hands on her life until the very end. So we say farewell, but not goodbye, and because we know Jesus, we know we will see you again!! To God Be The Glory Mother Snowden remained an extraordinary and devoted wife of 67 years until Mr. Frederick L. Snowden Sr. went home to glory. Her only son, Frederick L. Snowden, Jr. also preceded her in death. Three of Evelyns sisters, Elsie, Myrtle, and Rebecca, are also deceased. Her dear sister Beulah Sneed Yarbough lives in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Mother Snowden leaves a legacy of cherished memories which will forever be treasured and remembered by her daughters, Dianne S. Jones (Maurice) of Washington, DC, and Veronica S. Spears (Richard) of Oxon Hill, MD, five grandchildren Dominic (Valerie) Snowden, Moye N. and Terrence L. Jones, Aaron D. Spears (Stella) and Bianca A. Jones (Johnny) and nine great-grandchildren, Dominic Snowden Jr., Haliena Washington (Greg); Terrence L. Jones II; Nayali, Aiyana, Henna, Kaaria, Raiz Spears, and BiJonn Jones; one great-great grandchild Maliyah and a host of other close relatives and friends.
