Obituary: John was born at his home in Mabton, Washington on May 31st, 1946. That is where John learned his strong work habits. He graduated from Mabton High in 1964 along with many of his lifelong friends, among them Dick and Caroline hart and Gordon and Connie King. Upon graduation, John enrolled in the auto body class at Perry Trade in 1965 and graduated in 1966. John and his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Bush, married on 22, 1966. In of 1967 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam, being honorably discharged in of 1969. serving in the Army he came back home to the valley and settled in Yakima. He worked in the body shop at Hahn Motors until he started his own business, S & S Auto Body, in the mid 1970s, with good friend Dave Siebol. John then went to work for a good friend, Art Guissi, at Paint and Equipment Supply in 1987. In 1991, John took a job with PPG Industries. He loved his job as a territory manager in the automotive finishes division. He was very good at what he did and set records for sales in his area year after year. John retired from PPG in 2001 because of health issues. Over the years John made many, many good friends in the auto body/paint trade, too many to name. John did have a special relationship with Mike Daniels; Mike was like a second son to him and John was very proud to have him as a friend. John dearly loved his family. His life revolved around his family, specifically his grandkids. Those who knew John, heard him say how proud he was of his four grandchildren, T.J. & Kacy Lane and Jarett & Brian Sterbenz. He was never shy about bragging about his grandchildren and their individual gifts. John was a youth football coach for his son Jeff in the early 80s. His love of sports was passed on to his whole family. John loved to fish and camp with his family. His favorite spot to go was Twin Lake on the Colville Indian Reservation, where his family gathered for a week every . He also enjoyed fishing for steelhead in the fall and small mouth bass in summer. John and his wife Phyllis loved to travel with their high school buddies. went on a Caribbean cruise with Dick and Caroline Hart and many trips to Hawaii with Gordon and Connie King. Two of Johns goals after his lung transplant were to go snorkeling again in Hawaii with Gordon and Connie and bass fishing with his grandsons. John and Phyllis traveled in their RV to Yuma, Arizona to spend the winter numerous times. enjoyed the time they spent with Rod and Annette Bush and Jerry and Judy Bush. John also enjoyed working on his hot rod, a 1956 Chevy Bel-Air. This car was his pride and joy. John and Bradey Lane put many hours into his car, getting it exactly the way he wanted it. John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Phyllis, his son, Jeff and his wife, Carol, his daughter, Kelly and her partner, Brian, his grandchildren, T.J. Lane, Kacy Lane, Jarett Sterbenz and Brian Sterbenz, brothers Joe Sterbenz of Spokane, Don Sterbenz of Yakima and Mike Sterbenz of Sunnyside, and his sister, Betty Harris of Walla Walla. John was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary Sterbenz, his sisters, Edna Wilcox and Helen Lavachek and his grandson, Ryan Sterbenz. Obituary: Leila (Gudgel) Sterba 07-27-1942 -- 01-04-2012 Young 69 years of age, lived her life to fullest... Leila passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, surrounded by family. Leila was a beloved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend... Leila gave everyone wonderful, warm, heartfelt memories that will live on in all of our hearts. Leila May (Gudgel) Sterba, was born and raised in Seattle, WA ,by Loyal & Ruth Gudgel (deceased). Leila graduated from Highline High School in 1960. She worked as a telephone operator for Pacific NW Bell [remember, in those days, telephone operators physically made the telephone connection between callers through the switch board]. her initial training, she took her first live call (of all customers in Seattle) from her own Mother who was calling her own mother Grandmother Baney in Salem, Oregon. Later in life, she worked with her parents in a family business repairing radios and TVs. On 2, 1963 - she married the love of her life (for 48+ years) - Ernest Sterba. resided in Federal Way and raised two boys - Lennie and Vince. Leila was a devoted stay at home Mother, overseeing the boys education, was involved in their school activities, and supported their ambitions which continues in their lives today. She was very proud of their successes, and supported them through the tough moments in life as well. She was proud mother-in-law to John Miller (Lennies partner) and Pepper Sterba (Vinces wife). Her biggest pride and joy was being a Grandmother to Jacki, Taylor, Riki (husband Craig), and Robby. She enjoyed being actively involved in her grand-childrens lives as if she was raising them as her own. She particularly enjoyed every grandchilds sporting events, school functions, and other family events. She also enjoyed many memorable family trips to Oregon and Canada. Leila was a warm, open-hearted person, and saw the best in every individual that came in her life. Over the years, Leila stayed active. She was an avid bowler and was well known by many teams. She gained many friends. Leila and Ernie enjoyed their retirement years traveling locally and abroad. Leila is survived by her loving devoted family as well as her sister Sheila Rodriguez (husband, Butch), niece Angelas family, and numerous family and friends stretching from British Columbia, Canada, throughout the western USA and as far east as Texas.
