Obituary: STEINFELDT
Cecilia Neuheisel Steinfeldt, the First Lady of Texas Art, left us on , May 17, 2013. Cecilia was born on May 24, 1915 in Montello, Wisconsin. She came to San Antonio with her family in 1923 and since then has been a dedicated Texan. Her talent for drawing and painting was evident at an early age and was encouraged by her parents. She began her art instruction as a child at the Witte Memorial Museum. In 1932, she graduated from high school during the depth of the Great Depression. While there was no money to go to college, Cecilia took advantage of an offer of free tuition and art supplies from the Mexican government to study art in Mexico City under Carlos Mérida. When she returned to San Antonio, she joined the Witte staff in 1936 as an art instructor for $3 a day. During this time, she was an active participant on the local art scene, exhibiting and winning several awards in local exhibitions. In 1936, she was chosen to exhibit in an exhibition of Texas Artists for the Texas State Centennial Fair. She was especially proud that the first painting she ever sold was to Marion Koogler McNay, which is still in the McNay Art Museums collection. In 1939, she married Eric Steinfeldt, son of the famed San Antonio musician John Steinfeldt. She wrote that she ceased to paint during World War II and delivered her son, Richard, on V- J Day when the doctors and nurses attention was more on celebrating than delivering babies. She returned to the Witte and accepted the position of Curator of History in 1960. Her mentor and dear friend, Curator of Art, Eleanor Onderdonk, encouraged Cecilia to study and preserve the history of art in Texas. Her appreciation for the talent and artistic expression of Eleanors family led to the seminal work Cecilia authored, The Onderdonks: A Family of Texas Painters, introducing a new generation of Texans to the great bluebonnet paintings of Julian Onderdonk. Along with husband Eric, she traveled the back roads of Texas peering into old barns and sheds to uncover Texas-made furniture that were often abandoned by families for more modern designs. Cecilia celebrated the unique beauty of Texas cabinetmaking and craftsmanship in her book and exhibit, Early Texas Furniture and Decorative Arts, helping to establish the desirability of the regional art of Texas by todays collectors. In the 1980s, Cecilia began strengthening the Witte Museums textile collection, actively adding to the museums historic clothing, quilts, and needlepoints. She helped to amass a renowned collection of Mexican needlepoint and highlighted the collection in her embroidery workbook, Patterns with Potential. She created a textile conservation lab within the Witte and established a volunteer group, the Witte Wonders, to work on the preservation of the collection. Cecilia went on to write five books including Art for Historys Sake and her last book, published at the age of 90, S. Seymour Thomas: A Texas Genius Rediscovered. She retired from the Witte Museum as Senior Curator at the age of 80 and took the title of Curator Emeritus as she continued to research, write and do exhibitions. Her last exhibition, The Art of the Steinfeldts, was held at the Witte Museum in 2006 and featured her own artwork and paintings by her husband, Eric. Along with her love of art and history, she loved her garden and was a friend to animals. She was preceded in death by her husband Eric and sister Dorothy. She is survived by her son Richard and his wife Jolleen; cousins, Joyce Chamberlin, Jerry Mason, Don Bailey; and special friend Louis Marshall. Viewing will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.on May 23, 2013 at Porter Loring on McCullough. SERVICE
