Louis had a long and distinguished career serving his country, first in the Army Air Corp, Europe where he guided his crew as a navigator during WWII. Returning to Beaumont to marry Lee, he was recalled to duty in the United States Air Force to serve during the Korean War. He later would pilot refueling aircraft in Japan and El Paso, Texas. Education was a significant component of Louis life. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Western University in El Paso, Texas, and masters and doctorate degrees in Education from the University of Southern California. Living again in Wiesbaden, Germany, Louis successfully grew USCs programs from 1970-1978. He again answered a call to serve the Air Force, this time as a civilian, returning to direct the Education and Training component of Air Force Systems Command, at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. He later relocated to Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, where he established a systems acquisition school. The better part of the 1990s was spent in retirement, with Louis now serving as Lees assistant in her craft business. travelled frequently to visit friends and family. Two years after Lees death in 1999, Louis left San Antonio to be closer to his grandchildren, splitting his time between Tallahassee and Amherst. Eventually living full time in Amherst, he was an active volunteer in the Amherst school system, tutoring, reading, serving on committees and always, on Veterans Day, sharing his military experiences with students. For his contributions to Amherst schools, he was honored with a Golden Apple award. Obituary: Dr. Forrest M. Smith, Jr., known to most as ÂFrostyÂ, flew to heaven early morning after a full and fruitful life. Born in El Paso on May 14, 1927, Frosty was born to Forrest and Harriet Smith and was big brother, ÂBuddy to Paul Bim and David Davo. He attended the University of Texas where he began lifelong friendships as a Phi Gam. a stint in the Navy during World War II, he attended Pennsylvania Medical School where he met and married Betty Gant. enjoyed 52 wonderful years together and raised four children, Forrest III, Madison, Alexine and Harriet. He gained four more children as each married; Cathy Ann, Cathy O., Peter and Mike. We are so grateful to have had Dad as our dad. To his 11 grandchildren, he was ÂPoppyÂ. Whitney, Hallie, Drew, Forrest IV, Peter, Jr., Sydney, Sam, Julia, Claire, Emma and Michael; he filled them with kindness and encouragement. Frosty practiced his own, very special brand of pediatrics for 48 years. Those of you who went to ÂDr. Frosty know what we mean. In a sense, his care will continue through Dr. SmithÂs Diaper Ointment, a venture he helped found with faithful, long time colleagues. Above all, Frosty loved God. With each passing year, he seemed to grow younger in his spirit and closer to the Lord. He regarded each person with acceptance, warmth and encouragement. No one was a stranger to Frosty for long. His favorite greeting was an Âabraso otherwise know as a hug. Frosty Smith was a lover in the best sense of the word. We will miss him but, will also celebrate a life fully lived. Well done, good and faithful servant. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Frosty Smith Memorial Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 404 North Alamo, San Antonio, Texas, 78205 or the charity of your choice. |
