Obituary: Jeanette Ernstrom Smith, born 16, 1930, in Houston, Texas, went home to be with our Lord on 26th. Jean fought a lengthy and courageous battle with both breast and lung cancer. She was surrounded by family at the time of her death. Jean was the only child of Mabel and Harry Ernstrom, who preceded her in death. Jean lived in Dallas most of her life, residing only briefly in Richmond, VA, and several other Texas cities. graduating from Highland Park High School, Jean studied at SMU before teaching for a number of years. She and her husband Van were married for 54 years, until he passed away in 2004. The couple raised their three daughters in Dallas, with all three of them graduating from the same high school as their parents. Jeans daughters will forever be indebted to her for teaching them about the importance of the Christian faith and regularly helping others in need. Jean spent the last six-and-a-half years of her life in Dallas, being closely cared for by her youngest daughter, Beth. Jean is survived by her three daughters, Lisa Nielsen, Beth Smith, and Lynn Davis Banks. Jean is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Obituary: Smith, Jean Knight, 84, departed peacefully from this life on 27, 2015, surrounded by her loving and devoted family. Jean and her twin sister, Joan, were born on 24, 1931, to Doris and George Knight, and grew up with an older brother, Roger Knight, in the city of Lansing, Michigan. Jean earned a BBA degree from Michigan State University. She moved to Dallas in 1951 where, while serving as a flight attendant for American Airlines, she met the true love of her life, Charles Robert (Dr. Bob) Smith, M.D., a pediatrician who was then serving in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon assigned to the Strategic Air Command. From that point forward, Jean and Dr. Bob were inseparable. eloped and were married in 1953, and started their family in 1954.
Jean and Dr. Bob were a loyal, caring couple devoted to their family and long-time residents of Highland Park where they nurtured and raised an active family of four daughters and a son in a vibrant neighborhood of countless friends and colleagues. Dr. Bob founded Doctors Hospital in 1957 that grew to a 300-bed acute care health facility and Doctors care in 1965, a 330-bed long-term care facility, each located in the White Rock area of Dallas. Jean served as vice chairman of the Board of Directors of Doctors Hospital from 1974 until 1984 and was a member of the Board of Directors of Doctors care from 1972 until 1995. She also actively supported the professional endeavors of Dr. Bob throughout this time when he continued his medical practice as a board-certified pediatrician from 1955 to 1971, while continuing to develop Doctors Hospital, where from 1959 to 1984 Dr. Bob served as its chief executive officer.
The epitome of grace and style, Jean was beautiful, both outwardly and inwardly. She was the heart and soul of her family, with deep affection, loyalty and tenderness. Her strong moral character and generosity made her someone to rely on for strength and support in difficult times. Her warm, loving presence will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all that knew and loved her dearly.
Jean and Dr. Bob consistently exhibited a history of giving selflessly of their time and resources for the benefit of others. touched the lives of many through the Dr. Bob and Jean Smith Foundation, with particular emphasis on providing special support to medical, educational, and arts and cultural endeavors within the DFW Metroplex communities, including, among others, UT Southwestern Medical in the areas of urology, neurology, and psychiatry, Baylor Medical , Baylor University of Medicine (for pediatric cancer), Childrens Medical of Dallas (for pediatric urology), Parkland Hospital, Southern Methodist University, Buckner International, the George W. Bush Presidential , Methodist Hospitals of Dallas Foundation (trauma and critical care center), Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, AT&T Performing Arts , Texas Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Following Dr. Bobs demise in 2006, Jean assumed the offices of chief executive officer and chairperson of the Dr. Bob and Jean Smith Foundation, which under her leadership has continued to support charitable causes of this nature, including the new Dr. Bob Smith presently under construction on the campus of SMU and currently slated for completion in late 2016. Jean also was a long-time member of Christ the King Catholic Church, and a former director of the Board of the Tate Lecture Series at SMU, a former member of the Junior League of Dallas, a former director of the Dallas Museum of Art, and a member of the Crystal Charity Ball and the Dallas Country Club. Jean enjoyed spending summers in Hawaii with Dr. Bob and family for over 20 years and the Pebble Beach/Monterrey Peninsula area, California, during the most recent 15 years.
A valued friend of many, a considerate, generous lady of dignity who always thought first of others, Jean was devoted to her family and her community. She is preceded in death by Dr. Bob, her beloved husband of 52 years; her daughter, Patricia A. Smith; her twin sister, Joan Knight Runciman; and her parents, Doris and George Knight. She is survived by her daughter, Sally Smith Mashburn and her husband, Waddell, of Dallas; her daughter, Suzanne Smith Welfelt, and her husband, Rick, of Dallas; her son, Scott Smith, of Dallas; her daughter, Marty Smith Kelley and her husband, Myles, of Dallas; her brother, Roger Knight, of Tacoma, Washington; her brother-in-law, Ron Runciman, D.O., of Santa Barbara, California; and six grandchildren: Whitney Wallace; Myles, Jr., Brooks, and Christiana Kelley; and Jonathan and Sam Welfelt; and a host of caring and devoted friends.
May the angels lead Jean, born to eternal life on 27, 2015, to the face of Christ in the paradise promised at her baptism where only joy and happiness are known for all eternity, and may perpetual light shine upon her.
The family expresses its appreciation and profound gratitude to Jeans tireless and loving caretakers, dearest Martha Chavarria, Trena Mack, LaShon Gilkey, Belinda Leffall and Gleneisha Rowden, for their attention to her every need.

Jean was born 25, 1933 to Erwin Haskel and Addie Hollar Jowers. Although she was an only child, her many cousins were really more like brothers and sisters to her. She was married to Curtis Weldon Smith for 58 years and they raised a family together that brought them much joy. She and her husband were longtime members of the First Baptist Church of Abilene. Jean had a very creative side to her. She was a floral designer in Austin, Midland, and upon returning to Abilene she was the floral designer and owner of Cottage Flower Shop in Abilene. Her family had many fond memories of the time spent at the shop. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority since 1973, where she held a Masters level and served in previous Corresponding Secretary and Beta Sigma Phi City Council Representative positions. Jean was once her chapters Woman of the Year and Sweetheart. Her favorite pastimes were being involved with her grandkids and great-grandchildren. She had an eye for photography and many of the pictures she took she engaged from the level of the children. Her love of nature and science was shared with her family with trips accompanied to the zoo and science museums. She loved to share the world with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Stephen Frost Smith and wife Kim of Houston, TX; two daughters, Rae Anne Smith Ratliff of Lubbock, TX, Cheri Dee Mega and husband Brian of Arlington, TX; grandchildren, Stephen Charles Ratliff, Kristopher Frost Smith, Curtis Lawrence Mega, and Kaitlin Emily Smith; and great-grandchildren, Madilyn Faith Ratliff and Connor Curtis Ratliff.

Obituary: Jean Avery Barber Smith passed away peacefully at her home on her 91st birthday, 6, 2013. Born on 6, 1922, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, Jean was an Army brat, the daughter of Col. Frank Exley Barber and Doris Avery Barber, who traveled extensively with her family in her youth. She lived for three years at Ft. Clayton, Panama, where she had many adventures playing with tarantulas, swimming in shark-infested waters, dodging poisonous snakes and exploring the jungle on her Panamanian pony, Laddie. On one voyage returning to the U.S. on leave, she and her parents were caught in the path of a hurricane and blown hundreds of miles off course. the family returned to the US, Jean attended Pomona in Claremont, CA and then the Univ. of Texas at Austin, completing 2 years of college. While living in Austin, Jean met her beloved husband, architect Harvey P. Smith, Jr., in San Antonio, Texas, on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend of their grandmothers. Jean and Harvey married in Orlando, FL, on Aug. 22, 1942, where Mr. Smith, a lieutenant in the Air Force, was stationed. the war, Jean and Harvey made their home in San Antonio where Harvey joined his fathers architectural firm. Jean settled down to creating a loving and carefully-run home and raising the couples three daughters. Jean also served in a number of civic and charitable organizations, including the Junior League of SA and the Battle of Flowers Assn. Jeans greatest love was for her church--First Presbyterian--where she was an active and devoted member for 64 years, serving as a deacon, circle member, church Godmother, President of the Women of the Church and in many other capacities. Jean was blessed with many talents: In her youth she was an avid horseback rider, golfer and camper. She was also an accomplished letter writer, needlewoman, pianist, clear-headed organizer, and diligent student of anthropology and the Bible. Her life was characterized by loyalty, courage, generosity, patience and service to others. She had the rare ability to be a compassionate listener, and never would she reveal a confidence. Above all, was love - for her friends, her family and her God. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Col. Frank Exley Barber and Doris Avery Barber; her husband of 51 years, Harvey Partridge Smith, Jr., and her daughter, Rebecca Jo Patton. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Smith Warren and husband, Richard; daughter, Lizbeth Smith-Leach and husband, Ray Leach; son-in-law, Frank Patton and wife, Jacque; granddaughter Amy Grammer and husband, Andrew; granddaughter, Kate Olivarez, and husband Kevin; granddaughter, Rebecca Leach; grandson, Christopher Leach; cousin Lucie Chapman Rathert; great grandchildren, Abigail and Caleb Grammer, Claire, Daniel and Jolee Olivarez; and, numerous dear friends. To her many devoted friends who cheered her spirits with phone calls, visits, food, flowers and hundreds of cards, her family expresses deep gratitude. Her family is especially grateful to Jeans devoted housekeeper of 30 years, Rosa Navarro, who in the last three years became her caregiver; and to Rosas daughter, Rosie Esparza, who also assisted Jean.
