Obituary: Dale R. Smith, 78, longtime resident of Edgewood, Washington, passed away on Palm , 24th, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA. From complications of spiral cell sarcoma, cancer. He was born , 13th 1934 in Stanley, ND. His parents are: Bob (Robert) Smith and Dorothy (Gertrude) Williams. He is the only child of his parents and Dorothys first of four children. In 1943 when he was only 8 years old, he moved from North Dakota with his mother, stepfather: Ray Jarmin and his younger brothers: Raydarold (3 years old) and Verl Jarmin (18 months old) to the small, Northwest WA., town of Rockport. Rockport is now considered to be the base of the beautiful North Cascade scenic highway along the meandering and powerful Skagit River which is also known as eagle country. His little sister Delma Jarmin was born here just after the move. moved out here because his Grandpa Williams (and his brother) owned a railroad tie mill across the river and they put his step father, Ray, to work right away. Dale grew up having many wonderful adventures in the great outdoors including hunting and fishing. He was surrounded by lots of family and friends. had many common family pets and even some that are not so common including a bear cub and a civet cat (skunk family) which he tried to de-skunk with an electric soldering iron and didn do such a good job, as that little critter sprayed and stunk up the whole house! While Dales children were growing up they had a flying squirrel and a pet raccoon. Dale played football and ended up breaking his leg. In 1953 he graduated from Concrete High School in Concrete, WA. He then moved to Seattle and went to work for the Boeing as a union Machinist. He was in the Marine reserves while working for Boeing. In Seattle, he met and later married Cecilia Brown of Beaumont, CA. on , 17th 1958. He then left Boeing and chose to serve our country as a United States Marine stationed in El Tora, CA. He worked as a mechanic while in the service and even met Elvis Presley on one of their outings. moved back to Washington and their son Dennis was born , 22nd 1959 in Auburn, WA. Then they moved back to Concrete, WA. so that he could drive a logging truck. Their first daughter Connie was born , 10th 1961 in Mount Vernon, WA. Dale passed Cecilia on her way to the hospital while he was in his logging truck going the opposite direction. (We think he missed her birth) moved back to Auburn, and he took a job with Paccar. Sharon was born 20th 1963 in Auburn, WA. Karen was born May 10th 1965 also in Auburn, WA. When Paccar went on strike, he elected to continue working and began working at Clough Equipment in Seattle as he said, I have a family to support. When Clough then went on strike, he became gainfully employed by Kaiser Aluminum in Tacoma. He spent many years with Kaiser where he made many improvements and kept their plant up to par in good working order as well. He brought slugs (drippings/droppings or cut outs of aluminum) home to his kids. He and Cecilia divorced in 1972. He met and later married Ruth Campbell of Concrete, WA. in 1975. Their first son, Danny was born , 20th 1976 in Tacoma, WA. Donny was born May, 11th 1984 also in Tacoma, WA. He then went to work for Continental Lime where he worked enthusiastically until the day he retired. Dale retired as Plant Superintendent for Continental Lime in Tacoma, WA. He was responsible for keeping the whole place operating smoothly and efficiently. Over the years he has had many occupations. He was literally a jack of all trades. He worked doing welding, drafting, layout and lofting for Clough Equipment , Paccar and Boeing. He also drove a logging truck and was a mechanic while he served our country in the Marine Corps. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Raker of Tallahassee, FL. and her family. His son Dennis Smith of Lake Tapps, WA. Obituary: Ever generous with his time and expertise and unwavering in his commitment to excellence, Dale Elwood Smith, 87, died peacefully at his Lake Forest Park, WA, home on Feb. 27, 2013. As a professor of prosthodontics at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, Dr. Smith had a profound impact on his students and peers. At the same time, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who continued helping friends and family even late in life. He was born on Nov. 23, 1925, in Blain, PA, to Charles R. and Margaret A. (Ritter) Smith. His father, a high school principal, and his mother, a teacher and homemaker, also had two younger daughters. He was only 16 when his father died suddenly of a heart attack. Graduating from Blain High School in 1943 as valedictorian of his class, he was inducted into the U.S. Army later that year. He served as a military police officer in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. Soon after coming home, he married the love of his life, Rhobie Charlotte Stambaugh, in Blain on Christmas day in 1946. He attended Shippensburg State , Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry, where he graduated cum laude with his DDS degree in 1952. Later that year, he joined the U.S. Public Service (USPHS) as a dental intern in Staten Island, NY. There, he and Rhobie had the first and second of their four children, daughter Laurie and son Jerry. In 1954, the family moved to Indiana, PA, where he practiced general dentistry for two years and daughter Gretchen was born. Rejoining the Public Service in 1956, Dr. Smith and family moved to New Orleans, LA, where they welcomed daughter Jennifer. In New Orleans, Dr. Smith practiced prosthodontics and taught at Loyola University. The family came to Seattle in 1960, when Dr. Smith began a residency in prosthodontics at the USPHS Hospital on Beacon Hill. Two years later, he earned his MSD degree from the University of Washington (UW). Dr. Smith served at the USPHS Hospital for 20 years, receiving the Commendation Medal for Outstanding Service in the Commissioned Corps, attaining the rank of captain and retiring as its Dental Director. He held faculty appointments at the UW starting in 1960 and continuing through 1992. He was a full-time professor of prosthodontics from 1978 to 1988, serving as director of prosthodontics research and the graduate program, and a visiting professor at the University of Toronto in 1987. He retired in 1993 as a professor emeritus. Many of his former students credit him with setting their careers on the right path. In 2009, the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics honored Dr. Smith with its Fred Gulick Distinguished Life Member Award. He formed many longstanding friendships along the way. He loved fly fishing and golf and traveled far and wide in pursuit of big fish and challenging courses. He was also an ardent fan of baseball, football and basketball. Year in and year out, he cheered on the UW Huskies from the stands at Husky Stadium and Hec Edmundson Pavilion. In recent years, he became active in the 10th Mountain Associations Mount Rainier Chapter and edited the organizations newsletter, The Avalanche. He was a past president of the Pacific Coast Society, the Academy for Prosthodontics and the 10th Mountain Associations Rainier Chapter. He and Rhobie remained very much in love throughout their 61-year marriage. She died in 2008, and daughter Gretchen passed away in 2010. Survivors include three children and their spouses, Laurie Smith of Lake Forest Park, Jerry Smith and Sherry Wartelle of Redmond, Jennifer and Daniel Vradenburg of Issaquah; five grandchildren, Emily and Lindsey Smith of Redmond, Nicholas and Alison Vradenburg of Issaquah and Kimberly Newman of Bellevue; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for 11 am 23 at University Congregational United Church of Christ in Seattle, followed by a private family service on 25 at Tahoma National .
