Family suggest contributions through Black and Clark Mortuary. Born 10, 1947, Dallas, to Roy Lee [Sr] and Betty [Alford] Senters. Former member, Repertory Dance Theatre, University of Utah. Man, that was so long ago. I had just turned 21, I guess, because I met him one afternoon in the Sun Tavern. It was one of my first times there after becoming old enough to buy beer in a bar. I had been to the same bar previously when I was in high school, and high on acid at the time. But that was in about 1971. Or 1970. Back then it was a hippie bar. His name was Manzelle. I don remember if he actually spelled it with an E on the end. Its just too long ago for me to remember that or his last name. His last name was simple, something like Jones. He may have spelled it Manzell. He was originally raised in a small Texas town by his grandmother, but burst that cocoon and went to dance schools outside of TX and had become a star dancer for RDT. Thats partly why I was curious about whether RDT still existed. Maybe they have some pics of him. I would like to see those. If they do. Because I haven actually seen his face in more than 40 years. He died of a heroin overdose. I didn know much about heroin at the time. I did know he had another lover that he couldn quite get rid of, and that guy was a whimpering sort of sissy, and diminutive physically. I was also running around at the time with a jack Mormon who played football for BYU, and he didn like Manzell. Frankly he was coked up and didn like black people to begin with. His daddy was a bishop in SoCal. He disapproved of Manzell. exchanged words once. I do remember that. Anyhow . . . When I first met Manzell I was quite paranoid. I remember that afternoon that I walked all the way the Sun Tavern from my basement apt. in the Avenues in SLC, all the way to the bar, past the Mormon Temple. And it was a warm day in early summer. I had recently taken up smoking. I wanted to be cool in the whole situation of entering gay bars officially in SLC. But the first thing that happened was that I accosted by a drunken Indian Shoshone dwarf just outside the entrance to the bar. He tried to grab my cock and I ran inside. The main bar itself when you entered was mostly full, and the bar tender threatened the drunk Indian with a baseball bat he had somewhere behind the bar. The Indian fled and everyone at the bar laughed their asses off. I think I had about two lite beers at the bar (all beer in bars at that time was watered down) before Manzell entered the place. He was the only one in the place that embarrassed me more than the Indian had. I was coming out of the restroom where Id pissed out my beer, as he entered the place in full African regalia and robes. He was also taller than me, which was unusual. I was 6 ft. tall,and unused to looking up to talk to anyone. He took one look at me, and literally licked his chops. His tongue actually made a 360 degree circle around his lips. I had never seen anything like him either. Maybe in National Geographic. Some African dictator. Anyhow, we became quite close. But when he died, I really didn know exactly about the heroin. I should have. We were watching TV once and he said about this black singer that she was flying. And he wasn sexually dynamite. Often when we were together we just cuddled and slept. That was fine with me. I just felt love for him. I think he felt it was OK to talk to me about his growing up and all that stuff. We were friends. I never associated his lack sexual desire with heroin. But it all made sense after he overdosed. I remember Joe Redburn pushed the city police as regards the heroin trade in SLC after Manzell died. You can probably ask Joe about it, Stuart. There was some deadly heroin going around in SLC at the time. Joe knew Manzell. Joe was very fond of him. Manzell died, I just retreated from the whole gay scene for about year, and concentrated on my studies.
