Obituary: George Edward Spahn age 60 of Danbury, CT died suddenly on 26th 2011 at Danbury Hospital with his beloved family at his side. He was the husband of Barbara E. (Pira) Spahn. George was born in Brooklyn, NY on 11th 1951. A wonderful son to his predeseased parents George and Margaret Spahn and dear brother to his sister Marge. He grew up in Lake Ronkonkoma, NY. He graduated in 1968 from Sachem High school and went on to graduate from Columbia University. At the time of his passing, George was Director, Image Quality in the Clinical Science Department at FUJIFILM Medical Systems U.S.A., Inc. headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. As manager of the Image Quality Group, George was Fujifilms resident expert on radiographic exposure technique (manual and automatic exposure control), anti-scatter grids, and radiographic positioning. George worked in quality control for mammography and general radiography and supported clinical and regulatory technical writing for United States Food and Drug Administration submissions and clinical risk assessments. George joined Pyne Corporation, the precursor to Fujifilm in 1981 in the Technical Department where he was responsible for field technical support in the eastern United States. Georges responsibilities grew to include managing technical training, and in that role over his 30 years trained hundreds of Fujifilm sales and other field team members in radiologic technology and product knowledge, many of whom are still with the company today. Pyne Corporations acquisition by Fujifilm in 1986, George became companywide manager for the Imaging Specialist group. During this time George was instrumental in developing the companys Support Plus Program with Educational Update, Quality Control, and Radiology Administration modules. In the 1990s, George successfully consolidated and managed the imaging specialist and electronic imaging applications specialist groups. Georges continued to work in quality control. To facilitate quality control of Fuji Computed Radiography, the first digital radiographic systems, George envisioned the FCR One-Shot Phantom radiographic test object, which the company introduced and is still popular with users today. With Fujifilms expansion and success in electronic imaging, the customer-facing imaging specialist group grew into what is now the Professional Services Group in the service organization, and George was named Director of the newly formed Image Quality and Clinical Research group in the late 1990s. It was in that role that George shared in the Fujifilm President Divisional Award in 2006 for his contributions leading to the successful FDA approval of Fujifilms Computed Radiography (CR) mammography. George and his team were perennial supporters of demonstrations of the companys technology and products at the annual scientific meeting of the Radiological Society of North America and Georges expertise was acknowledged at numerous international application meetings at Fujifilm in Japan. In the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance, George participated in the Display Vendors, X-Ray Computed Radiography / Digital Radiography, and Mammography Groups as well as the X-Ray Imaging Standards Committee. George was an invited speaker at many professional society meetings, including the annual meetings of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and American of Medical Physics. In addition to his wife Barbara, George is survived by his two sons: Bryon E. Spahn and his wife Emily of New Milford, and Timothy G. Spahn and his wife Dawn of Danbury, his daughter: Melissa H. Hirsch and her husband Jeremy of New Milford, his sister: Margaret David of Escondido, CA, his beloved aunt Lowayne Degnan of St. Petersburg, FL, his brother in law Thomas Pira and his wife Claudia, four grandchildren: Luke, Jolene, Landon, and Braydon, his two nieces Patty Kelly and Kathy Hugelmeyer, and nephew Michael Brand. services will take place on 1st at 11:00am in the Green , 57 Main Street, Danbury. A reception at the Miry Brook Firehouse, Danbury will follow the services. Cremation arrangements will be private. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm, with a closing prayer at 8:00pm. Contributions in Georges memory may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 25 West Street Danbury, CT 06810, to benefit its Dorothy Day program. |
