Obituary: John Albert “Jack” Stolly Lt. Col. USAF Ret. 5th, 1926 – 4th, 2014 John (Jack) Stolly was born 5th, 1926 in Lima Ohio, the eldest son of Victor and Mary (Quinlan) Stolly and the first of five brothers. He was preceded in death by younger brothers James, Richard and Thomas, and by son Joseph. He is survived by wife Naomi, by brother Robert, son John and wife Gina, son Jerry, grandchildren Jason and wife Renae, Joey, Jerome, Taylor, Gena and husband Michael, great-grandchildren Jack, Nina, Diane and Garrett, numerous Stolly and Strickland family members, godchildren, and many, many family friends. Jack graduated from St. Rose High School in Lima in 1944 and then served in the Army Air Force as an Aviation Cadet in pilot training during WWII. The war ended before he completed training and he received an honorable discharge in , 1945. Jack then attended the University of Dayton for two years before re-entering pilot training with the USAF in 1948. He received his pilot wings and commission in , 1949 as part of graduating class 49-B. He married Naomi Strickland of Waverly, Ohio, at Lowery Air Force base in Denver, Colorado on 2nd, 1950. Jack served as a transport pilot and Air Force Transportation Officer until the end of the Korean War in 1953, then joined Lake Central Airlines and was instrumental in establishing scheduled service into Lima in 1954. While stationed on Johnston Island in the Pacific, son John was born in Honolulu in 1951, followed by sons Joseph in 1953 and Jerome in 1954 in Lima, Ohio. Later in 1954, Jack joined Davidson Enamel Products, Inc. of Lima, and was Engineering Department Manager and company pilot until 1963. During that time he also wrote a weekly aviation column, “Plane Talk”, for the Lima Citizen. In 1963, Jack moved his family to Dallas, Texas, where he accepted a position as Chief Engineer with the J. R. Bourland . In 1972 he transferred to Springfield, Ohio, where he was sales and construction manager for several companies over the following ten years. Jack & Naomi’s second son, Joseph, died suddenly from pneumonia in early 1973 in Texas, a family tragedy that was made bearable by Jack’s unwavering strength. In 1983 Jack and Naomi returned to Texas to be near their other two sons and families. Jack was construction manager for the Beaman Corp. until retirement in 1992. Jack had also maintained his status in the Air Force Reserve over the years and retired with the rank of Lt. Col. in 1986. In 1985 he organized “The Forty-Nine Bees”, a group of around 300 retired pilots that he had trained with in Pilot Training Class 49-B in the USAF in 1948 and 1949. He planned annual reunions around the country for the group and authored the group’s newsletter. He also held a Commercial Pilot License and was qualified in single- and multi-engine aircraft. In 1994, Jack founded the Janaco Research , and was actively engaged in consulting and engineering work in the construction industry. He also designed and hand-built a device of his own invention, a servo-motor device bought by model plane enthusiasts around the country. Jack was renowned for his model-building skills, designing scratch-built control-line model planes, and flying them for pleasure and in competition. Jack was a devoted husband to Naomi, and in 2000 they celebrated 50 years of marriage at the Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas, honored by the attendance of over 100 friends and family members from around the country. In later years, Jack gave indefatigable support to Naomi who suffers from dementia, and until of 2014 they continued to live in their home. Jack and Naomi were active members of St. Pius parish in Dallas for 30 years, where Naomi taught school classes for 20 years, and Jack served as usher. In 1997, Jack and Naomi became volunteers at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, and enjoyed years of service there. Jack was elected as president of the volunteer organization twice, in 2007 and 2008. The museum became a focal point for Jack’s love of aviation, and for many lasting friendships. An amazing father, Jack was always supportive of the paths his sons chose, and was much admired by everyone in his sons’ lives. As a grandfather, his influence is immeasurable– all of his grandchildren, blessed by the quantity and quality of time he spent with them, are acutely aware of the indelible traits that were instilled in them by “Grandpa”. Although he will be greatly missed, they carry a lifetime of memories, a sense of values and family, and were loved unconditionally. Jack enjoyed a long life, free of health issues until the past year, and was sustained during the recent decline of his health by his unwavering Catholic faith, the attention from family, and many wonderful devoted health-care professionals. According to his wishes for “no fuss” at the end of life, he requested cremation by Laurel Land . Pending memorial services for Jack in include a Mass in his honor to be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Dallas, internment at DFW National with full military honors, and a gathering and memorial Mass in Lima, Ohio, early in 2015. Father, grandfather, husband, brother, friend... Jack was an amazing man, perhaps the very definition of what comprised a member of what has been called the “Greatest Generation”. He will be deeply missed, but loved forever and always remembered. |
