Obituary: G. Hobart Hobie Stebbins Jr. 3, 1922 - 19, 2010 Our Hero! Born in Jamaica Plains Massachusetts, Hobie grew up in Quincy, along with his older sister Dorothy and younger brother Bob. Summers spent in Duxbury Massachusetts, swimming in the surf and sailing with his brother, inspired his life long love of the water. When his father and family transferred from the Boston area to the Seattle, he stayed behind for college studies at MIT. Hobies collegiate experience was abbreviated when he was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served in the South Pacific as a navigator aboard a B-24 bomber. His war time experience matured him and provided him insights into life that he passed on to his sons and family. The merit of his service earned him an Air Medal. Upon returning from the war Hobie joined his father to work at Lake Union Drydock . His creative mind and intense work ethic were well suited to the challenges of this industry. Working side by side with his father and a dedicated crew of craftsmen, the shipyard grew and thrived. His generous nature and patient demeanor helped to inspire ambitious employees to grow and mature both personally and professionally. He retired from Lake Union Drydock in 1995. Returning stateside in 1946 Hobie met a bright and cheerful, brunette project scheduler, who worked with his father. what then would be considered a long courtship, in 1948 he and Jennie Stephens were married. spent their honeymoon at Timberline Lodge and so enjoyed the Lodge and their memories of the honeymoon, that they celebrated their 20th and 40th anniversaries at the Lodge as well. In 1951, they moved from their apartment in Seattle to the growing rural community of Bellevue (population 5,000 people). settled in a new development called Vuecrest and formed life long friendships with the other young families of the community. In 1953, Hobie was appointed and served a term on the Bellevue City Council. During his tenure the council crafted the citys first Master Plan and established early zoning for the city. He later volunteered to help in the schools and gladly accepted the challenge of serving with his wife Jennie as PTA Presidents at both Medina Elementary and Bellevue Junior High School. In 1965, Hobie was recognized by the East King Bar Association with the Liberty Bell Award for his service to the community. He was a member of Seattle Rotary #4 and working with the club, helped form the Dearborn Youth Job . Jennies passion for working with disabled toddlers at The Merrywood School soon became his passion as well. In the formative years of the school, they helped the organization dramatically expand services. The Merrywood School is now known as the Kindering . In 1956 and 1959, Jennie and Hobie were blessed with the arrival of their sons Hobie and John. His energies instantly shifted to nurturing their children. He and Jennie made sure that the kids were exposed to a variety of adventures, including but not limited to skiing, sailing, hiking, and cross country car trips. A patient loving man, he taught his children and their friends how to sail and then trusted them with his cherished sloop the Yahoo. He led hiking and skiing expeditions to introduce his children to the beauty of nature. When his children embraced these activities he was equally happy to have them take the lead and follow them. Upon his retirement, Hobie and his hiking buddy, Bob Gallup, explored the Cascades putting to shame the younger men who tried to keep up with their pace. He maintained his active lifestyle well into his eighties, running between 3 and 5 miles every day. When age began to direct the course of their lives, Hobie remained steadfast in his devotion to his wife. Working within the limitations of his own health, he lovingly cared for his cherished wife. Jennie passed on in 2007. The love and devotion they showed for each other is a model for the rest of us. Whatever challenges he faced he found a way to remain cheerful and share a smile. He will remain a beacon of light to his sons Hobie and John, daughters-in-law Jo Ann and Alice, and grandchildren Jack, Scott, Russell and Anna. Our family is grateful for the efforts of each of the loving caregivers, especially Olga, Cora and Marie, and the tireless devotion provided by Jo Ann to make Hobie and Jennies last years comfortable. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a donation to the Kindering , 16120 NE 8th Street, Bellevue, WA 98008 (telephone number 425-747-4004) will be the best way to honor Hobies memory. under the direction of Sunset Hills , Bellevue, WA. |
