Obituary: It is with heavy hearts we send this message to inform you that on 4, 2016, Joe Swofford, Sr. passed away peacefully while sleeping.

The body that served him so well for 84 years was still strong, but it could not overcome the dementia, strokes or seizures of recent times. While the mind had become very confused and the memory very selective, near the end he was always happy and eager to get back to work.

Joe will be remembered for an array of great accomplishments in his life. Through this business savvy hard work and common sense approach, Swofford electric Supply has been successful for 48 years. his honest, ethical treatment of customers, vendors, manufacturers and employees served him well as it served us all well.

Joe was a loving, caring, compassionate husband, father, grandfather and friend. This became obvious as he became the full time caregiver for the love of his life Gay Swofford. Through her battles with cancer and Alzheimer's, his last years were totally devoted to her care, which he did with a full and loving heart.

Our family's wish is that Joe rest in peace and that we can continue the legacy he so brilliantly started. Dad will surely be missed but never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family request's donations be made in the memory of:

Obituary: SWOFFORD

Martha Anne Swofford, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away , May 29, 2001, at the age of 93, at Air Force Village I in San Antonio, TX. Martha was born May 22, 1908 in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of Frank L. Martin and Martha M. Hall Martin. Her life on this earth can best be described as one of wondrous, challenging and distinctly unique events that forged a loving, kind, warm and courageous woman. Travel throughout the United States and many parts of the world was to become her trademark from a very early age. At the age of 3, her father, a Harvard University graduate and journalist for the Kansas City Star newspaper, moved the family to Columbia, MO. There, as a young professor, he assisted the University of Missouri in establishing the School of Journalism -Â- the worldÂs first. A few years later, father Martin again packed up the family and journeyed to Tokyo, Japan, for one year to help convert the Japan Advertiser from a Japanese to an English language newspaper - - the First English language in Japan. By the time the Martin family returned to the U.S., her mother, affectionately called ÂBopoÂ, would remark that, as a young child, Martha could speak Japanese better than English. Back in Columbia, MO, Martha continued to enjoy a happy life, growing from childhood to young womanhood. In 1926, Martha enrolled in the University of Missouri and joined the Pi Beta Phi sorority. This was also the year that the most pivotal event of their life occurred; she met the man she would ultimately marry and be devoted to for the rest of her life. That fellow, Ralph P. Swofford, Jr., was a second-year student at the University of MissouriÂs School of Engineering and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. To Martha, it was love at first sight. In the midst of their courtship, another critical event occurred that was to test the strength of their relationship. Thru the assistance of his father and then Senator James A. Reed of Missouri, Ralph received a coveted appointment to the United States Military Academy. By federal law, cadets cannot be married during their tenure at the academy, which presented quite a dilemma. Although a tough call, Ralph accepted the appointment. graduating from the Academy in , 1930, Ralph transferred to the fledgling U.S. Army Air Corps and by the summer of 1931 had earned his wings at Kelly Field, TX as it was then called. Now ensconced as a flight instructor at Randolph Field, TX, Ralph scooted up to Columbia, MO to marry his beloved Martha, on 14, 1931. Although both realized that life in the military is characterized by countless moves to heaven-knows-where, neither, of course, could know that the path of their life together, particularly thru RalphÂs hard work and diligence as career pilot, test pilot and command pilot, would ultimately result in his promotion to the rank of Air Force Lieutenant General - - and thus bring them into contact with some of the most interesting and influential people in the world, including two U.S. Presidents. In 1932, Martha and Ralph departed San Antonio and headed to the U.S. Panama Canal zone for a few years where her young pilot-husband sharpened the skill of his chosen profession. Three years later, in 1935, they again packed up and settled in at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH, for a long seven - year stint. Here, the family began to expand. In 1937, son Frank was born, followed in 1940 by son, Ralph III, a bit later, in 1942, daughter, Anne was welcomed into the family. With Europe now in the abyss of war by 1940, promotions now came rapidly to husband, Ralph. When Ralph now a full Colonel deployed to the European Theater of war in 1944, Martha packed up the family brood to live in Columbia, MO and like millions of other wives at the time, prayed for her husbandÂs safe return. In 1945, happily reunited, they moved to the U.S. Military Academy for a few years, where Ralph served as Chief of Staff to the Commandant of the Corps of Cadets, General Maxwell D. Taylor, who history notes, became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in later years. 1948 was another banner year for the Swoffords, when daughter Susan was added to the family in Arlington, VA. The Swofford clan was now complete. That same year, duty called again, sending Martha and Ralph, now a Brigadier General, to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH, for a seven - year stay. There, Martha focused her time and energy on raising Âher four lovable rascals to be ladies and gentlemen - Â- she succeeded admirably. Having received this second star while at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ralph and Martha spent 1956 to 1960 in the Washington D.C. area and Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, AL. In May, 1960, Martha and Ralph embarked on what they both considered  he happiest and most rewarding assignment of their livesÂ. Having been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, Ralph assumed command of NATO Air Forces, Southern Europe called NATO AFSOUTH headquartered in Naples, Italy. For Martha and Ralph, this was an idyllic time, living, working and associating with Air Force and governmental officials and their families from the U.S., Italian, Greek, Turkish and Iranian AFSOUTH member nations. It was also at this time that a rather small event occurred Â- but quite significant in another sense, for it reflected the essence of MarthaÂs and RalphÂs character. had a young Italian Air Force Sergeant, named Cosimo, assigned as their full time staff driver. Engaged to be married in the very near future, Cosimo, with great trepidation considering the rather prestigious position husband Ralph held, invited them to his wedding to be held in a small village southeast of Naples. Without hesitation, Martha and Ralph eagerly accepted, stating it would be an honor and a privilege to continued...
