Obituary: Lee Peter Pete Silvernale 5, 1934 - 24, 2017 LPs Story Lee Peter Pete Silvernale died, surrounded by family, in his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on 24th, 2017. He was 83 years old and lived a long and full life filled with love and relationships. He was born 5, 1934 in Spokane, WA; graduated in 1951 from Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane and in 1955 from Whitman in Walla Walla Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He later attended Graduate School at the University of Nebraska and University of California San Diego studying Physics and Communication Theory. In his early career he worked in engineering positions for Western Electric specializing in developing complex computer numerical control for machining of aircraft structural components. He then took a senior engineering position developing guidance and flight control for the Centaur rocket which provided the rains and the brawn for the NASA Surveyor probes which resulted in the first soft landing on the moon in of 1966. The Surveyor probes provided valuable data confirming crewed landings would be possible which was essential to the success of the Apollo program. Pete maintained an intense curiosity and interest in space exploration and in the knowledge of the universe for the rest of his life. Pete met and then married Pearl Elaine McKenney in 1959 and they began their lives in Nebraska and then, Moses Lake WA , where in 1960 they had their first son Daniel Lee. later moved to San Diego California where they added to the family with the arrival of Julia Alane in 1963 and Glenn Peter in 1964. In 1966 Pete and Pearl began the construction of their dream house and by 1968 the family moved into their home in East San Diego (El Cajon) on an acre of avocado trees that would be their home for the next 36 years. In addition to keeping his children busy managing the orchard, Pete held a number of senior engineering and Engineering Director positions where he specialized in complex electro-mechanical system product development used in the Semiconductor Industry to handle and evaluate a broad spectrum of integrated circuit functioning and capability. Pete held engineering positions in the High Performance Computing at University California San Diego and at Wavetek. He held Director of Engineering positions at Symtek Systems, Delta Design, InterOcean Systems, and retired from Micro Instrument in 2001. Pete loved his work, woke up every day at the crack of dawn; often left before first daylight and was the example of a hardworking man. He enjoyed building and supporting products as much as building and developing teams. The results of his efforts were important to him but equally important were the relationships he built along the way. While Pete worked hard to successfully provide for his family, his highest priority and value was his relationship to family and friends. Pete and Pearl not only built a home on an acre of avocado trees, they built a family. Pete would often wake the family early on a weekend morning with the loud refrain of Beethovens 5th Symphony and a resounding Wake Up, You e Burning Daylight! Days would be filled with projects around the property; quality time was defined by building a deck, automotive repair, or working in the orchard. He was the original Do-it-yourself man and anything worth doing was worth doing right. But Pete was anything but pretentious, while he had the best personal computers available in the 70s & 80s, and knew from his Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency work that internet technology was the thing of the future, his cars and TVs often required vise grips to roll windows down or change channels; he even at one point used twine to operate his windshield wipers. His Corporate Bosses would implore him to get a car befitting his position; he never did. Pete knew that accomplishments and material possessions were important to a point, but that the most important things in his life revolved around love and relationships. He made it a priority that his family would be connected with each other and to the larger extended family. Many happy times were spent with both the Wetzel and Silvernale families over the last half century which has resulted in unbreakable extended family and cross-generational relationships. Whether it was Thanksgiving & Christmas Holidays with the Wetzels or summer vacations with the Silvernales in Coeur dAlene, Idaho there was always great food, laughter and love. He loved his siblings and made it a point to try to spend time with them as much as possible, almost every summer for the last 12 years! Pete had many interests in addition to spending time with family. He had a deep love of the outdoors and enjoyed sightseeing, camping and hiking. He loved skiing and gave that gift to all his children. He was instrumental in teaching his grandchildren (Erika & Claire) how to ski. He loved museums and old towns; tried never to pass up a biergarten, and loved a cold beer or glass of wine. Pete loved a good steak! He loved being a Dad and Grandpa and spending time with his children and grandchildren and went out of his way to do things that would bolster their confidence. His motto was, All you need to do is keep telling them they are the smartest and most beautiful things ever. He cared about his nieces and nephews and made it a priority to be there during important life events. He loved hearing everyones stories. Above all he loved spending time with his wife and partner of 59 years. He acknowledged his wife for keeping the family together throughout the years and for helping the family build an environment of emotional warmth where love, kindness, sensitivity, generosity and unconditional acceptance could thrive. There was no shortage of hugs in the family of LP Silvernale because of Pearl. In addition to continued... |
