Obituary: Melvin Robert Schwartz passed away on , 24, 2015, just two weeks shy of his 101st birthday. He was surrounded by his family and friends through his entire life, and his peaceful journey into eternity was the same. Melvin was born to the late Fannie and David Schwartz in Chicago, Illinois on 7, 1914. receiving his degree in Commerce from Northwestern University, Mel served as a Captian in the United States Army Air Corp. On 22, 1941, he married the love of his life, Hortense Yoffie Schwartz, whom he had met during his first year of college at the University of Illinois. At the urging of long-time friends, they decided to move to Houston, and quickly adopted the city as their home to start their family. As a longtime resident of Meyerland, Mel has been a lifetime member of Congregation Beth Israel. Mel has served as President of the Brotherhood organization and as a Congregational Board member. In 1984, Mel retired as CFO from Jim West Realty. Mels life was filled with plenty to indulge in. and there was always room for dessert! He enjoyed Houston Astros baseball, and when not attending games in-person, would listen to them on the radio in his home. Mel and Hortense always enjoyed their season tickets to the theatre and loved the Broadway shows that they attended both in Houston and whenever passing through New York City. Mel loved to fish, and had purchased a boat with several friends to be able to frequent Galveston Bay to catch flounder and snapper, and go crabbing. He loved day trips to Galveston, and was known to return with a large cooler full of fresh shrimp for family and neighbors to share. There were even day trips to Tyler, TX, where he and Hortense would purchase rose bushes for their gardens. Mel had developed many deep friendships over the decades, and really considered his friends to be extended family. Between four nights of poker playing each week, supper club events, celebrating holidays, and traveling together, Mel had a deep appreciation for his friends. Mel and Hortense loved their friends dearly and always enjoyed spending quality time with them. Having been an only child, himself, Melvin cherished his family and always took the opportunity to celebrate with them for all of lifes events; birthdays, graduations, weddings and holidays. He was incredibly proud of his children, Leslie and Barbara, for their strong work ethic and for adding even more joy to his life with the addition of grandchildren, and eventually great grandchildren. In 1984, Mel retired as CFO from Jim West Realty. Throughout their retirement years, Mel and Hortense traveled the globe, from Asia to Australia, Africa, throughout Europe, Canada, all over the United States, and enjoyed many cruises. Mel and Hortense were fortunate to share 67 years of life and good health together, prior to her passing in 2007.
