Obituary: Marvin A. Smith, Sr. passed away , 1, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 89. He was born on May 15, 1925 in Hatton, Arkansas to Lewis Leroy Smith and Zada Bernice White. A graduate of Aransas Pass High School, he served in the U.S. Army 41st Infantry Division during WWII. Smitty, as business associates knew him, was a man of integrity, both honest and dependable. He worked for United Gas (later Entex, then Point Energy) for 35 years. Art, as he was known to kin, was dedicated to his family. He was married to Fanna Lou Hunter for 67years. He loved being outdoors and working with his hands. He enjoyed fishing,camping, classic cars, and fixing just about anything. He is preceded in death by his wife, Fanna; his mother and father, Zada and Lewis; his brother, Claude Smith, and an infant daughter, Sherrie Ann Smith. He is survived his brother, Billy D. Smith; his sisters, Vera Smyth, Catherine Butler, and Patricia Baumann; his son, Marvin A. Smith, Jr.; his daughter, Donna Lynn Martin; and granddaughters Aleisha Johnson (husband Ryan), Karen Spence (husband David), and Natalie Mowles. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on , 12, at Ft. Sam Houston National in San Antonio, TX with a reception to follow at Bethany United Methodist Church, 4102 Eisenhauer Road, San Antonio, TX 78218. Memorial contributions can be made in Marvins name to Bethany United Methodist Church or to the non-profit/charity of your choice. |

Obituary: Marvin "Smitty" Smith passed away on Nov. 12, 2009, at a nursing home in Elgin. He was a 40-year resident of Harker Heights. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crawford-Bowers in Killeen. The service will be at 9:30 a.m. followed by burial at Central Texas State Veterans in Killeen at 11 a.m. He was born 10, 1928, in Charleston, S.C., to Thaddeus and Bessie Smith. The oldest of five children, he was raised by his grandparents in South Carolina until he was 9. He then moved to New York, where he was raised by his mother. In 1949, he joined the U.S. Army. He saw combat in World War II as well as the Korean War. On Jan. 15,1956, he married Katherine Beatrice David. To this union were born nine sons. He retired at Fort Hood in 1972, after 23 years of dedicated service. retirement, he sold barbecue at the old National Hall Club. He is a former member of the Harker Heights Planning and Zoning Commission. He was a past Commander at the VFW Post 3892 and the American Legion in Harker Heights. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bea, and two sons, John and Tim. He is survived by seven sons, Marvin Jr. (Mary), Raymond, Warren, Michael, Brian, Kenny (Seglinda), and Chris (Peggy); sister, Floretta Morris of Ohio; his uncles, Nathan Bennett of Charleston, S.C., and Albert Bennett of New York. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Crawford-Bowers in Killeen is in charge of arrangements. |
