Obituary: Dorothea Catherine Kollmeyer Sullivan 1 1919 - 13 Jun 2010 A Life Celebrated Dorothea Catherine Kollmeyer Sullivan was born 1 1919 in Buhl, Idaho to Henry and Antoinette Kollmeyer. She was the second of four children and included Bernard, Charles, and Florence. Like many other children of that time and place, Dorothea was raised on a farm with all the hard work, endless chores, and equally great rewards. She always claimed she could handle a pair of draft horses as well as her brothers. Bernard and Charles never challenged her claim. In the spring of 1937, Dorothea graduated from Buhl High School and went on to business school in Boise Idaho. Eager to follow her pioneering spirit, she left home and was hired by Pan American Airlines. She was trained initially as a flight attendant but failed the flight physical; a medical condition would prevent her from flying as a crewmember. Thankfully, Pan Am leadership recognized early the work ethic and the innate sense of team spirit and loyalty imbued in this Idaho farm-girl. She was quickly moved into leadership ranks and appointed as manager of several Pan Am hub offices to include Los Angeles, Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Portland. The pride she felt for her efforts to get Pan Am off the ground were evident in the many stories she told of her adventures in the Alaska territory and the fascinating people she met. It was during her assignment as manager of the Pan Am office in Portland, that Dorothea was invited on a blind date-her first and only blind date. Robert Sullivan, then a medical student, escorted Dorothea to a Medical Student Dance. This date was a total success. Robert returned home that evening and reported to his mother that he, had met, the cutest girl, and boy could she dance! Dorothea and Robert were married a short time later on 26 1949. Not long after their marriage, Robert graduated from medical school and moved with Dorothea to Vancouver, Washington. Dorothea and Dr. Robert Sullivan became the very proud parents of John Brooks on 16 1950; Katherine Ann, 28 1952; Maureen Patricia, 8 May 1953; Michael Robert, 2 1955, and Jean Louise on 28 1960. Dorothea and Dr. Sullivan were also the grandparents of six children and great grandparents to one. She raised her children and grand children with the same exuberance and focus she learned on the farm and while working for Pan Am. Her children are exceptionally grateful for the good schools they attended, help with the homework, all the lessons in art, music, dance, swimming, and all those things that come from the love of a caring parent. She ensured her children felt deeply connected to their extended family of grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and their supportive friends and all of their families too. For over sixty years, Dorothea was a productive, welcomed, and highly respected member of the Vancouver community, a mainstay at St Josephs Church and according to those who played, a viscous bridge player. Despite the loss of her husband, Robert, in 2003, Dorothea enjoyed extraordinarily good health until her final days. On 13 2010, surrounded by two of her daughters, Dorothea quietly and peacefully slipped into her afterlife. When told of her passing, Ms. Mary Natta, one of Dorotheas dearest and oldest friends commented Dorothea was always in charge of everything to include the time of her death. And if there is such a thing, hers was a beautiful parting. A beautiful parting . so fitting an end for Dorothea Sullivan, an extraordinary caring, passionate, and beautiful lady. Remembrances of her children: John. I remember her patience, especially when dealing with me. I was often late, lazy, or forgot something, like the big school assignment or a test the next day. Those faults are still evident today, although I hope not as frequent or severe. But what I am now, is all because of mom. Katie. Mom was the quintessential organizer. She was able to orchestrate the activities of five children without missing a beat, except for the time she forgot to pick-up Mike from speech class. She was my role model for life and taught me to be proud of who I am and to be humble in the sight of God. Maureen. My fondest memories of mom are the trips in the car to Idaho to visit all the Florence cousins. Not too many people are brave enough to pack-up five kids and head out for 600 miles. Dad of course was working and, recalling one previous trip to California, not too sure he would have been much help. On one very memorable trip, I think we made it all the way to Pendleton, Oregon before we had to call it a day. Another favorite memory was of how much fun the girls had when Katie came to visit and we went shopping and out to lunch. By the end of lunch, my cheeks were tired of all the laughing at each other during our dressing room follies, and the many toasts to another lousy day. Mike. On a recent visit, I was shocked to hear mom declare I hate to cook. I recalled all the excellent meals, from a hot breakfast every school day for five picky kids, to the huge feasts for the combined Sullivan-Kollmeyer-Florence clan. She knew everyones favorites . their likes and dislikes. Consideration for others and dedication to friends and family, I can only hope to have inherited . and oh yes, her amazing memory. Jeanie. Mom was a great going-out-to-lunch partner. We both looked forward to our weekly get-togethers. Sometimes it was just lunch, and other times it included shopping. We could solve the worlds problems over a glass of wine. |
