Obituary: Harvey Alvin Swenson, the second child of five, was born at home on 20, 1924, to Albin and Margaret (Ward) Swenson in Hewitt, Minnesota. the 8th grade, Harvey left school to work on a nearby farm and help support his family. On 21, 1944 he was inducted into the United States Army. He was a member of the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, serving in the Rhineland and Central European Campaigns. On 28, 1945, while serving as a scout, Harvey was wounded by a sniper earning him the Purple Heart. On 25, 1946, he returned home for a brief time before heading out west. Harvey and his brother drove to Oregon, braving snowstorms in the Rocky Mountains. Their aunt provided a place to stay and their cousins lined up
jobs at B.P. Johns Furniture where Harvey ran the band saw.

Harvey met Gladyas Mae Sanders in 1947 while visiting friends who lived near the Sanders family farm in Beaverton. Harvey was immediately interested in Gladyas when he was introduced to her. The two found they had a lot in common, having both grown up on a farm. The couple was married in Bethel Congregational Church in Beaverton, Oregon on 9, 1949.

Harvey built their family home on five acres in Beaverton, complete with a barn, at the intersection of Davies road and 135th. He eventually added two large garage/shops, where he garaged his motorhomes, trailers and his beloved boat, The Golly Bee. He spent much of his free time there, generally tinkering around or working on wood projects.

Harvey and Gladyas raised two children, daughter, Pamela, and son, Mark. had cows, chickens, rabbits, pigs, ducks, turkeys, horses, cats, and dogs, his favorite being a Golden Retriever named Penney Sue. He never owned another dog after her, and always had a special love for the breed from that time on. Harvey grew a variety of crops throughout the years and regularly shared his bounty with neighbors and fellow church members.

20 years, he left B.P. Johns and went to work for Tektronix. Harvey first worked in the custodial department there, and later moved to the carpentry shop. He retired from Tek after 20 years.

Harvey was an avid fisherman and member of the NW Steelheaders. He and the family spent many happy times on his boat, the Golly Bee, especially favoring the fishing on the Willamette River and Paulina Lake. In 1974, Harvey finished a family vacation cabin at LaPine, Oregon.

Harvey was a member of Bethel Congregational Church for 65 years. At Bethel, he helped with the outdoor work, participated in Lamplighters gatherings, served as a greeter and a deacon, sometimes visiting members in their homes.

Harvey was the strong, silent, type. When he did speak, it was generally, a yup, o, ohh?, or I spose. He will be remembered as someone who was always ready to help anyone, and who loved his family very much. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought him much joy.

Before and after retirement, Gladyas and Harvey traveled together in their motorhome to many destinations outside of Oregon. visited Harveys family in Minnesota several times. also took a cruise to Alaska, and made a memorable trip to Branson, Missouri. really enjoyed traveling the U.S. together.

The Davies Road home was the life-long family home. In the 1980s, four of the acres were sold, but Gladyas and Harvey remained in the home until 11 of 2014.

Harvey passed away at the home of his son, Mark, on 17, 2014 in Port Orchard, Washington.

He is predeceased by his loving wife Gladyas; his parents, Albin and Margaret; and both of his brothers. Survivors include his daughter Pam (husband, Keith); son, Mark (wife, Berta); sisters, Loma Baker and Leona Erickson; grandchildren, Patrick Swenson, Lindsy Stevens, Amanda Pigeon, Mallory Stevens, and Jennifer Bruschetto; 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
