Obituary: Swenson passed peacefully on to heaven , 9, 2015, in San Marcos, Texas. Barbara Strawn was born in Austin on 12, 1938, to Joseph Monroe Strawn and Bertie Maude Hartsell Strawn and, was the middle of three girls. She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Pickerill, son-in-law, Mike, and grandchildren Luke and Zoe; and by her son, Daryl Swenson, daughter-in-law, Stephanie, and grandchildren Antonia, Isaac, and Elena. is also survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Jodie and Hill Smith and Fran and Charlie Dumas. She is further survived by beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and countless other family and friends. Called by everyone, she grew up in Kyle, Texas and attended school there. graduating as valedictorian of Kyle High School, attended Southwest Texas State Teachers where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Alpha Chi national honor societies. She received her Bachelor of Science and Texas Teachers Certification in 1959, and taught 5th grade at Ridgetop Elementary School in Austin, Texas. In 1961, married Don Swenson and with him had two children, Laurie born in 1962, and Daryl born in 1966. While faithfully involved in everything her children did, she began work as the Director of the Child Development at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, establishing a kindergarten and preschool program and continuing her work there for over 10 years. wards, worked for the State of Texas for several years, as well as volunteering her time to multiple organizations. In 1994, divorced Don Swenson before returning to school for her graduate studies and received her Masters in Education in Counseling and Guidance in 1997. She received her License in Professional Counseling in 2000, and served in the Family Crisis in Bastrop as a youth counselor until she retired in 2007. Swenson devoted most of her life to loving, encouraging, and serving children. She also had a great love for music, always involved in singing and playing the bells in church choirs and teaching and leading childrens choirs, especially at Gethsemane Lutheran Church. She also sang and toured in the U.S. and abroad with the Sweet Adelines Ambassador Tour Chorus. also loved the outdoors and to travel, enjoying many trips from the local park to across the globe with family and friends, and always encouraging others to laugh and learn. Her lifelong devotion to family, church, and children had brought great joy to many lives and her life on this earth will be missed. Her family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Sodalis Memory of San Marcos and Heart to Heart Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of in her final months. Obituary: Arnold (Sonny) Swenson Jr. was born in Port Arthur, Texas on 14, 1930 to Arnold and Jessie Swenson. He was the oldest of 4 children, having two brothers and one sister. graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, Sonny served in reconnaissance in Berlin for the US Army. During one picture and information gathering mission, he and his group were captured and detained by the Russians. were released 36 hours later, making headline news back home. Upon his return to Port Arthur, he met and later married Patsy Childs, a local school teacher. From their wedding on Valentines Day in 1959 and for almost 57 years, she was the love of his life. were blessed with a daughter, Suzanne, a son, Pete, two grandchildren, Travis and Jennifer, and two great grandchildren, Abbey and Liam. Sonny was an active member of First Southern Methodist Church for most of his life. He, along with Patsy and his brother Jerry, owned and operated the family business Arnolds Auto Supply. cherished their customers and served the community until 1995 when they retired and closed Arnolds. Sonny loved history and enjoyed sharing stories about Port Arthur. The family created incredible memories during weekend stays at their beach cabin fishing, sailing, and relaxing. Sonny was an avid weight lifter, jogger, and cyclist. He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Patsy, daughter Suzanne, her husband Rob Harris, grandson Travis Myers, his wife Deb, and great grandchildren Abbey and Liam; son Pete, his wife Jeri-Lynn, and granddaughter Jennifer. Obituary: Agnes Amanda Bernstein Swenson departed this earth and passed into the arms of Jesus on , 10, 2014 at the fabulous age of 94. She was born to Herman and Emma Jentho Bernstein on 21, 1919 in Shackelford , Texas. Agnes was baptized and received her confirmation at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albany, Texas. While living at home during The Depression Era as one of nine children, she worked on the family farm and helped in caring for her younger siblings. In 1939, Agnes moved to Austin to embark upon the next phase of her life. It was there that she met her future husband, John Henry Swenson. The two were married at First English Lutheran Church on 11, 1941. attending Durham Business School, she worked for the Texas Comptrollers Department and Tracor before finally retiring from her position with the City of Austin in 1984. Agnes loved the Lord and never missed a day of her devotion and study of Gods word in the Bible. In 1954, she and her husband became charter members of the newly formed Redeemer Lutheran Church where she taught school for the next 25 years. She was also a member if the LWML. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Johnny in 1973, and additionally her brothers Louis, Tim and John. Her sisters Ruth, Lorena, Marie and Edna also preceded her in death, along with great-granddaughter Allison Swenson. She is survived by her daughters Janet and Ted Knippa, Pat and Mike Prather and her son Butch and Linda Swenson. She is also survived by grandchildren Renee and Martin DeCamp, Rhonda Blanton, Jon and Amy Prather, Mark and Heidi Prather, Brent and Greta Swenson, Brad and Julie Swenson, Kimberly and Rich Morris, Bryan and Michelle Swenson. She also lovingly leaves behind fourteen great grandchildren whom she adored. Additionally she is survived by her sister Martha Wetzel of Fullerton, California. A special thank you to all of the staff and caregivers of Buckner Villas as well as her Redeemer Family for the love, support, prayers and care given to our special Mother, Memo and Gigi. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Redeemer Lutheran Church for Lutheran Hour Ministry or Vision 2020 at 1500 Anderson Lane, Austin, Texas 78757. Agnes loved her family, her Church community, but most importantly her Lord and Savior with whom she now resides in His eternal home.
