Obituary: Streng, Evelyn Fiedler Evelyn Fiedler Streng was born on 11, 1919, in Comal , Texas. Her father, A.M. Fiedler, was the teacher for the one-room Watson School. Her mother, Alma Neffendorf Fiedler, was of a pioneer Fredericksburg family. (1845) Evelyn was baptized at Zion Lutheran in Fredericksburg, where her grandfather, Rev. Renatus Fiedler had been pastor for a while after his arrival from Germany in 1883. In 1927, the family moved to New Braunfels where her parents were instrumental in the beginnings of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Evelyns graduation from New Braunfels High School in 1936 (as valedictorian), the Fiedlers moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where her father, now a Lutheran pastor, had accepted a call to an inner city Black mission church, St. Philips, near Johns Hopkins Hospital. Evelyn enrolled at the Maryland State Teachers at Towson (now Towson University). her 1940 graduation from Towson (as highest ranking student) she accepted a summer teaching position in science education at the State Teachers in Radford, Virginia. During the regular school year she taught in the public elementary schools of Baltimore, and began graduate work at Johns Hopkins University. When Evelyns father received a call to return to Texas in 1943, she chose to live with them in San Marcos. She completed her M.A. degree at Southwest Texas State University. Evelyn joined the faculty at Texas Lutheran in the fall of 1946. During her 40 years of teaching, she taught chemistry and biology, physical science, geography, science education, and introductory geology. She was awarded a Doctor of Science Honoris Causa from Dana , Blair, Nebraska, in 1985. Evelyn married TLC Dean, Professor, and Pastor Adolph C. Streng on 1, 1949. She became the second mother to Adolph, Jr., Frederick, and Esther. Evelyn and Adolphs son Paul was born in 1952 after they moved from a campus residence to the home they built on Moore Street. Both Evelyn and Adolph were involved in church-wide boards and committees, and frequent speaking or preaching engagements throughout the state and beyond, as well as writing for church and science publications. Evelyn served as the vice-president for the American Lutheran Church Women (ALCW); she was a delegate for the Lutheran World Federations Consultation on Women in Bastad, Sweden, in 1969; she served on the Task Force for the Ordination of Women, at last approved by the American Lutheran Church in 1970. Ecumenical connections included ten years on the Board of the Texas Conference of Churches. Civic involvement included 10 years as a member of the Seguin Independent School District Board. She became a member of Seguin Shakespeare Club in 1950 and presented many programs for this social organization. Both Evelyn and husband Adolph promoted the establishment of a Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest. She was committed to appreciating diverse cultures and languages, and lived this out through working to learn Spanish as a late-life interest. Her daily prayer included praying in German and reading the Bible in Spanish. the death of both Fiedler parents in 1971, and the sudden death of Adolph in 1973 ,she devoted much time to the development of the Fiedler Memorial Museum and Rock Garden on the Texas Lutheran campus. She loved Gods creation and was always ready to collect another rock or photograph another geological formation. Evelyn traveled extensively and globally. She shared her substantial collection of global travel slides with many groups and University classes. Beginning in 1976, she was on the teaching staff at Holden Village in the North Cascades for 12 summers. She taught various undergraduate Texas and global interim travel seminars. retirement from TLU in 1988 she was a frequent Elderhostel teacher for Mo-Ranch at Hunt, Texas. She herself was a participant in some 30 Elderhostels across the U.S. and beyond. She escorted study trips for clergy and lay to Mexico City, and for women of the church to Katie Luther sites in Germany. Evelyn was involved in Emanuels Lutheran Church since her moving to Seguin. She was active in the womens groups (ALCW, WELCA circles) and was a choir member for many years. She taught an adult Bible class until age 90. In late 1999 she began regular weekly volunteering at an ecumenical food pantry, the Christian Cupboard. Evelyn down-sized to Eden Place, a senior apartment complex, in the summer of 2003. Still living near Texas Lutheran kept her connected to her beloved campus where she, Adolph Jr., Fred, and Esther had met their spouses and where she later saw two grand-daughters, Savannah and Kristine, meet their spouses and graduate, and where she had taught since 1946. In perspective, Evelyns life was filled with the gift of Gods grace! No major illness or surgery! She continued driving her car until 2012. She was a life-long inspiration to her family, students, friends, church and community. Is there a connecting theme for her life story? She would have liked to say it in a prayer hymn from early childhood that speaks of seeking to walk with God: So Nimm Denn Meine Haende O take my hand, dear Father, and lead Thou me, Till at my journeys ending I dwell with Thee. Alone I cannot wander one single day, So do Thou guide my footsteps on this lifes way. While so involved in the university, church and community, Evelyn was deeply committed to and involved with her family. She is survived by daughter Esther Staats and husband William; son Paul Collinson-Streng and wife Marsha; and daughter-in-law Clarie Streng Broste. Sons Adolph Streng Jr. and Frederick J. Streng preceded her in death. Grandchildren are: Elizabeth (Beth) Devoll and husband Kirk; Savannah Brunnemann and husband Randy; Susan Streng; Kristine Brzozowski and husband Allen; Stephen Staats and wife Michelle; Nathan Collinson-Streng and wife Michele; Aleisha Sager and husband John. Obituary: Chuck Streng was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1937 the first son and second child of Anna and Melber Streng. He always joked that he left Cincinnati as soon as he had bus fare.He joined the Air Force in 1956 for four years and began his adventurous life: Wyoming, Colorado, Alice Springs, Australia where he met his future wife. marrying in Adelaide in 1960 he moved his family to California in 1965 where he worked at Fairchild with semiconductors for two years. Recruited by Philco Ford he happily tracked satellites and managed tracking stations for the next 30 years: Guam, Australia, Guam, Santa Clara, Greenland, Seychelles, Vandenberg, Hawaii, and back to Vandenberg where he retired before we moved to our new home in Arroyo Grande.As Commodore of the Marianas Yacht Club he was honored with a Life Membership. Active in Scouting he spent time with his sons, helped others by volunteering in Consumer Mediation and Search and Rescue, and he enjoyed golfing with the RAMS.Chuck is survived by Pat, his wife of 52 years, three sons Steve, Andrew and Eric, two daughters-in-law Diann and Linda, grand-son David, two sisters, Barbara Ann (Ray), Marlene (Jerry) and brother David (Mary).Chuck?s family would like to thank all his friends who have offered food, thoughts, prayers, and condolences.
