Obituary: Ralph Scheel was born in Franklin , Iowa, in 1918. He grew up on a farm doing all the things that agriculture and animal husbandry demands. It was in high school that his love of music began. He played the baritone horn and even found time to join in a local German oom-pah quartet. were really good and won a statewide music contest and were featured on national radio.

Ralph had left the farm and was working in Sheffield, Iowa when World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was stationed at Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls, Texas for training. While stationed there he met his beloved Betty Smith through a local church program; take-a-soldier-home-for- -dinner. fell in love and were married in of 1942.

the war, Ralph and Betty moved to Houston where Ralph worked full time and still managed to graduate from the University of Houston School of Technology. A son, Bill, was born in 1950 so working, school, and supporting a family was quite a feat. graduation, Ralph began a career with the National Biscuit , or Nabisco as it is more popularly known, and retired in 1983 after twenty-eight years of service. He was a member of I.B.E.W. local 716.

If you ask Ralph what his hobbies are he would say family and church. He helped build, both physically and spiritually, Oaks Christian Church in Houston and served on several boards and committees. He is now a member of First Methodist along with his son Bill, daughter-in-law Jill, and grandson Alex. If you want to see his eyes light up, just mention his grandson Alex, who is a senior at Baylor University. He also was a great supporter of his sons activities in band and DeMolay. He was awarded the DeMolay Honorary Legion of Honor, their highest award, for his efforts. He also enjoyed his membership in the masonic lodge.

Betty died in 1990, he returned to his music. He had learned to play the harmonica as a boy and then taught himself to play the banjo and ukulele. At one point he belonged to a ukulele band, a banjo band and a senior adult choir. Because of his proficiency on the harmonica, he became a featured soloist with those groups. These bands and choirs preformed at senior adult facilities throughout Houston including The Forum where he lived. Arthritis had curtailed his ability to play the string instruments but from time to time you could get him to play a tune on his harmonica. If there was a musical event at The Forum, you can be sure that Ralph was in the front row. In lieu of flowers the family request that gifts in Ralphs memory be made to First United Methodist Church, 1320 Main St. Houston, Texas 77002.
