Obituary: Marva Bonita Nadine Sabin, age 94, passed away peacefully, 8, 2013 at Providence Centralia Hospital in Centralia, WA.

Marva was born on 14, 1918 eleven miles north of Eckley, Colorado to Lynn and Lola Godsey. She attended school in a one room school house from first to eighth grade and had a total of 3 students in her class. She walked a mile and a half to school (in the snow, uphill, and both ways of course) and was allowed to ride her horse to school in the seventh and eighth grade. In order to attend Eckley High School, Marva stayed in town at a boarding house. She was required to cook her own meals and when she went home on weekends, she would gather food to take back to school. Due to her fathers health, the family moved to Washington in the middle of her junior year. Here, she attended Onalaska High School and graduated in 1936. high school, Marva attended Centralia Junior for one year.

While attending Onalaska High School, she met Willis Wilson Ray. The couple was married, on 31, 1937, by Pastor Paul Crooks at the Chehalis Presbyterian Church. the wedding, Marva moved in with Willis and his father where she continued to live. ran a dairy business called Rays Dairy which serviced Onalaska with milk. Marva was an active participant in the business, bottling milk and hauling hay in the summer. No dairy is complete without some cats and the Rays Dairy was no exception. Twenty-three cats lived on that dairy and they were given a bowl of fresh milk every day. For a cat, this is a good life.

On 22, 1939, Marva and Willis were blessed with a daughter, Patricia. were blessed again on 23, 1942 with a son, Douglas. While her children were growing up, they were able to make a trip to San Francisco, experience the blizzard in the winter of 1948-1949, and lived through the earthquake of 1949. Marva also started working at Mary McCranks Restaurant in 1954, where she worked for twenty-eight years.

Marvas first child was married on 12, 1959, at the Onalaska Presbyterian Church to Glenn Faires. On 22, 1961, Glenn and Pat made Marva and Willis grandparents for the first time. Marva flew to San Diego, California to see her granddaughter, Deborah and was later joined by other family members. On 18, 1965 Marvas second grandchild was born, a grandson, Scott. By this time Glenn and Pat had moved to Longview, Washington so no plane trip was necessary to see her grandson.

On 6, 1966 Marvas son, Douglas married Donna Smith at the Toledo Presbyterian Church. This wonderful occasion would be the last one that these family members would celebrate. On 21, 1967, Willis was killed in a car accident. Marva worked at Mary McCranks Restaurant and took care of the farm.

On 1, 1969, Marva was blessed with her third and grandchild, a granddaughter, Gina. During the summer of 1972, she took her eldest granddaughter and two nieces to Germany and in 1975 she went to the Holy Lands with Pastor Reed Zachary.

It was during the summer of 1978 that Marva started dating a man she had known for thirty years. His children had played with her children. We all knew him as James Sabin and they were married on 8, 1978. Through this union, Marva gained three children and seven grandchildren. The happy couple honeymooned on the Oregon Coast.

Jim convinced Marva to retire, they traveled the world and went places such as England, Ireland, Australia, Europe, Alaska, The East Coast, Panama Canal, The Orient, Germany, and many other places in the United States. formed many long lasting friendships during their travels. also enjoyed dancing and would go out with friends every . On 11, 2006 Jim passed away.

Marva was a long time member of the Onalaska Presbyterian Church. She was Clerk of Session for 30 years and was the longest standing member of the church.

Marva enjoyed gardening, knitting, and quilting and belonged to The Valley Garden Club of Onalaska, WA and Knitting Etc. of Onalaska, WA.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lynn & Lola Godsey, husband Willis Ray and husband Jim Sabin.

Marva is survived by 2 children: Patricia (Glenn) Faires of Longview, WA; Douglas Ray of Vancouver, WA; and 3 step children: Judy (Glenn) Castle of Long Beach, WA; Liz (Bob) Henderson of Rainier, OR; and James (Linda) Sabin of Onalaska, WA. 3 grandchildren: Deborah (Scott) Thompson of Longview, WA; Scott (Erin) Faires of Olympia, WA; Gina (Jim) Liles of Parker, CO; and 8 step grandchildren: Jenny Vent of Onalaska, WA; Ben (Selena) Sabin of Onalaska, WA; Sally (Chet) Womack of Centralia, WA; Lynita Newman of Chehalis, WA; Bobby Hedgers of Long Beach, WA; Danny Henderson of Sacramento, CA; Diana Henderson of San Diego, CA; and Dale Henderson of Olympia, WA. 11 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren.

Obituary: Mary was born on 6, 1920 in Jefferson City, Missouri. Marys father Charles Joyce and mother Myrtle Joyce lived in Jefferson City later moving to Kansas City, Missouri where Mary and her twin sister Elizabeth known as Liz or Betty grew up. Mary and Liz were identical twins that were difficult to distinguish in their early years. Mary and Liz were very close growing up and never lost the special bond that twins have. Being identical twins made life interesting at their Catholic school. Mary and Liz loved driving the nuns crazy with tricks like changing classes and answering for each other. The school finally separated them into different classes to cut down on their mischievous behavior.Mary met Theodore Sabelis while he was in training for flight school in Leavenworth. Teds favorite story was the night he met Mary she had no money so he had to pay her and her friends taxi fare home. He always said this should have alerted him to her spending. Mary and Liz played tricks on Ted too. When Ted came to pick Mary up for the officers ball he was greeted by a girl in casual clothes not ready for a formal dance. Ted was surprised to see Mary coming down the stair case in a beautiful gown. Ted and Mary were married on 26th 1943. completing Teds military service they moved to the Orting area.Teds career in the bulb industry grew quickly. He soon became the manager of the Puget Sound Bulb Exchange and along with manager his sales career also took off. Ted traveled ninety percent of the year and Mary stayed home raising two young daughters Karen and Joyce.Marys life was very busy. Ted and Mary purchased their first home on Wood Avenue in Sumner Washington where both Karen and Joyce started school. When Teds father passed away he brought his sister, Hermina and his mother to the states to live. Due to the increase in the family size and the horses he had acquired, Ted bought two houses on three acres on Alder Avenue. One house was for his family and the other for his sister and mother. Karen and Joyce had the privilege of growing up next to their Aunt Mien and Oma. felt very lucky to always have someone to play cards with and make cookies for them. Karen and Joyce both rode horses and Mary became very involved in 4H and the Pegasus Riding Club. Mary was a spunky woman, actually a woman before her time. She was one of the few women in that era to hold down a job and yet made the time to manage all the 4H projects along with the riding club, daffodil parade and all the other activities. Marys weekends often involved sleep overs for all the 4H and riding club members. In 1962 Mary and Ted moved to their farm in Buckley where they lived out the remainder of their lives. Starting in 1968 Ted worked his last years for Fred Gloeckner in New York. Mary stayed at home on the farm with her beloved Pooch, Madam Butterfly and all her horses and began her journey on developing a beautiful horse farm.
retiring from working at Rainer School as a secretary for the research department she went to work for Ted in his office for Pacific Bulb Inc. Along with helping Ted in the office she worked with her horses on the farm starting her breeding of race horses and later hunter and jumpers. Those of you that knew Mary were aware of how proud she was of the horses she raised. Some of which were winners at Longacres and others won top national honors with her granddaughter Nancy in equestrian events throughout the nation.Mary and Ted were very proud of their two daughters Karen and Joyce who became school teachers. Joyce later became a prominent sales rep for McGraw Hill. were also very proud of the success of their grandchildren, Nancy Green, Josh Nace and Jerod Nace. felt fortunate to see them graduate from college, marry, and have successful careers and great families. Family meant a lot to Ted and Mary. Mary is survived by two daughters Karen Green and Joyce Nace, three grandchildren, Nancy Green, Josh Nace, and Jerod Nace, their four great grandchildren Ben Nace, Isabella Nace, Dalton Free, Lauren Free and one baby that is on its way ______ Nace a arrival. In Marys last years of life she was very restricted because of her back pain. She often told the orthopedics and pain specialists that it was from all the fun she had in her younger years. She was very appreciative of all her friends that stopped by to visit. She also really looked forward to playing pinnacle with her friends.
Mary was thought of by many people as a strong woman with a lot of presence. She was spunky, kind and thoughtful. She loved visiting and would always give you her opinion. One of the first questions when you walked in the house was, Whats new? Mary and Ted left a legacy that will not be forgotten. Mary will be missed but not forgotten.
