Obituary: Ella Faber Berry was born 24 1918 in the Hyde Park Section of Tampa, Florida, to Earl Davis and Barbara Cox Berry, the second of 5 children. She enjoyed an Idyllic girlhood, attending elementary school at "Old Gorrie School" now a historical site, just a block from her home, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and Plant High School in Palma Ceia, all the while with her best friends and neighbors. Her best friend, Virginia, who now resides in Pierson, FL continues to "Stay-in- Touch". Their escapades in riding the street car to the movies and then walking home to save their nickel so they could buy donuts, 3 for a nickel, are the kind of stories from which movies are made. Ella was a good student and was inducted into the National Honor Society. One of her favorite needling modes was to tell Mike and her younger sister Dora that "We e all going to wear our National Honor Society Pins today". She graduated from the University of Tampa in 1940 with a degree in business administration and was named the "Most Attractive" by classmates. She was employed as a case worker by the Florida State Welfare Board and kept books for her father in his grocery business. She met her husband, Mike at a social function cosponsored by her sorority at the Tampa Yacht Club in 1942 and continued to date him when his training schedule would permit until their marriage on 30 1943. She resigned her position at the State Welfare Board so that she could be near Mike during his various moves while he was taking commando training up and down the West Coast of Florida. She then went to Long Island, New York while Mikes unit was going through final equipment "Shake Down" prior to deployment. She and Mike did New York City every weekend Mike could get free, they stayed at the Waldorf, The Park Avenue, went to the Stork Club, numerous theaters, pro football games and all was either free or at greatly reduced cost courtesy of the USO and the generosity of the great people of New York City. In later years Ella would take offense if some one spoke of New Yorkers as being unfriendly. In late ,43 with Mike gone, she returned to Tampa and accepted a position as a case worker with the American Red Cross. She found the job to her liking and interesting because of the close connection between the dependents she was working with and their sons and husbands overseas. She could relate closely to their problems. Mikes return in 45 she became an expert on making unannounced moves and started out by going to Randolph and finding that this was just a stop on the way to Goodfellow, back to Randolph, then to Turner, then to Selfridge, then to Bergstrom, to Brooks, and on to Elmendorf, all in a period of 3 years. During this time she had a son, Tim, in 1946, a house and furniture at Turner which it took forever to sell, and many lifelong friends at each and every stop along the way. Ella was a dedicated military wife. Her daughter Nancy was born May52 shortly after the return from Alaska and she became the best of all mothers. She monitored their progress in school and actually had classes at home after school for not only Tim and Nancy but brought the neighborhood kids in as well and made a kind of game of it with snacks so the children looked forward to the classes. She was a substitute teacher but never accepted a full time job so she would be free to monitor the children. Alaska was her only overseas tour because she wanted to keep the children in the same school and Mike took the "Short Tour" options. Children and husband always took priority over any other considerations. She continued her education taking night classes in education and other subjects of interest. She and Mike planned on becoming school teachers upon retirement but changed their minds when the differences in salary were considered. Ella loved people and was active in community affairs and fund raising activities for various charities. She was an active member in the American Association of University Women and served as Treasurer of the San Antonio Chapter for several years, was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution as long as she was able to participate, Magna Charta Dames & Barons, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, the Jamestown Society, The Southern Dames, The Retired Teachers Association, Republican Business Women, The San Antonio Garden Club, Newcomers and numerous Bridge Groups. She was preceded in death by her mother Mom and fatherPop; two brothers, James Davis Berry Jim and Charles Vardiman Berry Buddy. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Mike; one son, Col. Dr Tim Smith and wife Dr. Carol Smith, Wadmalaw Island, SC; a daughter, Nancy, AF Village II; two sisters, Dora Ann Conrad, Red Bluff, CA, and Mary Earl Rumph, Tampa, FL; one grandson, Steve, University of Virginia Medical School; and one granddaughter, Katy, Texas Southwestern Medical University at Dallas, TX. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and while the children were young served as a School Teacher. In lieu of flowers she wishes that donations be made to the Freedom House at AF Village II or a charity of your choice. Our time together on Earth has come to an end, But we will continue to walk together in our "Garden of Memories" that we have grown over many miles and many years until we are reunited for ever. |
