Obituary: Ihen Sam Shen was a lover of the outdoors (he hiked in many of the national parks and some of the Appalachian Trail); a high school track athlete and, later in life, a marathon runner. He was a Tai Chi instructor and a Kendo practitioner. Occupationally, he retired as a Special Education teacher in 2005 and went straight into practicing Acupuncture & Chinese Herbology for over ten years. Born in Chongqing, China, and raised in Taiwan, Ihen moved to the United States and spent time in many of the nation’s states before settling down in Houston in 1978. He is survived by his daughters Celia and Heidi, son-in-law and granddaughter Michael and Hannah Wang, and many beloved siblings, nieces, and nephews. We recently found a note written to our dad in 2007. It expresses everything we all feel. From a patient: Dr. Shen, When I contemplate my blessings, your friendship is among one of the most brilliant treasures in my pouch. Obituary: Gladys Hung (Chou) Shen was born in Nanking, China, in 1947, to parents Chu Yin and Shu-Sheng Chou. In 1970, she graduated from Tunghai University in Taiwan and, shortly after, she moved to the United States. Gladys met her husband, Ihen “Sam” Shen, at Northeast Missouri State University and they married in Quincy, IL, in 1973. The couple lived many places, including Long Beach, CA, before settling in Houston. Gladys spent most of her professional life in geophysics, working predominantly at TGS-Nopec, Schlumberger, and Geco-Prakla, where she met many of her lifelong friends. Gladys loved travel and nature (and seeing nature when she traveled), and enjoyed watching independent films and re-runs of “Frasier.” For a while, she dedicated her time to leading the children’s Continuing Christian Education program at Ascension Chinese Mission, where she was a long-time member of the church. Preceded in death by her younger brother, Jau-Yi “Charlie” Chou, and her father Shu-Sheng, Gladys is survived by a myriad of loving family, including her mother, husband, daughters Celia and Heidi, son-in-law Michael Wang, granddaughter Hannah, sister-in-law Mai-Jern Chou, nephews Tom and David, and niece Stephanie. Obituary: Anne Ying Feng Shen (???), known to family as ??, peacefully passed away on 30, 2014 in Houston, Texas. She was 63 years old. Born in Taipei, Taiwan on 11, 1951 to Mr. Chien Nien Lu and Ms. Wen Chen, she was the fourth of nine children. She attended Christs in New Taipei City, Taiwan, where she graduated with a bachelors degree in English. She would meet her future husband, Joseph, at a college mixer event. married in 1976 in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to the United States shortly thereafter. lived in Los Angeles and Monterey, California before settling in Houston, where they raised their family. Anne had a wonderful, tireless and patient way of teaching, nurturing and caring for children. Some would say unique but everyone knew it was loving and it made them feel special. Quick with a smile, she instilled in the children she taught, nurtured and cared for the importance of education, but also to make friends and have fun. She was always the most supportive and patient person, never complaining as she devoted many years to two kids who participated in every extracurricular activity imaginable, often at her encouragement. For instance, despite not having any formal piano teaching experience, she taught her then 5-year old (and very fidgety) son the basics of piano, using a toy instrument piano while waiting for a real piano to be delivered. While a stickler for cleanliness, after these piano lessons she would let her son ride his bike in the kitchen and dining room area at a time when he was so very close to losing the training wheels. She would patiently encourage him, even though shed wince as he was crashing into the walls and leaving tire marks. She also taught her daughter the importance of strength and selflessness by example. She would sit nightly and help her daughter study for tests in high school just by listening to her recite everything from the process of photosynthesis to poems by Lord Byron, always offering helpful hints to help her remember. Her way with children would also make a difference and be remembered by her childrens friends, as well as the children of her relatives and friends. Her commitment to her students in the grade-school level classes at Houstons Evergreen Chinese School was remembered many years later after they had grown up, as they fondly recalled ??? and learning Chinese on s. In the later years, as Anne battled the symptoms of Alzheimers disease - with the love, courage, patience and selfless attention of her husband, children and others - she was still quick to smile, laugh and play with children. In times of struggle and loss, certain things endure and would never change. Anne is survived by her husband of 38 years, Joseph Yu Hao Shen; her children Christopher (Amy) Shen, of Hong Kong and Janice (Michael) Shih, of Houston; and granddaughter Charlotte Julianne Shih. She also leaves behind seven sisters, one brother and numerous relatives and friends who love and will miss her. |
