Obituary: Amado Zosa Sembra (Sam) passed away in the comfort of his Norfolk home surrounded by family members and friends. He was born on 22, 1937 to Lucio and Maria Sembra in Mandaluyong City, Philippines. He joined the U.S. Navy at the U.S. Naval Station in Sangley Point, Philippines in 1961 and has served the U.S. Federal Government for 41 years. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer and a Navy er Counselor who served the Naval branch for 26 ½ years. As a Chief Navy Recruiter, he was known as "Mr. Go Navy" in Riverside, California. He attended to his sea duties aboard several oilers, amphibious, and transport ships: USS General Mitchell, USS Winston, ComLanShipron Nine, Beachmaster Unit Two, USS Edenton, USS Coronado, USS Waccamaw, and USS Caloosahatchee. His shore assignments included two naval shipyards in Boston and Norfolk. He worked with the Chief Naval Reserve Staff (New Orleans, Louisiana), was stationed at NAS Saufley Field (Pensacola, Florida), was the Recruiter-in-Charge in Riverside, California, and was the Command er Counselor for Commander Naval Base and Navy Family Services in Norfolk, Virginia. As a Vietnam veteran, he was awarded the National Defense, Vietnam Campaign, and Vietnam Service Medals for his service from 1964 to 1966. Upon retirement in 1989, he worked for Fitting Out Supply & Support Assistance (FOSSAC) as a Supply Technician for 14 years. He was an active member and past president of the Filipino-American Solidarity Group of Hampton Roads when it originated in 1984. He loved line dancing, playing Mahjong, fishing, taking his wife to the movies, and going on weekend outings with friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Aurora, and his children: Mary Grace and Larry Sowell (Gladewater, TX); Alex and Lorraine Sembra (Marietta, GA); and Kim and Stephen Halbrook (Virginia Beach, VA). He is blessed with grandchildren: Kari and Gary Sowell; Olivia Sembra; and Josiah and Charlotte Halbrook. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Remedios Claudio, Brigilda Manalo, and Isidora Childress. He is survived by his sisters, Juliana Santiago and Carmelita Sembra, who reside in the Philippines. Visitation will be held at Smith and Williams at 818 Norview Avenue, Norfolk, VA from 6-9 p.m. on , 4th. There will be a prayer service at 7:15 p.m. that evening. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on , 5th, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1803 Columbia Avenue, Norfolk, VA. Graveside service will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6309 E. Obituary: Helen Anna Selva, 87, formerly of Silver Spring, Maryland died peacefully on , 20, 2014 at the Fairfax in Fairfax, VA. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Edward Daniel Selva, her parents, George Henry Dakin and Laura Greene Dakin Bryant, and her sisters Doris Paugh and Joan Asbury. She is survived by her daughter, Regina McElroy and her husband Roger of Oakton, VA. Other survivors include many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children. Helen graduated in 1946 from Eastern High School in Washington, DC. Immediately upon graduation, she started her career with the Federal government, working first for the Veterans Administration, and then the Department of Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and Bureau of Aeronautics. In 1956 she resigned to become a full-time mother. She returned to the Federal government in 1979, working in the National Weather Service’s Executive Office until her retirement in 1993. Helen enjoyed all of her positions and created work families wherever she was located. A Washingtonian her entire life, Helen lived in Randolph Hills, Rockville, Maryland; Calverton, Silver Spring, Maryland; Riderwood Village, Beltsville, Maryland; The Gardens at Fair Oaks, Fairfax, Virginia; and Fairfax , Fairfax, Virginia. From 1953 to 1965, Helen was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Rockville, Maryland, and from 1966 to 2008, she was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. She volunteered her time and energy to the Catholic Church as well as organizations supporting children, including the Great Oaks in Beltsville, Maryland, and the Cedar Knoll Youth in Laurel, Maryland. Helen loved her family and many friends, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. She had great style (sometimes flamboyant), and loved to decorate. She was a talented potter, was passionate about dancing, and enjoyed entertaining and being entertained at dinner theaters. She had great fun playing bridge, something she learned to do after she retired. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on , 30, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 3700 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, Virginia. Immediately following the Mass, family and friends are invited to a reception, in honor of Helen, at the Army Navy Country Club, 3315 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, Virginia 22030. The internment, at Gate of Heaven in Silver Spring, Maryland, will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. |

Obituary: Murray Seltzer, born 5, 1931 in New York City, died on 21, 2015 in Annandale, Virginia. Murray grew up in Harlem, Washington, DC, and Richmond. He met the former Virginia Ellison while working at Neisners Department Store in Washington, DC. On his breaks from selling shoes, he would flirt with her over the doll counter where she would give demonstrations of the first walking doll. Murray and Ginny were married in 1951; a month later, Murray was drafted into the Army. He served for two years during the Korean War, primarily in Fairbanks, Alaska. his Army service, Murray worked in the shoe business as a salesman and store manager in DC and Alexandria. He decided to go to school at night, obtained his accounting degree and went to work for the federal government at Housing and Urban Development. Following his retirement from HUD, he joined his wife in running her in-home daycare business where he was fondly known to the kids as Mr. Mur. His favorite activity with the kids was teaching them how to parallel park the kiddie cars on the deck. Murray leaves a loving family, including his wife of 63 years, Ginny Seltzer; his daughters Debby Hester (Dave) of Manassas and Tammy Seltzer (Lynn Crabb) of DC; his son David Seltzer (Darlene) of Corvallis, Oregon; his grandsons Eric Hester (Amy) of Charlotte, NC, Avery and Liam; granddaughters Dana and Cassidy; great-grandchildren Emily, Abby and Owen.
