Obituary: Russell LeRoy Stancil was born 21, 1927 in Vesta, WA, the sixth of seven children of Alfred and Orianna Stancil. A logger, hunter, fisherman, farmer, husband, father and neighbor, Russ enjoyed a long, active life before succumbing to a heart attack on 25, 2016. The Stancil family moved from Vesta to Grand Mound to Yelm by the time Russ was in the 5th grade. He loved hunting and fishing before developing a keen interest in football and baseball. His sophomore year, those interests conflicted when a deer hunting trip and war era tires delayed his return beyond the coach's patience. Russ earned a letter in deer hunting that year instead of football. He also excelled in baseball, a sport he played for several years beyond high school on Yelm town teams. He lamented the "one that got away", a high school game lost in the ninth inning after striking out 17 batters to lose the Pierce League championship. The day following high school graduation in 1945, Russ joined the Merchant Marines with two other classmates. In his two year stint, he visited a number of countries and earned the opportunity to steer a Liberty ship out of Tokyo harbor and also through the Panama Canal. He was proud when the government conferred veteran status in recognition of Merchant Marine service. Upon honorable discharge from the Merchant Marines, Russ returned to Yelm and joined his father and brothers Clarence and Wes in the family logging business. Logging proved dangerous and difficult. He lost his father in an accident and later the business, a consequence of bad luck and poor economic conditions. But he was born a logger and remained in the industry working 33 more years for Weyerhaeuser. He was a skilled faller and often used those talents to help neighbors who needed a tree safely removed from their yard and sometimes one that was already on the house. He valued his partners at Weyerhaeuser for their hard work, common sense, esprit de corps, and safe practices. These men remained his lifelong friends. In 1948, he married Marietta Taylor, known to friends, family, and co-workers alternately as Marietta, Amelia, or Midge. To Russ, she was often Mary or Amy, the girl he teased in high school for having too many freckles. had a daughter, Sharon, and a son, Dan. Family time included horses, camping, fishing, 4-H and sports activities, and car vacations to exotic locations featuring visits with relatives and exploration of some natural wonder or historic site. A memorable trip, and not necessarily in a good way, was a two week drive to Mississippi in without benefit of air conditioning. Travel in retirement became decidedly more comfortable with several RV trips to Alaska, cruises to Europe and the Caribbean, and flights to Hawaii. When travel slowed down, Russ spent more time locally hunting, fishing, and farming. He loved pheasant hunting and trained many good pointers over the years. He had regular fishing trips and particularly enjoyed fishing in Alaska where you catch "really big ones. He maintained a herd of beef cows and presided over the birth of all calves, even the ones that didn't come on schedule or had a rough entry into the world. He raised a good garden but wasn't a slave to weeding. He dispensed advice and provided help generously to neighbors and was a trusted source for information and solving problems. He never quite attained meteorologist status but most hay was put in the barn dry. With more than 40 years in Evergreen Valley, Russ and Midge considered their neighbors and friends part of their village, trading goods and services and watching out for each other. couldn't think of a better place to live. Russ was preceded in death by his parents, all siblings, and daughter, Sharon. He is survived by his one true love, Midge, and son, Dan (Helen).
