Obituary: Ted Simon, my father and the kindest, noblest man anyone could meet, passed away peacefully at home on 26, 2014 at age 98. Ted was born in Santa Clara, Cuba on 7, 1916. His birthday was always celebrated on 6, Three Kings Days, a tradition his mother started as she always said that he was a gift from Heaven\ and how right she was!!! Ted graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in Architecture and had his own practice in Santa Clara until Castro came to power. In 1962, after applying at the American Consulate, our family received US immigrant visas and arrived in Miami with $90 as our sole source of funds. My father was unable to find a job in Miami; 200,000+ Cubans had landed there in short order resulting in a dismal economy. My father applied for the so-called Cuban Refugee Fund which was essentially welfare for the arriving Cubans and at the largess of the government we started receiving $100 a month. In addition, my grandfather had started an insurance fund with a Canadian company for my future college education and my father cashed that in for a fraction of its value. For four long months during the summer of 62, my parents and I walked on the order of 30 blocks each way to a training center in northeast Miami, which offered English classes. We walked because we could not afford the 10 cents each way, each person for the bus ride. While in Miami the government gave us rations of a Velveeta-like cheese and a Spam-like pressed meat which we ate most every day. We lived in a furnished one-bedroom apartment and while the apartment had window air conditioners, we never turned them on as we could not afford the electricity. 6 months, with the insurance money running out, my father accepted a very welcomed relocation to Kansas City, courtesy of the Catholic Church. We will never forget arriving in KC in late 1962 \ a group from a local church met us at the airport and took us to an apartment which had been nicely furnished with hand-me-downs from church members \ a dinner had been fully cooked and was sitting on the stove awaiting our arrival\. Talk about a welcome!!! Life got much easier in Kansas City. Within a few weeks my father found a job with an architectural firm designing and building churches and parochial schools for the Catholic diocese. He worked there until 1974 when he relocated to Houston and continued his trade. My father was a man of great integrity and dedication. In the late 1960s on a certain afternoon the principals at Shaughnessy and Grimaldi had left the office to visit a client and shortly thereafter the remaining employees started departing early. At about 4:30 pm Mr. Shaughnessy called the office and my father answered the phone as he was the only one still there. Mr. Shaughnessy asked for his assistant and my father had to tell him that she had left, he then asked for a series of persons and my father had to tell him that they also had left. He then asked who was still there and my father said just himself. The following my father got a raise and he and Mr. Shaughnessy remained close friends until the end of his life. My father was predeceased by his parents, Manuel and Avelina, and his sisters, Genuina and Aleida. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Maria Teresa, and his son and daughter-in-law, Carlos and Trish, all of Houston, TX. He will be deeply missed. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the large number of persons who helped Ted during his final years, in particular Ramon Merino who unselfishly devoted much of his time to him. A Mass to celebrate Teds life will be offered at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX on 30, 2014 at 10:00 am. A reception will follow in the Family . |

Simon, age 79, loving wife to Phillip Simon, mother to Jonathon Simon and wife, n; David Simon; and Alan Simon and wife Dale; and grandmother to Gavrielle, Rachelle, Vaughn and Benjamin; passed away on , 22, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morton and Rae Leof. Rita is also survived by her cousins, Lorraine Debnekoff and Basil Debnekoff; best lifetime friend, Julie Kruger; wonderful caregivers, Mary Johnson and Dr. Roberta Jones. Rita was born on 3rd, 1931 in Chicago and spent her early life in California and Illinois. She met Phill, her husband of 53 years in Washington D.C., and they soon settled in San Antonio. Rita loved learning languages and majored in French. She was a natural for picking up foreign tongues and could hold a conversation in Spanish, Russian, Yiddish, German, and even a little Japanese and Mandarin. She loved music and studied piano as a child and adult, and with her husband, became accomplished square dancers. Ritas true passion was traveling throughout the U.S., her favorite spot being Green Mt. Falls in Colorado, and her most recent trip to Puget Sound and onto Alaska. As a stay at home mother, Rita was celebrated for her special recipes, still making time to volunteer for many years assisting at the Bexar hospital, Red Cross, and the Salvation Army, and for 25 years was an avid supporter of the fine art students and programs for the UT Shakespeare Theatre at Winedale and Roundtop Music Conservatory. Rita was a very generous and giving person; she will be loved and greatly missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
