Obituary: Margaret Schol was born to David and Milvina Snell, one of three children from the small northeastern Iowa, farming town of Monona. Margaret was the middle child of two brothers, Trescott the elder and Thomas younger. Margarets father was a pharmacist and her mother was a one-room schoolteacher. When Margaret was 5 years old, Dave Snell moved his family to the small town of Buffalo in the northwestern part of the state where he opened his own drug store. There, Margaret grew up. She attended Buffalo elementary and high school where she devoted her attention to the study of music. Her mother, Milvina, among other things, taught piano lessons. Had Margaret gone to college she would have studied music. When she graduated from high school, her father offered to sent her to college to pursue music. However, before she made a commitment to go to college she met a very handsome farm boy from Rock Rapids. Henry Schol came from a very large family in north central Iowa. He was a horse-racing jockey and wanted to become something other than a farmer. He went to work for Dave Snell where he met Margaret. The two of them fell in love and Margaret abandoned her ambitions for music and married Henry. In lieu of paying for Margarets college, Dave Snell offered to build the couple a house in Buffalo where they chose to reside. Within a year Margaret gave birth to their first child, Don Raymond. During this time World War II was raging in Europe. In 1941 the United States entered the war and every young man wanted to enlist, and go off to fight the Germans and/or the Japanese. Henry, while serving in Europe under General Patton was captured by the Germans and taken prisoner. He suffered severe trauma during his interment. Eventually he was liberated by Allied troops and sent home to Iowa. Henry never fully recovered from the psychological and the physical effects of his experience. plagued him for the rest of his life. Those were the days before PTSD was fully understood, and Margaret felt ill equipped to cope with his needs. When Henry returned home to Buffalo , Dave Snell decided to move the whole family to warmer climate in the north Texas area where there were job opportunities for himself as a pharmacist and for Henry. Margaret and Henry tried to have more children but that was not meant to be. That was one of her greatest regrets. In 1966, her son Don was drafted and sent to Vietnam. This experience brought up great anxieties about his survival, colored by her memory of her husbands experiences in WWII. During this time Henry spent much time in and out of the VA Hospital in Dallas. In 1967 Henry died in the VA Hospital at the age of 60, leaving Margaret a war widow and single parent. Margaret worked as sales person for a department store until she retired and moved to Argyle, TX to live with her son and his wife, Pamela Burnley-Schol, in her own cottage attached to their house in Argyle. Margaret lived happily with Don and Pam for 26 years. She lived to within 6 weeks of her 100 year birthday. God rest her soul. Margaret Rose Schol is survived by her only son, Don R. Schol and his wife, Pamela Burnley-Schol; her grandson Mark E. Schol and his wife, Sue; her grandchildren, 1Lt. Laney M. Schol, and Tommy Schol. She is also survived by her niece, Rose Marie Snell, and cousin David Snell. |
