Obituary: Philip Gordon Sharp, 70, of Ashland, Virginia, has gone to be with the Lord. On , 8, 2014, he died from complications with COPD and pulmonary fibrosis. By his side were his wife of 47 years, Janice Hurst Sharp; his daughter, Lara Sharp Finnie and her husband, Tony; his son, John Sharp; and his granddaughter, Alyssa. Philip was born on 5, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1945, his family moved to Northern Virginia where he lived for 55 years before retiring and residing in Bethany Beach, Delaware and Richmond, Virginia. Philip served in Vietnam as a Marine Corps Sergeant. He returned home in 1966, and his brother, Richard, introduced him to Janice Hurst. Philip and Janice married 10, 1966. Philip was a committed follower of Jesus Christ. He was a friend of Bill W. for 28 years. He selflessly counseled others struggling with addiction and difficult relationships. He also authored and taught a program he called 12 Steps to Jesus. He willingly shared his testimony with anyone who needed encouragement. Philip was fascinated with transportation. He had an extensive electric train collection. He and Janice took more than 30 cruises together. He pampered his cars inside and out. Many will remember Philip for his humor. He could make children giggle, pull a well-planned prank, and turn an ordinary conversation into a platform for abstract joking. Philip is survived by his wife, Janice; his daughter and son-in-law, Lara and Tony Finnie; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Alexandra Sharp. Pops will be missed by his grandchildren Paul, Alyssa, Nick, Jenna, Mara, Ashley, Ciara, Delana, Christi, and Henry. Philip was close to his only brother, Richard, who passed away earlier this summer. He also leaves behind his brothers family: Sherry Sharp, Donna Suro, Garnett, and their families. A memorial service will be held on , 12, 2014, at 2:00 in the afternoon at West End Presbyterian Church. The church is located at 9008 Quioccasin Rd., Richmond, VA. 23229. The Sharp family will have a private interment service with military honors at Quantico, Virginia in the near future. And in the end, Philip knew all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose. Obituary: On 7, 2014, Mary Ann Countiss Carden Sharp was peacefully called home to heaven. She was born to Eugene H. Countiss and Oma D. Countiss on 30, 1934 in Pound, Va. She was preceeded in death by her parents and former husband Robert C. Carden Jr, son in law Andy Hankins, and a step son Christopher Sharp. She is survived by her spouse, Robert Sharp, one brother Quillie Countiss (Opal) and her children; Diane J. Hankins, Debra Deane (Phillip), Robert Carden III (Pamela), Roger Carden (Meg); step-children, Patrick Sharp (Gerie), Mary Benner (Stephen), Kathleen Sharp, by her grandchildren; Robert Carden IV, William Carden, Coleman Carden, Rachael Deane (Gabe), Phillip Deane, Joseph Hankins, Jack Carden and Clint Carden; great-grandchildren, Raven, Norah and Grant. Mary graduated from Pound High School, and attended college at Radford University and the of William and Mary. She was employed as a Computer Analyst for the Federal Government. She is best known for her enthusiasm for life, love of art, cooking and gardening. She has many watercolor paintings that exhibit her fine sense of color and attention to detail. She loved the finer things of life and spent many vacations in such places as China, South America and Tahiti with her husband Bob Sharp. The family would like to especially thank the staff of the Gloucester House, Riverside Hospice and also Quillie and Opal Countiss for all their loving and compassionate care during Marys stay. The family will receive friends and guests on 10th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial 214 N. 6th Ave. Hopewell, VA 23860, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on 11th. Obituary: Louis H. Sharp, 77, founder, director, and coach for more than 40 years of the Competition Swim Clinic, died , 17, 2016 at his residence in Springfield, Virginia. Lous exceptional knowledge of physics and swim stroke mechanics, his work ethic of preparing a renowned strategy, and his love for youth and the sport resulted in the coveted programs success. As one swimmer wrote on Lous Facebook page, The values he instilled in me for swimming are life lessons that are still with me. Lou was born 20, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana. A natural athlete, he excelled in track, earning the title of City Champion in the 440-yard event at Thomas Carr Howe Community High School, a school record that stood for several years. He swam for the Ellenburger City Park Youth Program and the Indianapolis Athletic Club, where he was an All-American in his age group and an Indiana state record holder. As a USA Masters swimmer, he won the East Coast 50-yard freestyle championship at Princeton University, was fourth in the nation in the 100 backstroke, and fifth in the 200 backstroke. His co-ed 200 freestyle relay team, for which he swam the anchor leg and included the late Betty Brae, set a Masters American record. He attended Indiana University, where he was on the winning team in the Little 500 Cycling Race in 1958. He later graduated from Baylor University with an MS in Astrophysics. He worked five years as a contract design engineer for NASA Goddard Space Craft and two years as a project manager for the development of ALSEP meteor sensors at Union Carbide/NASA. He co-authored the computer software Swim Logic. He returned to the D.C. area where he retired as a department head after 21 years under Father Healy, SJ, and Charles Meng at Georgetown University. Not quite as exciting as the space program, Lou quipped in a 2014 interview. In the early 1970s, Lou coached at the Brookville Swim Club in Alexandria. He drew on his expertise as a swimmer and his physics knowledge to teach other swimmers the most effective way to power through water. He never stopped researching and studying better and more effective stroke mechanics. While at Brookville, Lou started the Northern Virginia Swim Team (NVST) and the Competition Swim Clinic (CSC), most of who participate in the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL). His NVST swimmers frequently swept most of the medals in USS swim meets. Eventually, he devoted himself exclusively to the CSC, where he felt his time was best utilized instructing the yearly 200-400 swimmers who sought his training. He understood that an excellent swimmer must first learn the strokes properly before building up speed, and was firmly opposed to superfluous lap training. Lou feasted on living. His interests included gardening, hunting, growing mushrooms, photography, nature, firearms, and teaching. His greatest joy was found in his friendships, of which there were many. He blessed others with acts of kindness and thoughtfulness, both large and small. He left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him, and his spirit will live on in the thousands of lives he touched. He will be deeply missed.
