▰ Charlotte Louise Somers

Died June 19, … More Information
Charlotte Louise Somers, born April 24, 1913 peacefully entered eternal life with our Lord June 19, 2004 in San Antonio, Texas. Charlotte was 91. Obituary: Charlotte Louise Somers ended her lifelong devotion to family and friends on , 19, 2004. The first born of William and Hilda Huddleston and beloved granddaughter of Fred Hummert and Charlotte Wesenburg Hummert wished nothing in life other than to teach and care for those around her. She graduated from Harlandale High School in the class of 1931 as captain of the championship volleyball team and president of the home economics club. She was the first in the family to graduate from college completing a degree in education at Our Lady of the Lake University in 1935. Her career of service began as a country teacher in Natalia, Texas for the combined 5th-6th grade and school-wide P.E. program. Her seven years at Natalia earned her few monetary rewards after constant weekend trips to San Antonio stores to buy shoes and other gifts for her many barefoot, depression-era students. During the WWII years, she taught in the Harlandale school district while caring for her infant nephew. In 1947 she married a soldier returned from WWII, Richard Somers, and joined him in his last assignments in Ft. Lewis, Washington and Kyoto, Japan, where she continued to teach part-time. She returned to San Antonio in 1952 at the start of the Korean conflict with her daughter, Cheryl Somers Woodward, and son, Richard D. Somers, to await her soldierÂs homecoming. She returned to teaching full-time at Incarnate Word High School in 1954 and she remained a beloved fixture at the school for 25 years. Her retirement from teaching in 1979 did not end her service to others, but merely changed her status from employee to school volunteer and grandma. Aunt Sis loved, taught, and cared for countless children, creating an extended web of family who will all mourn her loss. The families of the Somers, Woodwards, Huddlestons, and Wieters provided three generations of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren for her to love and guide. She leaves her most precious grandchildren, Brandi Woodward Saraga, Emily Somers, Robyn Woodward, Chance Woodward, Alan Somers, and Ben Somers, with their memories of her love and guidance. She also leaves two small great-grandchildren, Sarah and Sydney Saraga, who will have to learn of her through the memories of their elders. Her husband, Richard Somers, brothers, Fred Huddleston and Tommy Huddleston, and sister, Betty Wieters preceded her in death. In addition to her two children and their families, she is also survived by her dearly loved younger brother ÂBillÂ, William Howell Huddleston, who remained her constant source of optimism and strength. She left this world knowing that he would be here for all of her family after her passing. She will be remembered and honored by her family, students, fellow teachers, friends, and neighbors, who were the lifelong beneficiaries of all her considerable energy, quiet wisdom and love. Memorials in her honor may be made to Incarnate Word High School scholarship fund at 210 829-3100 or on the website: http://www.incarnatewordhs.org/alumnae/annualfund.html.

Kenneth Samuel Solway, born February 12, 1940 passed from this world into the next February 18, 2017 in Texas. Kenneth was 77. Tags: #Gordon #Bennett #Florence #Morrey #Assumption #Windsor #Father #Fehr #Patricia #Louisiana #University #Houston #Director #Clinical #Internship #Texas #Institute #Mental #Karen #Aimee #Canadian #Isaac #Julia #California #Seger #Beefeater #Andy #Lenore #Earthman #Bissonnet #Bellaire #Jewish #Services #Catholic
Obituary: Kenneth Samuel Solway, 77, passed away on 18, 2017 in Houston, TX. Sam was born in Windsor, Ontario on 12, 1940 to Gertrude (Brass) Solway and Alex Solway, Jewish refugees from Russia who immigrated to Canada in the 1910's. His father, who owned a furniture store, passed away when Sam was 4 years old. He was raised by his mother with the help of his older siblings Gordon, Bennett, Florence and Morrey. Sam attended Assumption University in Windsor, where he received his bachelor's degree in political science. While in college he met Father Bob Fehr, who inspired him to pursue a career in psychology. It was also at Assumption that he met his wife, Patricia, whom he married in 1964. Sam and Patricia moved to Louisiana that year, where Sam obtained his Ph.D at Louisiana State University in clinical psychology. graduating in 1968, Sam and Patricia moved to Houston, where he served as the Director of the Clinical Psychology Internship Program at Texas Research Institute in Mental Sciences (TRIMS), mentoring young psychologists and making lifelong friends. Several years after arriving in Houston, Sam and Patricia had their two children, Karen and Aimee. He later transitioned to private practice, sharing office space with his wife who is a clinical psychologist as well. Sam was a proud Canadian who was motivated to get his U.S. citizenship after a surge of anti-immigrant sentiment in the 1990s. He never stopped trying to be a better citizen of the world.

Sam was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 1999, and beat the odds by surviving his illness and a recurrence. He lived to meet his two grandchildren, Isaac and Julia, whom he and Patricia visited in California as often as they could. Sam had a second recurrence of the lymphoma in late 2016, and succumbed to complications of his illness in 2017.

Sam was a mensch and a lifelong sports fan. His favorite sport was whatever happened to be on TV at the time. He loved spending time with his colleagues and friends, and many people fulfilled both those roles. He also enjoyed meeting new people, eating out, traveling with his wife, reading novels, working out at the Y, interrogating his daughters' friends about their love lives, wrestling with his grandchildren, reminiscing about the past, Bob Seger, the color red, ice water, and Beefeater gin with 4 olives - always four olives . His last wish was for his nurse to turn on the basketball game.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Patricia, two grateful children Karen (husband Andy) and Aimee, two hilarious grandchildren Isaac and Julia, a warm and witty brother Morrey and his wife Lenore, many beloved in-laws, and a host of kind-hearted nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on , 26, at Earthman Bellaire at 4525 Bissonnet St in Bellaire, TX. Donations in his memory can be made to Jewish Family Services at jfshouston.org or Catholic Charities at catholiccharities.org.

Obituary: Matthew (Matt) Gerald Soltis, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, public servant, Texas entrepreneur and philanthropist, died 22 at home at the age of 78 with his loving family by his side. Matt valiantly fought pancreatic cancer for nearly two years before being called home by God and will be remembered by all who knew him as a man of great spirituality, character, kindness, compassion and intellect. Matt was born into humble Catholic roots in a second-generation working class family in Norwalk, Connecticut, on 19th, 1936. A child of the Great Depression, Matt embodied the work ethic and family values of his generation, casting aside difficult circumstances and rising to the challenges of the day. graduating from Norwalk High School, Matt enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1954, and was stationed in south Georgia, upstate New York, St. Johns, Newfoundland, and Oxnard Air Force Base in California where he was a decorated member of the Air Force Military Police. It was in Southern California where Matt met the love of his life for the past 56 years, Deanna Jean Hall Soltis, a native of Los Angeles. The couple married in 1959 and settled in Southern California where they brought two children into this world. Matt took his rigorous military police training and enrolled in the Los Angeles Police Academy in 1959, where he impressed his superiors and landed coveted patrolman and investigator roles throughout the turbulent 1960s. While at times working several jobs to make ends meet, Matt also found time to study at night school at Los Angeles El Camino , where he excelled in criminology. Among Matts many accomplishments in Los Angeles was his founding of The Gardena Valley Youth Counseling Service, a non-profit organization dedicated to counseling at-risk youth in this diverse, working-class neighborhood. In 1969 he was recognized by then Governor Ronald Reagan for his leadership in the Gardena Junior Chamber of Commerce where he served as President. Later that year, Matt left the police force and began a 20-year corporate career with Atlantic Richfield Oil (ARCO) as a senior investigator. In this role, Matt moved his family to the Chicago area and finally to Dallas in 1976. While at ARCO, Matt was responsible for some of the companys largest oil field fraud and theft investigations, a career that would take him across the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Europe. He also played a major role in securing the new ARCO Chemical facility that opened in Plano, Texas, in the late 1970s.
retiring from ARCO in the late 1980s, Matt began a 20-year stint as an entrepreneur, founding Stony Chase Ranch, a cattle production company; Verification Inc., an environmental services company; and numerous real estate and consulting services. Matts artistic side was always on display throughout his life as well. An accomplished painter, writer and photographer, Matt had an unbridled love for the creative arts and the humanities. He will always be remembered as a kind-hearted soul who loved his fellow man and took extra pains to ensure that those less fortunate were always part of his family and friendship circle. Above all, Matt loved his family, his adopted state of Texas and the American Southwest. In his later years,
Matt spent a lot of free time traveling the country he loved so much with his family, exploring the majestic outdoors of Texas, New Mexico, the California Sierras, the Colorado Rockies and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, West Virginia and Georgia. A die-hard fan of his beloved Dallas Cowboys, Baylor Bears, Texas Longhorns, Auburn Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs, Matt found time to not only celebrate his family roots but honor them with his unyielding loyalty and love. Matt is survived by his brother Donald Soltis and wife Pansy, and a host of family and friends. He was blessed to have his wife of 56 years Deanna Soltis, daughter Kathy Mason and son-in-law Kevin Mason, son Stephen Soltis and daughter-in-law Stacy Soltis, grandchildren Ryan Dawson and his love Bailey Milliman, Annie Soltis, Chris Soltis, Dezerae Coursey and husband Shawn Coursey, Chris Mason and wife Laura Mason, great-grandchildren Chance Coursey, Chase Coursey, Makenna Mason, Noah Dawson and Davis Mason. The family would like to thank the health care providers of Baylor Carrollton, Life Hospitals of Dallas, Accel Rehabilitation Hospital, Accel of Willowbend and Altus Hospice. The beauty of their skills, compassion and care helped make a most difficult time so much easier. Thanks especially to dear Karen Meyer, RN from Altus who guided us through those last hours. Mass will be celebrated , 27, 2015 at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Carrollton, Texas.
