Obituary: We Remember Them At the rising of the sun and at its going down, We remember them. At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of Winter, We remember them. At the opening of buds and in the rebirth of Spring, We remember them. At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of Summer, We remember them. At the rustling of leaves and the beauty of Autumn, We remember them. At the beginning of the year and when it ends, We remember them. As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us, as we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, We remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, We remember them. When we have joys we yearn to share, We remember them. When we have decisions that are difficult to make, We remember them. When we have achievements that are based on theirs, We remember them. As long as we live, they too shall live, for they are a part of us, as we remember them. Author Unknown |

Obituary: Elmer Peter Sabolchy was born to Hungarian Immigrant parents, Alexander and Gisella on 26, 1922 in New Jersey. He was the second son. In the time of the great depression, he, at the age of 10, and his older brother would take turns escorting his ailing father as a night watchman and assist in turning the time keys. By the age of 11, Elmer had lost his father to illness. While the small family of Gisella, his older brother, Bill, and Elmer faced the depression, his mother and older brother stressed the importance of education. Elmer was a good student whose interest in the arts led him to painting and piano playing. As a teenager he went to New York and Philadelphia often to visit relatives and was strongly influenced by the cities structures and museums. In the Forties Elmer joined the Coast Guard where he was a medic. the war he went to school in Idaho for an Architectural degree thinking it would be a good way to stay in touch with the art he loved so much while at the same time enable him to make a living in order to support a family. Upon graduation from the University of Idaho he returned to New Jersey with a degree. His career developed slowly. He spent time with his brothers family and supported his nieces and nephew as their mother suffered illness. He became another parent to his nieces and nephews. When the situation improved he moved to Florida with his mother and further studied the design of the new emerging city of Miami and picked up the hobby of photography. He returned to New Jersey to establish his new independent office. In 1960 he married and continued his career as an independent architect. He brought his modern ideas to many places in New Jersey. He designed schools and homes and office buildings. His first son , Peter , was born. For years Elmer kept the bottle of Dr. Pepper that he drank in the waiting room waiting for him to be born. He enjoyed his new family; going on picnics and dancing at various family clubs with his wife and child and continuing to visit New York and Philadelphia for art, culture and architecture. In 1967 his second son, John was born. Elmer worked hard designing with integrity, using always the best materials and modern ideas. He branched out as developer and developed a high rise senior center, partnered in an industrial park and his last major developing job was a strip mall. He managed to paint part time. He began a venture as entrepreneur in a franchise with his first son and then was joined by both sons in the venture. the demands of the franchise grew excessive Elmer decided to sell the franchise. He then retired into state employment as a master architect reviewing plans submitted for integrity and sound structures. He again returned to support his mother in a new way. She was now in her hundreds and he, along with his brother and sister-in-law aided her with home care. a divorce, he resumed photography and art with a new passion. He joined his son, John, and Ian, his grandson in Washington while John continued with college after leaving the Air Force. Enjoying life as a grandfather, Elmer, himself returned to school to paint with others. He became a car racing enthusiast enjoying both NASCAR and Indy racing. His passion for art expanded to three dimensional forms: sculpting, carving, and Bonsai gardening. Ever the voracious reader he expanded his readings to include spiritual writings. He found moving to Washington was a refreshing return to the Northwest. He loved the nature walking, especially with his grandson. He loved Kite flying which he also shared with Ian. While on the nature walks the play of light on colors and forms fascinated Elmer and he was free in opening others to observe the wonder in nature in small ways. He studied these elements in city walks as well. He saw all things as they related to his new work. Elmer rarely gave credence to his limitations thru conversation. He was not very comfortable with articulating effusive emotions. However, he demonstrated love with his actions. He would attempt to choose the high road to peace when necessary. Elmer showed relentless patience and generosity in tutoring his nephew with calculus and statistics. He was bountiful in sharing his knowledge regarding painting techniques. Qualities as generosity and thoughtfulness are exemplified his actions as an Uncle who would show up at concerts for his nieces or to offer them rides to school on days laden with heavy rain despite his early morning work schedule. His desire to serve and help was so reliable. Generosity, kindness, patience were qualities he taught by living example. He never let an opportunity to please be left unmet; for example one time his daughter-in-laws wooden spoon broke while she was cooking. Rather than buy an ordinary spoon as replacement he choose to go to his workshop in the garage and carve a cooking spoon from a piece of wood from the garden. This is the real artist: the one who marries and peppers life with seeing all opportunities as an opportunity to create. Elmer Peter Sabolchy lived life as an example. He rarely preached and most often shared. His generous heart was an open channel for the love of Life. He sought more thru books, studying DaVinci, Michealangelo, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and later turned to metaphysical philosophy. He questioned everything, He shared so much wisdom yet true humility expressed itself through him, as he espoused, he new so little. Few people can say he had a critical tongue. He has left a legacy of love, generosity, kindness and encouragement and most importantly a standard in which to weigh a compassionate life. |
