Obituary: Lieutenant Colonel Elbert Rice Shoemate, 87, passed into the wild blue yonder on , 20, 2016, after a long battle with Alzheimers. Born in 1928 to Marion and Vera Shoemate of New London, Texas, Elbert was a bright young boy. His goal throughout childhood was to find a way to go to college. Elbert described his father as intelligent but uneducated, and Elbert knew that a good education would open doors to him that had been closed to Marion. Elbert married the love of his life, Edna Istook, on 6, 1949, just a few hours after she earned her own Bachelors degree. lived in Station, where Elbert attended Texas A&M, until he took a job with Dow Chemical in 1950 and the family moved to Freeport. In of 1951, Elbert was called into service from the Air Force Reserves with the rank of First Lieutenant. He remained with the Air Force until retiring in 1971 as a Lieutenant Colonel and Bronze Star recipient. Elbert enjoyed fishing, traveling, and spending time outdoors. Over the course of his lifetime, he forgot more about chemistry and science than most people ever learn. He was an active member of the Elks and the VFW, and a devoted family man. Elbert, known to his friends as Al, is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Edna Istook Shoemate; his sister, Doris Morgan; and four children: his daughter, Kathy (Charles) Seidler; his sons, Roger (Barbara) Shoemate, Stephen Shoemate, and Charles (Yan) Shoemate. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Michael Henley, William (Melissa) Henley, James Shoemate, Christina (Garrett) Buchanan, Dorothy (Corey) Crawford, Anna Prochazka, Sarah (Jason) Butler, and Allen Shoemate, and nine great-grandchildren: Zoe, Desiree, Phoenix, Jadyn, Brenna, Ezekiel, Hayden, Davrick, and Benjamin. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Vera Shoemate, his sister, Sammie Lee Shoemate; and his youngest son, Elbert Patrick Shoemate. Visitation will be held at Restwood 24, 2016 from at 6pm-8pm. Services will be held at Restwood 25, 2016 at 9am. |

Obituary: Theresa Shoemaker, aged 78, died peacefully on 8, 2016 surrounded by her children after a brief struggle with leukemia. Theresa was born in the beautiful village of Bollenborn, Germany in the Rhineland-Pflaz, the daughter of Henrich and Katharina Ackermann. Starting at a young age as an exchange student in London, England, Theresa was determined to travel and see the world. In 1961, Theresa married Eugene Shoemaker and became a career military wife. The US Army took them many places over the years as they raised their three children, including Hawaii, where Theresa became a US citizen in 1967. their retirement, the couple continued to enjoy traveling throughout the United States and the world. In addition to being an Army wife and raising a family, Theresa worked for the Killeen Independent School District for 22 years after the family relocated to Fort Hood, Texas. Theresa called Texas home for the last 39 years, first at Fort Hood, then Killeen, and finally in Austin, where she had resided for the last six years. Theresa was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Eugene Shoemaker. She is survived by sisters, Hildegard Sarter and Hedwig Kessler, both of Bad Bergzabern, Germany; daughter Rosemarie Connell (and husband Michael) of Arlington, MA; son Michael Shoemaker (and wife Karla Shoemaker) of Maumelle, AR; and son David (and wife Judy Shoemaker) of Austin, TX. She was the devoted and beloved grandmother to Emily, Jonathan, and Jessica Shoemaker and to Cameron Connell. She leaves behind her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Shoemaker of Newark, DE and her brother-in-law, Ronald Hummer of Mertztown, PA, all of whom she was so fond of. Theresa had seven nieces and six nephews. Theresa also leaves behind many cherished friends who loved her company, her cooking, and her great wit. She will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and friend. A Rosary at St.Theresa's Catholic Church in Austin will be held on , 13th at 6:30pm. The family will receive visitors on , 14th from 5-7pm at Crawford-Bowers in Killeen. Services will be on , 15th at 10:30am at St. Paul Chong Hasang Catholic Church in Harker Heights, a parish where Theresa and Eugene expressed and renewed their strong shared faith in God for many years. Obituary: Ruth Naomi Shoemaker joined her heavenly father 5, 2013 at the age of 100. Her date of birth was 15, 1912. She led a very full life including her childhood in Duxberry, MA where as a child she loved to work in the cranberry bogs with her father. As a student she was an avid learner, graduating from high school at the age of 16, Ruth left home by herself taking the boat, then train to Florida, Stetson University and graduated in 1932 with a B.S. in Mathematics. She left Florida and arrived in California to attend a bible school for a year. She went back to Stetson for a master degree in math. At Stetson she met her to be husband Charles Hilton Shoemaker and they married in 1935. Ruth had many interests including teaching school classes until the age of 96. She also lived in many different areas such as Baltimore, Maryland: Buffalo, New York; Dallas Texas; Lubbock, Texas Jacksonville, Florida; Orlando, Florida; and Mountainburg, Arkansas; Ruth lived in Lubbock from 1946 until 1961. She became involved in Girl Scouts as a leader of the troop her youngest daughter was in; later she became president of the Girl Scout council. She was also in two garden clubs for many years. She reached to the level of judge for flower shows. Ruth and her husband moved to Florida in 1961 where she taught high school math for 16 years. Her husband had a Bonanza aircraft that he was flying and Ruth signed up for lessons (encouraged by her husband.) Ruth was 51 when she learned to fly, typical of her approach to learning She went on to get her instrument rating and started teaching ground school at Kisseminee Airport. She continued flying until 1979 at the age of 67, when she moved to Arkansas. She loved her home in Arkansas on top of Cartwright Mountain. She enjoyed her past friends staying there and visiting. She continued making new friends and attending valley Tabernacle Church in Winfrey Arkansas. Christmas letters Ruth sent out every year to friends all over the USA! In 1976 when she lost her husband she started a new interest- camping in New Mexico with her older daughter and family. It wasn but a few years before she was ackpacking in the Pecos Wilderness. Her backpacking continued with an extended family group (usually 10 people) until she was 78 and had to have hip surgery, she educated the group on flowers, birds, plants while walking around 20 to 25 miles in 7 days. Ruth moved back to Lubbock in 2008 after ending up in the ER in Arkansas. Her son Charles and wife drove her to Lubbock so that Beverly could nurse her back to health. A special thanks to Jeff Morgan and Bruce for checking on her and calling 911 and letting family know. She was up and about walking with her walker in 2-3 weeks. She loved outside and walking and meeting more neighbors who couldn believe her age. She was happy until health failed her in 2012. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Ernest Wallace Osgood and Wife Marion Willouby-Brokenbough-Lemosy-Osgood, and her siblings; half brother frank Lemosy, brother Boyer Osgood, Sister Martha Osgood-Rodgers. Ruth is survived by her children Charles Ellis Shoemaker of Montna and Beverly Cole both of Lubbock, Robert Shoemaker of Houston, Texas, Laverne Wiginton of Springbranch, Texas. 6 grandchildren Stephen Charles Cole, William D. Cole, Kathryn Marie Cole, Lee Favreau Guerin, Micah Shoemaker, Rebecca Shoemaker, and Great-Grandchildren are Kenneth Cole, Ryan Cole, and Nikolas Cole, Martin Cole, Shay Guerin, Julianne Guerin and Alex Guerin. Services are at Resthavens Abbey Chapel on 10, 2013 at 1pm, Visitation will be from 12-1 prior to the service. Ruth will be laid to rest in Daytona, Florida Cedar Hill .
