Obituary: Emily Florence (Scharfe) Stairs went home to be with the Lord in the evening of 7. She was in her bed in the care-home where she had been living for the past year, being attended by her care-giver, who was able to pray with her just before she died. She is survived by her husband, Glenn A. Stairs and her 5 sons, Timothy, Daniel, Jonathan, David and Philip.

Emily was born on 4, 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Baynesville, a small town in Baltimore county. Her parents were John Wilbert Lawrence Scharfe and Emily Jane (Barnes) Scharfe, and she was the youngest of their four children, with one sister and two brothers. Her dad was a tool and die maker, and her mother was a homemaker. She had a happy childhood, mainly playing with her brothers, since her sister left home and married by the time Emily started school. She learned to play all kinds of sports and really became a tomboy (and when she ended up having sons, she was thankful for her rough and tumble childhood)!

When she was 7 she began taking music lessons, but dropped out after 2 years. But one day she heard someone playing piano "evangelistic" style and she loved it, and got back into piano playing at the age of 13. By the time she was in high school she quit playing sports and had a new passion and ministry in life: To play music that honors the Lord. At the age of 14 she began ministry work, as a member of a Gospel team consisting of her family and another family. Together they traveled with the Pocket Testament League, visiting Civilian Conservation Corps camps and Army camps and prisons. Her brother played the trombone and the musical saw and together they all sang and played in churches all around the area, and even had their own radio program. Emily became the "Sweetheart" of the Gideons, and she played for their retreats. She was also the pianist for Youth For Christ events, playing for small groups and even for an auditorium full of 500 or more young people! She became the pianist for their local church, and taught School.

Emily was always a good student, but she struggled with Latin and decided to not take French. Math and Science were her best subjects, and she took as much as she could through her high school years. She also took typing, and after high school she entered a business college in 1940, learning some skills that were useful later in life, but she decided this was not what she wanted to do with her life. She took a job at a defense plant for the next 18 months. She wanted to join the Army but was dissuaded by her mother and instead, went off to Moody Bible Institute sensing the Lord’s leading toward ministry of some kind and utilizing money that had unexpectedly been left to her by a friend. She attended from 1943 – 1945 and was awarded a certificate in Bible and Music.

By the time she finished Moody she also wanted to pursue nursing, so she received her training at the Hospital for Women of Maryland School of from 1945-1948, becoming an R.N. as first in her class. She wanted to work with North American Indians, so she volunteered to go to an Indian reservation for her last 6 months of school, but instead, she was sent to a veteran’s hospital in Massachusetts as a member of the Cadet Corp. She said she always loved the way hospitals smelled. She also served as a Public nurse from 1949-1950, with opportunities to teach about hygiene and the care of children, and to work as a school nurse and in public health clinics.

Throughout her years of Moody, Nurses training, and other schooling, Emily remained actively involved in music ministry, and spent much of her spare time developing a music program for her home church, complete with choir, orchestra, special music, and a radio program.

Emily had wanted to become a missionary since childhood, and thought she would end up serving as a music missionary with HCJB. Meanwhile, Glenn Stairs, a young man from her church, had begun taking serious steps toward missionary service (and was beginning to be quite interested in Emily Scharfe). Glenn had been invited by Africa Inland Mission (AIM) to head up a Gospel Team that would travel across East Africa, and they recommended training with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL). When he returned from SIL, AIM canceled the Gospel Team's tour, and Glenn resigned from AIM and began considering Wycliffe.

Glenn applied to Wycliffe with plans to work in Peru. During Jungle Camp he got malaria, so Wycliffe decided that Mexico would be a better place for him to serve. He returned home, determined to convince Emily Scharfe that she should marry him and that they should serve in Mexico together. Emily had already decided that she would never marry, so when Glenn excitedly told her about Wycliffe, she said, "If you're so anxious, why don't you go?" His proposal (and call to Mexico) was simply, "You!" and Emily replied, "What?! No! I'll have to pray about that!" much prayer she realized this was God's will for her, and she became Mrs. Glenn Stairs on 4, 1950.

Emily did her first year of SIL studies at Norman, Oklahoma in 1951 and Glenn and Emily were accepted as members that same year. were first assigned to serve the Chicahuaxtla Triqui from 1953-1955 while Bob Longacre finished up his thesis, and Emily's nursing skills helped them gain acceptance among the people. When the Longacres returned, Glenn and Emily accepted an assignment with the Huaves, to continue work there begun by the Warkentins (who were off to begin SIL's work in Bolivia).

Hot and humid Huave country was a tough adjustment after continued...
