Obituary: Marie Slaton, who was born on 2, 1915 and who just celebrated her 100th birthday, passed away on 4, 2016. She was a dear, sweet friend who was loved by all who knew her and admired by those whose lives she touched. Marie was in the original Ice Follies, which brought her to Dallas. Her first skating engagement in Texas was at the Adolphus Hotel where she met and soon after married Dr. Jack Rushing, the founder of Gaston Episcopal Hospital, which was one of the original hospitals in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The couple had a home in Acapulco, Mexico and together they founded Friends of Acapulco, a home for indigent children, which is still in existence after approximately 55 years. Marie supported many charities, included in which were various humanity, medical and animal causes. Marie was a loving wife and a wonderful friend. Among her numerous accomplishments she was a cancer survivor, a Red Cross volunteer as well as a pilot. She was a member of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution and she and Dr. Rushing were members of the Southwestern Region of the Civil Air Patrol, Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. the death of Dr. Rushing she married James Slaton and continued to be involved in her many charities for the rest of her life. Marie was a joy to be around, with a zest for life that remained with her until the end. She loved to play backgammon, enjoyed fishing and had a great sense of humor. She was a lover of mankind and an inspiration for those who loved her and who will cherish the memories she left behind. She is survived by three cousins, Bill, Abbott and Janet King, three nieces, Marie Abbott Porter, Marcia Abbott Gedney and Michelle Abbott Himmerich, and Susan Glazier, who was a stepgranddaughter. Her estate will be donated to Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota in memory of her grandfather, Dr. Amos Abbott, who in 1882 was one of the hospitals founders. |

Obituary: John O. Jack Slaton was born 17, 1933 and passed away on 19, 2013. Jacks life was influenced by many people-- his birth parents, John Oscar and Georgia Ann Slaton; the parents that raised him, Wilbur and Myrtle Slaton; his uncle Virgil and Fairy Olmstead; and his aunt Mattie Stone. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nina Slaton; his sister, Ann French; his three children, Debra Houts, John Slaton, and Carol Hill; his grandchildren, John and Christopher Slaton; and his two great grandchildren, Tris-ton and Luke Slaton. Jack was excellent at making acquaintances and there was not a person (or rock) he couldn make friends with. Whether at Lubbock Gem and Mineral Society, church, the Lubbock Stroke Club, or just out to dinner, Jacks loving smile and warm stories lead his way into many hearts. Jack owned Slaton Geological for 39 years and was a self proclaimed pebble pusher. His passion for geology and the outdoors took him on many adventures. He traveled frequently all over Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Oklahoma for work and vacation. Many of the family vacations were to camp, fish, and rock hunt. Jack also liked to hunt and pan for gold. He was fluent in Spanish, which few people knew, and even after many (many) years of not using it, he was still able to speak it as though he spoke Spanish every day. He was a man of a hidden brilliance that many would hope to acquire, with a memory like a vault, a heart like the sun, and a spirit as ornery as a fox. He is loved and will be dearly missed. Obituary: George Slaton, 83, born 27, 1930 in St Jo, Texas passed away 26, 2014 in Round Rock, Texas. Raised in the rural town of St Jo, Texas, George excelled in school and high school sports where he led his high school football team as quarterback. Graduating at the young age of 17, George began his career with Southwestern Bell as a janitor in Borger, Texas. Although shy and quiet at the time, his industrious, eager and dedicated work ethic quickly began to move him into new positions within the company. George was responsible for building the long distance dialing system and microwave system in the Texas Panhandle area in and around Borger. With a promotion to management, George transferred to Texas City and Abilene where he held positions before transferring to Austin, Texas in 1970. Once in Austin, he led the phone line installation and maintenance at the LBJ Ranch for President Johnson. Many of the years of his career in Austin he managed the Test , before his final department assignment where among other accomplishments, George managed the introduction, installation and maintenance of T1 lines into the Austin area until his retirement in 1986. George is a lifetime member of Southwestern Bell Pioneers and enjoyed meeting with old friends as often as possible. leaving Southwestern Bell, George and his wife Elnora owned two I Can Believe Its Yogurt! franchises in Austin, Texas. Although once shy and quiet as a young man, George quickly became the guy who never met a stranger. His witty sense of humor served him well; he was a true, loyal friend who would do anything for a friend. A jack of trades and a talented craftsman, George could do just about anything he put his mind to. He enjoyed working in his yard, his workshop building furniture his daughter designed and on the family ranch in Elgin where he forged lifelong friendships with Duke and Mary Ducharme and later Clyde Mann. Georges annual elk hunting trips and fishing trips with his nephew Tim Atkins brought him back to his love for the outdoors, horseback riding and camping. A doting grandfather, George was an active supporter of his granddaughters and their endeavors and took great joy in spending time with them. George is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elnora Slaton, parents, Brittain and Eugenia Slaton, sister, Betty Wingo and niece, Gwynneth Roper. He is survived by his children, Sharon Brittain, Mike Slaton, Philip Slaton, and Treasa Telle, brother, Thad Slaton, grandchildren, Jay and Damon Held and Ilissa and Lauril Telle, four great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews along with their families. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Davids Round Rock ICU for all of their excellent care and compassion. A time of visitation will be held on , 29, 2014 at Cook-Walden Davis in Georgetown, Texas from 6:00P.M. to 8:00P.M. services will be at First United Methodist Church in Round Rock, Texas on , 30, 2014 at 1:00P.M.
