Obituary: A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on 11th, a few weeks shy of his 101st birthday. Born the third of six children, Clayton was never one to shy away from hard work. He turned his hand to a variety of jobs throughout his lifetime, even riding the rails as a young man in search of better opportunities. His adventures on the road eventually took him to Yakima, where he met his wife Frances at an apple packing job. Clayton and Frances then moved to Seattle, where he built the family home in which they would raise their children, Ann and Larry, and live happily for the next 53 years. Clayton enjoyed watching baseball, hunting, and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with family. His kindness, warm chuckles, and loving nature will be dearly missed by all who knew him. ~ Published in the Seattle Times ~ You may recognize Clayton G. Summerville from the ad photo for Park Ridge Skilled in Shoreline, Washington. Clayton Summerville isn't a model, he has been a part of the Park Ridge Family for the past seven years, until his passing on 11th, 2013. He was featured in an article published on , 29th, 2008 edition of Fifty Focus by Marci Dehm, where he was able to personally tell his life story. Clayton lived 100 years of vivacious life, shy of his 101st birthday this year on 17th. He was a man of his word and dismissed any fuss over having been spotlighted in the Park Ridge spotlighted ad. I didn know what they were going to do with the picture, he said. Claytons soft spoken demeanor belies the active and adventurous life he once led. He was born in Columbus Junction in Iowa to Earl and Lillian (Griffith) Summerville, the third of six children. He quickly learned about hard work early and could turn his hand to many different jobs. He also learned about riding the rails. In those Depression Era days it was not uncommon for young men to hop aboard a freight train to try and find work in another town. Even one of his favorite novelists, Louis LAmour, spent time riding the rails as a youth. A side-door Pullman, it was called, Summerville remembered. It was a dangerous means of travel. Young hobos often faced the wrath of rail yard guards known as ulls. were also at the mercy of criminals. It was while he and his friends were looking for work in Oklahoma City that they had all their possessions stolen by crooks whose names would later become legend - Bonnie and Clyde. We didn know who he was then, but we found out later. The rails eventually led Clayton to Washington State. He heard that his Uncle John was working for an apple packing company in Yakima. Eager to get reacquainted with his uncle and, also, to see if there was any work available, Summerville took a side-door Pullman to the Yakima Valley. Uncle John turned out to be the foreman at the packing house. Clayton got a job building apple crates. He also met a pretty young fruit packer named Frances and fell in love. soon were married and started their family with a son and daughter. There followed a more settled period for Clayton. He attended the brand new Perry Technical Institute to learn a skilled trade in auto sheet metal. But the spirit of adventure must have been calling to him because he also wandered over to McAllister Field and started taking flying lessons. discovering that jobs in Seattle were paying twice as much as they did in Yakima, Clayton moved his family to the Seattle area and took a job at an auto body shop on the corner of Westlake and Roy. He joined a flight club near Lake Washington and occasionally rented a plane for the grand sum of $5 per hour. I finally decided that I needed a house more than I needed to fly. By 1949, Clayton has purchased land locally, cleared it and began to build his own house. two years of steady work, the house was ready. It was to be the Summerville family home for the next 53 years and still stands today near Briarcrest Elementary School. Many happy years followed with his family. Clayton enjoyed watching baseball, hunting, fishing, and in later years living vicariously through the literature of Clive Cussler. He once caught a 46 pound salmon in Neah Bay and had a trophy of a five-point elk in the place of honor over his desk for many years. Claytons wife, Frances, fell and broke her wrist, they moved into Park Ridge for her added care. Other friends had also made Park Ridge their home. Frances, Claytons best friend, love of his life, and wife of 65 years passed away in of 2004. He is also preceded in death by his parents and five siblings, Elaine, Randal, Louis, Gilbert, and Phyllis. Clayton is survived by his son, Larry (Patti) Summerville; daughter, Ann (Steve) Carlson; grandchildren, Lori Gamblin and Heather Poulsen; great-grandchildren, Giselle and Griffith Gamblin; many loving extended family and friends. A funeral service will be held at Acacia in Seattle on , 12th, 2013 at 11AM. A graveside committal and reception, for a time of continued sharing and fellowship, will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 12509 27th Ave NE, Seattle, Washington 98127 (206) 363-0110 To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die ~ Thomas Campbell. Claytons memory will be forever cherished by the many lives he enriched. |
