Obituary: Col. Ralph Anthony Sciolla died on Feb. 13, 2015, at Knollwood, a military retirement community in Washington, D.C. Ralphie, as he was affectionately addressed by his two loving wives, Claire and Anne, and Pop-Pop, as he was called by his 15 grandkids, was 94. He was born on May 14, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Gaetano and Angelina Sciolla. He was raised in Philadelphia with his two older brothers, Frank and Tony, and attended Northeast Regional High School where he became an accomplished soccer player. studying at the University of Pennsylvania for one year, he entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1941. Continuing to play soccer there, he was named captain of the schools team during his first year and, later, an All-American soccer player. He graduated on D-Day, 6, 1944. He began his more-than-30-year active duty career in the U.S. Army, beginning in the Field Artillery branch. He began his wartime service in World War II in 1945, fighting in the European Theater of Operations with the 89th Infantry Division Artillery. the war, he remained in Berlin, Germany, to serve in the Office of the Military Government, United States. While there, he met Claire McCarthy, who was stationed there with the foreign service. married in Philadelphia in 1947. Together they had five children. In 1947, he returned to the U.S. to a post at Ft. Benning, Georgia, where he commanded a battery of the 83rd Field Artillery. He then attended an advanced course at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, in 1948, and stayed to teach in the Department of Materiel. In 1952, he left to serve in the Korean War as S2, S3 with headquarters at the 45th Infantry Division Artillery. He came back to Ft. Sill to serve as the Chief of Survey Division in the U.S. Army Field Artillery School's Department of Observation. Soon after he attended and graduated from the Command and General Staff at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His career continued with a four-year stint at the Pentagon in the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. Then, beginning in 1961, he and his family lived in Verona, Italy, while he worked in intelligence at NATO Headquarters. The family then returned to the U.S. to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he in 1966 helped to form a new U.S. Army Training as commander of the Training Committee Group. A year later he departed for Vietnam, where he served as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, G2, at Long Binh. Upon his return he took a post as Assistant Chief of Staff, G3, at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. Then in 1970, he was ordered again to Italy to a post in Vicenza as Chief of Staff, G2, G3 -- guiding NATO interests in Italy, Greece and Turkey. His last assignment was Chief of Operations for the U.S. Army Readiness Region at Ft. Devens, where he coordinated reserve component units throughout six New England states and New York. He retired after a distinguished Army career in 1974. Following his retirement, he and his family settled happily in Shirley, Massachusetts, not far from Ft. Devens. Ralph applied his training and management experience in the Army to a position as director of corporate planning and training for a beer distributorship called Martin Distributing. In 1980, he received an MBA from Western New England . He was also active in city affairs in Shirley, serving as selectman in the city government. During the summers, he, Claire and their children lived at a seaside home in Longport, New Jersey. Into his later years, the house became a summer meeting place for his children and grandchildren, who would eat, drink and joke under the grape arbor in the backyard. Four years after his wife Claire's death, he married Anne Phillips on Jan. 9, 1993, the widow of one of his West Point classmates Lt. Col. Paul Washington Phillips (West Point Class of '44), who died in , 1988. then lived at Annes home in Harker Heights, Texas, for more than a decade, with summers in Longport. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Association of the U.S. Army, American Legion, Association of Graduates West Point, Army Athletic Association, Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce, Harker Heights Kiwanis, Heart of Texas West Point Society, Longport Historical Society, Civic Association, Sons of Italy and the 89th Infantry Division Society. His 14 military decorations included the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. His West Point classmates admired his great efficiency and enviable work ethics. An incredibly organized person, he could also listen attentively, empathize and provide assistance to those who needed it. From birth an ardent Roman Catholic, he lived his faith in his spiritual approach to solutions in everyday life. His family feels that when he meets his Maker he will be told, Well done, my faithful son. Be thou at peace. His friends and family enjoyed his subtle sense of humor and personable, friendly demeanor. He was a special person: a loyal son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed. He was predeceased by his first wife, Claire McCarthy Sciolla, in 1989; his second wife, Anne Phillips Sciolla in 2013; and his two brothers, Anthony Sciolla in 2007 and Frank Sciolla in 2008. He is survived by his five children, Juliana Sciolla (Peter) Weddle of Stamford, Connecticut; Andrea Sciolla (Michael) Dickens of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Ralph Anthony Tony (Lana) Sciolla Jr. of Carlsbad, California; Thomas Tom Sciolla of Ladera Ranch, California; and Berto (Wendy) Sciolla of New Canaan, Connecticut -- as well as his three stepchildren, Alicia (John) Klaffky of Kensington, Maryland; Charlotte (David) Ramsey of Radford, Virginia; and Paul (Maureen) Phillips of Bellaire, Texas.
