Obituary: At age 82, Joyce Small completed her journey in this life on 13, 2015 after fighting Multiple Sclerosis for more than 40 years. She was born on 21, 1933 in Hartford to the late Leroy and Fannie Duncan. Joyce attended Hartford schools. As a youth she was a member of the Tigerettes, a softball and basketball team established for African American girls in Hartford. She was also a member of the Baronetts, a Young Ladies Social Club that provided charitable and community services. Joyce was a strong, talented, smart, and faithful woman. She cherished Gay and Tiffany taking great pride in all their accomplishments. She loved her family and was loyal to those she called her friend. Prior to her illness Joyce worked for the Federal Government in the defense supply area and retired in the late 70s when she took ill. Joyce was a lifelong member of Mount Olive Baptist Church where she worshipped for as long as she was physically able. Her dedication and support to Mount Olive continued throughout her confinement at Kimberly Hall. She was awarded a plaque declaring her a Member in Good Standing for over 50 years! Joyce Small is survived by her devoted daughter Gabrielle (Gay) Collins of Fairfax, VA, her granddaughter Tiffany (Curtis) Brooks also from Fairfax, VA; her sister Jeannette (Duncan) Hollis of New London, CT and her brother Joseph Duncan of Dallas TX, and other family and friends, among them, a very special cousin, Carrie Smith of Hartford, and two sister-girlfriends, Florence Tootsie Wollaston of Manchester and Irene Perry of Hartford. She also leaves her dedicated Mount Olive family, especially the late Deacon Kelly and his family, Doris Johnson of Windsor and other prayer warriors who visited her in her final days. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Greater Hartford was always a source of help and support and Joyce and family greatly appreciated them. We sincerely thank them and encourage your support to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. |

Obituary: Fay Hope Slywa, 77, of East Windsor, peacefully passed away on 8, 2017 while hospitalized in Westfield, MA. Daughter of the late Alfred Smith and Ruth (Pihl) Smith, Fay was born in Hartford on 27, 1939 and was a graduate of Hartford High School. She moved to East Windsor over 45 years ago and was a loving and supportive mother and homemaker for most of her life. Fay proudly retired from Hallmark Cards after 20 years of service in order fulfillment. In later years Fay found happiness in the Poquonock Community Church and became actively involved in the womens craft group. She was a gifted crafter and seamstress who made countless blankets, pillows, dresses, pajamas, and Halloween costumes for her daughters and grandchildren. It was her personal goal to create a baby blanket for the first-born child of each one of her seven grandchildren, and she proudly made it to 6 ¾. Fay spent many enjoyable hours volunteering time as a Girl Scout Leader and later in the Poquonock Community Church womens fellowship. She was patient and always eager to help someone with learning to tackle new and more challenging projects. Her quiet, dedicated, and independent nature allowed her to be most effective working behind the scenes. She avoided the limelight, resisted praise and remained ever focused on the task at hand - no matter how small. Fay was devoted to her family and friends whether she was caring for ailing relatives, watching over her young grandchildren, or volunteering at church. Fay enjoyed traveling and journeyed as far as Texas and Yellowstone National Park just to spend time with her grandchildren. Her diagnosis with ALS was heartbreaking and throughout this whirlwind journey, Fay bravely weathered the storm with a prayerful spirit and a calm and quiet dignity. Her memory is forever cherished by her daughters, Linda Morton and her husband Robert of Suffield, Kimberley Coffin of Southampton, MA, and Susan Khammar and her husband George of Fort Worth, TX; a sister, Patricia Antrim of Henry, IL; seven grandchildren, Jason Coffin, Justin Coffin, Kyle Morton, Megan Morton, Katia Khammar, Gregory Khammar and Alexander Khammar as well as a many nieces and nephews and their families. Fay was predeceased by her former husband, Leonard Slywa and three siblings, Alfred Smith, Jr., Gail Michaels, and Deanna Tyszka. Fay had a special relationship with her recently deceased sister Deanna, and her husband, Peter Tyszka. Fay and Deanna were best friends. Wed like to thank Peter Tsyzka continued love and support for Fay throughout her journey. We would also like to acknowledge the doctors, nurses, and staff at Western Mass Hospital for their compassion, professionalism, and exemplary level of care they provided. were the calm through our storm. Her family will receive friends on , 12, 2017 from 1-4 p.m. at the Carmon Windsor , 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. A funeral service will be held on at 10 a.m. in the Poquonock Community Church, 1817 Poquonock Ave., in the Poquonock section of Windsor with burial following in Elm Grove , Windsor. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the ALS Association – CT Chapter, 4 Oxford Rd, Milford, CT 06460. To send notes of condolences to her family, please visit www.carmonfunerahome.com. |
