Obituary: Henk Schlette, beloved beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather, passed peacefully on 22, 2014. He was 83. Henk was born in Medan, Indonesia on 21, 1931, to Arend and Wilhelmina Schlette. When Henk was twelve, his parents' home was commandeered during WWII by Japanese Imperial forces, and he spent his youth in a labor camp alongside his brothers and father. Despite the ravages of war and the oppressive experiences of Japanese occupation, Henk developed an eternally optimistic spirit as a teenager, which served him well throughout his life. Henk graduated from high school in The Hauge, Netherlands in 1949 and attained an undergraduate degree in 1951 in Medan. Henk married his wife of 58 years, Mary, in 1956. Mary’s father died during WWII, she was raised in a Catholic convent. Henk courageously asked the priest for her hand in marriage and their journey of love began. In 1958, after the Indonesian War of Independence, Henk and Mary, as Dutch citizens, were expelled from Indonesia to Holland, where Henk began a career as a chemist. He worked by day and studied by night to obtain an advanced degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Scheveningen in 1959. Henk’s drive to pursue opportunity became reality when he immigrated to the United States via Ellis Island in 1959. He became a U.S. citizen in 1966, one of his proudest moments. Henk was one of the first employees of Frito-Lay and had a 32-year career as a food chemist directing the National Quality Control laboratory. He retired in 1987 to pursue his passions, which included fishing, soccer, tennis, and his grandchildren, to whom he was a loving Opa. Henk was honest, kind, patient, frugal, a proud American, and Mr. Reliable--a wonderful dad, a loving husband, and a consummate provider. There was never a stranger in his house or in his heart. Henk is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert and Bram Schlette; and his infant grandson, John Truett Whitley, III. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his sister Zonneke Cross and her husband, Jack; his son Ritchie Schlette and his fiancée Julie Crouch; his daughter Cindy Schlette Whitley and her husband John; his grandchildren, Alyssa Nicole Schlette, Cal Joseph Whitley, Truett Michael Whitley, and Emma Mady Whitley; and many extended family members. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. There will be a Mass honoring his life at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Plano on , 29, at 11 a.m. A vigil Rosary will be held on , 28, at 7 p.m., also at Prince of Peace. |
