Obituary: Ruth Marguerite Rees Smith 1919 ~ 2010 Ruth Marguerite Rees Smith passed from this life on 7 at her home in Provo, Utah. She was born in Nephi, Utah on 28, 1919 to goodly parents: Thomas David and Florence Thompson Rees. She was the youngest of their five children. She came from a family who valued education and family ties. Her childhood was spent in Nephi and Salt Lake City, Utah, and Twin Falls, Idaho. When her father was called to preside over the LDS Australia Mission she was fifteen and began a life-long love of missionary work. She studied at the University of Sydney, returned to graduate from the University of Utah in Biology and Education, taught for a year at Irving Junior High in Salt Lake and then took a “school-teacher’s vacation†to Hawaii where she went to work for the Navy at Pearl Harbor. Her extended “vacation†was cut short when her father sent a telegraph in telling her it was time to return home. The year was 1941. She married her sweetheart J. Alvin Smith on Valentine’s Day in 1942 and moved to California where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft. Together they decided that he should enroll in Optometry School, but as he had been a business major at the University of Utah, he was missing some of the science prerequisites and was working full time. She sat in on his physics course and took notes. He did the homework and took the tests. were a great team. He passed away in Provo in May 2002. Marguerite and Alvin reared their nine children in Burbank, California and she enjoyed her many years there. She was active in the PTA, served as a Deputy Assessor, and was a licensed Realtor. She loved working with and serving the youth — as a dance instructor, roadshow director, YW Camp Director, seminary teacher and teacher. She was a ward and stake Relief Society president, a life-long visiting teacher, a temple ordinance worker in Los Angeles and later in Provo. She was a substitute teacher at area Junior and Senior High Schools. She loved the ocean and taught her children and grandchildren how to ride a BoogieBoard and explore the tide pools. She took advantage of many cultural opportunities and did volunteer ushering at the Philharmonic and Greek theaters. In a project that began as a fund raiser for the Los Angeles Temple and with her good friend, Fern Elm, she ran a Dance Cotillion for many years—teaching dance and social graces to the teen generation in the 50s. Her roadshows and stage productions with Fern were legendary and in Burbank Reunions 40 years later former participants would easily and enthusiastically recall those songs and experiences. The Smiths moved to Provo in 1991. Marguerite loved people and opened her home to many. She enjoyed her associations with area book groups, DUP camps, the Provo Literati and the Provo Literacy Project. She never rode on a plane without a Book of Mormon in her carry-on luggage. She was called to missionary service in Australia, as a stake missionary in California, and on a full-time mission in Hong Kong with Alvin. She is survived by her children Sydney (Noel) Reynolds of Orem, Rees (KayLynn) of Santa Clarita, CA, Kathleen (Robert) Eliason of Provo, Craig (Marilyn) of Sandy, Douglas (Suzanne) of Spokane,WA, Robert (Tammy) of Foothill Ranch, CA, Steven (Melanie) of Idaho Falls, ID, Florence (David) Knecht of Mission Viejo, CA, Daniel (Anne) of ville, UT; 56 grandchildren, 88 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Chad and Allison and Marguerite’s good friends at Alpine Hospice, especially Dana, Darlena, Genselvi, and Verna. services will be held at Pleasant View 5th Ward Chapel, at 1060 E. 2400 North in Provo on , 11, 2010 at 12:00 noon. Viewing at Walker Sanderson , 646 East 800 North in Orem from 6-8 pm at the church on from 10:45-11:45 am. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City . |
