Obituary: Fran Steding passed away 23, 2011 having lived a long and productive life as a wife, mother, community activist and professional. Born 15, 1923, she recently celebrated her 88th birthday with family and friends. Fran was born in Volga, South Dakota and lived her childhood in Bruce, South Dakota. Valedictorian of her high school class of eighteen (18), she graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in Economics and Music (Organ). She was the first from SDSU to receive a Danforth Fellowship (1945) which took her to Ann Arbor and the campus of the University of Michigan. There she met her husband, John Steding, who had returned from his service in World War II to complete his undergraduate and graduate education in aeronautical engineering. Together they lived in Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Lancaster, California before settling on Mercer Island fifty-one (51) years ago. Fran served as church organist at the Methodist Church of Lancaster (1950s) and the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. Her specialty was working with the Stewardship committee. She took that talent with her to the Mercer Island Covenant Shores community where she marshaled the residents to increase their holiday bonus to staff and led their Residents Council for two years. Fran was a charter member of the Mercer Island Federation of Republican Women. She was the Campaign Chairman for Forward Thrust (1970). She served as Precinct Committeeman (1976) and worked with and for many candidates, especially Joel Pritchard in his campaigns for the US House of Representatives. Fran was a Camp Fire Girls leader and sponsor and was awarded the Wakan Award in 1970. Fran was active with the Mercer Island High School Parent Faculty Committee and she was active in the American Association of University Women in Indianapolis, Lancaster and Mercer Island. During their years in Lancaster, she and John performed in the local community musical productions and Fran was a winning competitor in the local county fairs pie baking contest (1950s). Mom was the family member to beat in Scrabble, always a winning partner in bridge and a huge fan of Mariners baseball. John passed away in 1995, and Fran is survived by her children, Sue (Gary Stone), Dorothy, Jennifer (Steve Detjen), Bill (Dana McCullam), three (3) grandchildren, four (4) step-grandchildren and one step great grandchild. Our family is particularly grateful that our sister, Dorothy has been able to be fully supportive and acting as both a friend and daughter to our mother in her later years. We are also grateful to the fine staff at the Mercer Island Covenant Shores community and to the staff at Overlake Hospital, all of whom exhibited warmth and skill. At Frans request there will be no services. She will be interred in the Memorial Garden of the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. Her family is forever grateful to her for her love and commitment to us, to our Dad, to her community and to all aspects of having a good life. At her request, she would be honored to have any tributes forwarded to the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church Foundation. under the direction of Sunset Hills , Bellevue, WA. |

Obituary: OBITUARY FOR REV. GERARD G. STECKLER, S.J. Fr. Gerard Steckler, SJ, died 5, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Infirmary, Los Gatos, CA. He was 87. An outstanding professor of history and a dedicated pastor, Fr. Steckler was noted for enticing his students to excel as well as nourishing and strengthening the faith life of many people. A man of direct words and comments in and out of the classroom, Fr. Steckler also knew how to reach those who were vulnerable and help move them to greater confidence in themselves. The eldest of five siblings, Gerard George Steckler was born on 17, 1927, in Minneapolis, MN, to George and Cecilia Steckler. The family soon moved westward through North Dakota and ultimately settled in Yakima, WA. Gerard graduated from Marquette High School there in 1944, and entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Sheridan, OR, in 1944. He followed the regular course of formation studies and teaching experience; in 1954 he was sent to Louvain, Belgium, for his theological studies. Fr. Steckler was ordained a priest on 10, 1957, in Louvain, Belgium. Showing great promise and desire for advanced studies, Fr. Steckler attended the University of Washington and completed a doctorate in history there in 1963. He embarked on a well received career teaching at Seattle University, Gonzaga University, Gannon (Erie, PA), and Thomas Aquinas (Santa Paula, CA). Sensing thirty years in the classroom was sufficient, Fr. Steckler shifted his energies to pastoral duties: first as a chaplain to the Benedictine and Franciscan Religious Communities on Shaw Island, WA; then to St. Joseph Church (Dime Box, TX); finally to St. Anthony Church (Waldport, OR) where he spent fifteen delightful years. Declining health brought him to the Regis Community (Spokane) in 2011; there he enjoyed the banter and prayer of his brother Jesuits, weekly games of bridge, and opining on matters of religion and culture. A final move to Los Gatos, CA, was joyfully accepted and accomplished just days before the Lord called him to heaven. He had looked forward to being closer to family and friends living on the west coast. Fr. Steckler was preceded in death by two siblings: Mel (Truda) and Marilyn (George) Neault. He is survived by his brother Bernie (Joyce) and his sister Joan (Jerry) Marsh. There are several nieces, nephews, and cousins as well. He will be deeply missed by his countless friends, former students, parishioners, and brother Jesuits of the Oregon Province. A rosary service will be held , 13, at 7:00pm in the Jesuit House Chapel on the Gonzaga University campus. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am, , 14, also in the Jesuit House Chapel. The burial will be at 1:30pm, , 14, at Mt. St. Michaels . Contributions in honor of Fr. Steckler may be sent to The Senior Fund, c/o The Oregon Province, Society of Jesus, P.O. Box 86010, Portland, OR 97286, or to the charity of the donors choice. |
