Obituary: Alex O. Santillanes, a well-known community activist in Yakima , WA, died on 8th, at Cottage in the Meadows, after his fight with cancer. He was 73. Alex was born on 27, 1941 in Crowley, Colorado. His family migrated to Gonzales, CA in 1946. There, he attended local schools and graduated in 1960 from Gonzalez High School. high school, he worked at Yoder Brothers Nursery. There he met the future love of his life, Virginia Valdez. were married on 8th, 1964 in Salinas, California and soon after started their family. In 1977, Alex, as the patriarch of the family, decided to move his family to Yakima for a better life and future. Alex touched and saved the lives of many by working tirelessly to create a positive future for the youth throughout the Yakima region. His endeavors included: Gang outreach ministry for the Diocese of Yakima, OIC student guidance counselor, community organizer for Yakima Substance Abuse Coalition, and student retention specialist at A.C. Davis High School. His crowning jewel was establishing a chapter of Barrios Unidos in the Yakima Valley. The group collaborated with gang leaders to declare Barrios Unidos a neutral, safe zone for the youth and provide assistance to gang members who wanted to get Jumped Out (leave a gang). He mentored youth helping them return to school, set goals, and become self-motivated. The youth group he worked with was active in positive community events such as: fund raising, Cesar Chavez , Cinco de Mayo, Dia de los Muertos, basketball events, yard beautification, reading time, and volunteer services. Moreover, he provided parents with empowerment techniques to assist them in guiding their youth away from gangs. Alex received numerous awards and recognition for his community advocacy, specifically, organization of the annual Cesar Chavez celebration, an immigration march, Tri Valley Private Industry, Sweet Kreationz Car Club, Regional Task Force committees representing Pasco, Kennewick, North Franklin, Place and Walla Walla school districts. A devoted Catholic and ultimate family man, Alex planted roots and family values to establish a strong family foundation. He was very adventurous. He loved to fish, travel, camp, and do photography. His love for automobiles evolved around finding and restoring classic cars. His 1947 Cadillac was his pride and joy, which has been showcased in many car shows around the valley. He was a proud member of the Azteca Car Club chapter in Yakima. Surviving are his wife, Virginia; sons, Alejandro Jr, Maurice (Olivia), and Manuel (Margie); daughters, Monica (Gilbert), Sonya (Ernie), and Margie; Grandchildren, Alex III, Andrez, Monique (Chino), Dante , Manny, Joslyn, Anissa, Bianca, Tatiana, EJ, and Grace. Mother, Mary; sisters, Sally, Libby, Jane; brother, Joseph II. Alex is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Santillanes. Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. , 11th at Keith & Keith . A Rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. , 12th at Keith & Keith 9th Ave Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. , 13th at St. Paul Cathedral, in Yakima, followed by interment at Calvary . Services have been entrusted to Keith & Keith in Yakima. under the direction of Keith & Keith , Yakima, WA. |
